CBS has finally confirmed that How I Met Your Mother will continue for another year – and that season 9 will be the sitcom’s last.

A few months back we reported that How I Met Your Mother had been renewed for a ninth season despite some problems with Jason Segel (Marshall)’s contract. But only today has CBS released an official press release confirming their decision.

In the statement, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler confirms what several of the stars have already stated publicly: that season 9 will indeed be the show’s final season.

She says, “Through eight years, How I Met Your Mother has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catch-phrases. We are excited for Carter, Craig, Pam Fryman and this amazing cast to tell the final chapter and reveal television’s most mysterious mother to some of TV’s most passionate fans.”

So when will we finally meet the mother of Ted’s children? There is still no firm word, but 20th Century Fox has issued a statement which affirms the company’s belief that showrunners Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will, “guide one of the greatest comedies of the last decade to a gratifying conclusion when they finally reveal the identity of the mother.”

Further, EW has also revealed several tidbits about the second half of season 8, including that this Monday’s Robin Sparkles chapter might not be the last time we’ll see her after all! We are also assured that the wedding between Barney and Robin will indeed take place this year, and that Ted still isn’t completely over Robin at this point. Oh, Ted. Meet the mother already, okay?

And speaking of this elusive female person/wedding band member/future mother of Luke and Leia (we really hope these are actually gonna be the kids’ names), when do you think we’ll meet her? At the end of the current eighth season, at the beginning of season 9, or perhaps at the very end of the series? Share your thoughts in the comments!

I REALLY hope it’s at the end of this season. I want some time to get to know her after eight series of waiting.

If they did that they’d have to rename season 9. I imagine the mother will be an already established character, with Ted in the final scene seeing her in a new light, and thus “meeting” her.

We know she was the roommate of his girlfriend who later realized she was gay. And he knows things about her like she plays in a band, so I don’t think he knows her, unless it was a brief encounter.

We also know he lies. We know that some stuff goes on that he covers up for his kids, like all the smoking and the occasional drug use. we also aren’t told everything about the people Ted currently knows so a lot of them could fit into the things we already know about The Mother without us realizing.

I’m not saying I’m right, but I’m pretty sure when it comes down to meeting the Mother it’ll be in one of the final scenes, but because of the pre established storyline we won’t need to get to know her because we already pretty much do.

I’ll bet anything that this season will end with Future Ted narrating something along the lines of, “and there she was kids: you mother.” And we see Ted turning to look at the mother, but the credits roll before we actually see her.

      Ugh I bet you’re right.

I do love this show but I am ready for it to end. I just hope season 9 can be just as great as the first 4 seasons.

I would want to see a little more of the mother but then again, I feel like it’ll be weird if we meet the mother end of this season or beginning of next and then the story still continues. Weird because I feel like meeting the mother should be the conclusion of everything, this whole series. And maybe they can really end off with a final scene by having a flash forward to see everyone’s future life (maybe while Ted is narrating something conclusive)..I’m quite comfortable with that since they do flashing back and forwards all the time and it should work well.

I would like to seem Ted dating her, realizing she’s the one, and getting married

I still want an explanation of how a guy in his 30s grows up to be Bob Saget. I honestly hope they do something with that.
