Every fandom has their own batch of quotes that are quintessential to their following, whether it’s making people laugh or cry. They can often be seen plastered onto home made t-shirts or GIF’d a hundred different ways on Tumblr. Just quoting that one line casually into a conversation is a great way of finding out if there are any other fellow fans amongst you.

Below is a short list of some of the most well known quotes from a variety of different fandoms.

“Winter is Coming.” – ‘Game of Thrones’

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m kind of crazy about Game of Thrones (or A Song of Ice and Fire for the book purists), and although this is something anyone could say in a regular conversation, I immediately think of Ed Stark whenever I hear it. Even in the latest Doctor Who episode when Ian McKellen says it, I couldn’t help but be jarred out of the show for a minute, wondering whether the writers did that intentionally or if they could somehow not know that it was a famous quote from another successful TV show.

If a quote can take you out of staring at the strange attractiveness of Matt Smith’s face, then you know it is a line that is well worth remembering.

“Luke, I Am Your Father.” – ‘Star Wars’

This quote is not only one of the biggest movie quotes of all time, it is also probably one of the most misquoted. In reality, the actual line is, “No, I am your father”, and then cuts to Luke screaming, “NOOOOOOOOOO!” (Which really needs to be used way more as a reaction GIF on Tumblr.)
However, it is understandable why it’s misquoted all the time. The original just doesn’t pack as much of a punch as the altered version. Not to discredit George Lucas, although most Star War fans do so on a daily basis, but the fans adaptation is better.

“You Shall Not Pass!” – ‘Lord of the Rings’

I knew this reference well before I ever saw the Lord of the Rings trilogy (which was an embarrassingly long time after they were released), a sure sign that this quote is used all the time by fans and non-fans alike. How many times have you or your friends shouted it back at each other while crossing a bridge or stressing out over a test? I’m pretty sure I even used it before I had even seen the movie. It’s a classic, like the Titanic scene. Everybody knows it and does it, whether they’ve seen the original or not.

“Not My Daughter, you Bitch!” – ‘Harry Potter’

This was probably one of the hardest ones to choose from over 7 books and 8 movies! It’s hard to whittle it down to just one. Of course there are a lot of great one-liners, from serious to funny, but this one is memorable simply because it was the first time J.K Rowling swore!
The fact that Molly swore was more shocking than her actually killing Bellatrix. JK’s so posh and British, it was basically like catching the Queen swearing.
It’s also super fun to quote because you can’t get into trouble for saying it; it’s in a “children’s” book!

“I Volunteer! I Volunteer as Tribute!” – ‘The Hunger Games’

Okay, so I’ll admit it. I chose this one based solely on the amount of times I’ve seen it on Tumblr, or have used it underneath any basically good-looking photos of celebrities. But that’s what makes the line so great! Any quote that you can use outside of its original context is guaranteed to be memorable. We live in a highly intertextual society now, and this line is a perfect fit to our referential needs, which earns it the title of the most iconic quote from The Hunger Games.

Obviously, there are many more quotes from so many other great fandoms, and some honourable mentions have to be included: Starkid – “Totally awesome!” and Once Upon a Time – “I will always find you!”

But if there are anymore, which there surely are, leave your favourites in the comments below.

    HA! This is so accurate.

Awesome article! I think I would pick “always” from Harry Potter, but it’s hard to pick just one.

I like what they picked but “Always” made such an impact on me I got it tattooed on my wrist. So it’d be my pick too :)

          “Vampire.”
I really should have just included Twilight for the hilarity of its quotes.

          • KleppMelk

            Yes. Yes, you should have.

“And so the lion fell in love with the lamb.”

And we still don’t know. It will probably be another 3 years before we do. Argh!

  • Amy F

i can’t help but say that i am once more insulted by somebody calling harry potter (7) a children’s book. why? because it’s misleading/wrong information.

    • Lindsey

It is a children’s book though. JKR said so, that’s how it was marketed, it’s usually in that section of the bookshop. It’s definitely not YA. Children’s books that can be enjoyed by everyone.

    • http://twitter.com/atalyce Alyce

I definitely don’t think it’s a children’s book! That’s why i put the “” around the word children. I was more poking fun at that idea, because obviously children’s books don’t normally have swearing in it!

      • http://twitter.com/Tygridia Tygridia

And normally children books are not the everybody-dies-in-the-eng kind of books….

      • Amy F

i thank you for that xD

  • Sweetlilaud

Just have to say that I LOVE that you picked that Molly Weasley line for the HP fandom. I would be too tempted to resist choosing that line too. It’s just too good! Hands down one of my favorite lines in the whole series! :D

    • http://twitter.com/atalyce Alyce

Thanks! I think i chose it in addition to it being awesome because i heard it so many times on Mugglecast during the live shows after the release of the book!

“One does not simply walk into Mordor”

  • http://www.facebook.com/alec.bojalad Alec Bojalad

Harry Potter is a tough choice. There are plenty of truly excellent quotes to choose but if you interpret the word “iconic” to mean “the first quote that comes to mind” or “the most likely a non-fan is to know it,” then I think the answer is “You’re a wizard, Harry.”

    • http://twitter.com/atalyce Alyce

Ah, very true! I’m seeing some really great ones posted by others, especially related to Harry Potter, that would have worked just as well. I suppose my mind was just overwhelmed by choices and i chose one of the more recent ones.

    • Daughter of Eve

Harry Potter movies have some unfortunately funny (IMO) quotes like in HP&DH pt2:

Voldemort (to Lucius): How can you live with yourself?

Lucius: I don’t know, my lord.

  • xoxoKellyLee

“Oh, there you are. I’ve been looking for you forever.” — Blaine to Kurt, Glee

    • RumbleroarLuna

That’s what I was thinking. That, or “I’m never saying goodbye to you”

      • xoxoKellyLee

        I love that one!

  • http://twitter.com/Killward Your Goddess

One quote from The Iron King: “Careful, human. Do not lose your heart to a faery prince. It never ends well “

  • Vajackster

“Fly, you fools” was more memorable.

  • http://twitter.com/KevinPavon Kevin Pavon

“Winter is coming” was (probably) added as a specific reference to Game of Thrones because Jenna Louise Coleman (Oswin Oswald) is dating Richard Madden (Robb Stark).

    • http://www.facebook.com/hcadams9 Hayley Adams

Wait, say what!? Now that is a fandom cross over that I need to see! I still can’t believe they would use that line though, it’s just too quentisential for Game of Thrones, I found it so awkward in Doctor Who!

      • http://twitter.com/KevinPavon Kevin Pavon

I agree, but hey, it’s the Christmas Special. Apparently they also used the Sherlock theme music at one point, so it was just a cornucopia of crossovers.

        • http://twitter.com/atalyce Alyce

Well Matt Smith Sherlock’s impression was exactly like Benedict Cumberbatch’s, which was hilarious, and happened because Stefan Moffat is the showrunner for both.

        • http://www.facebook.com/hcadams9 Hayley Adams

well they definitely used the character of Sherlock Holmes, but I didn’t pick up on the music as well! That’s pretty cool

    • PotionWillow207

She can have Robb Stark as long as I can have Jon Snow. I’ll take the bastard any day! LOL.

  • Phantomfluteplayer

I like “Always” because it is not only meaningful in the Potter fandom, but also in the Castle fandom, of which I am also a part.

  • Jacob

Some of my favorite movie quotes

“Its mine, my precious”- Lord of the Rings

“Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I’m an agent of chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about chaos? It’s fair!” – The Dark Knight – “Do you want know how I got these scars”

This is a 44. magnum the largest hand gun in the world which would probably blow your head clean off, So you have to ask yourself one question, do I feel luck, well do ya punk”.- Dirty Harry

“You Cant handle the truth”- A Few Good Men

“Are you talkin’ to me”- Taxi Driver

  • Rachael

I’d have to say that “always” is used much more often in the Harry Potter fandom, as much as I love Mrs. Weasley cursing. hehe

And I think “You shall not pass” is going to have to fight with “One does not simply walk into Mordor,” the meme to end all memes.

  • HPfan

“Luke, I am your father… you don’t write, you don’t call, NOTHING!”

  • Diana

“With great power comes great responsibility” – Spiderman

    • PotionWillow207

That is actually a misquote of what what originally said by Voltaire. It was made more popular by Uncle Ben in Spiderman, but it was iconic long before then.

  • Samuel

Kate, we have to go back.

  • Kit

“Do you love me Real or not Real?”
    “Real”

I think that is the best Hunger Games quote.

    • PotionWillow207

It’s, “You love me.” Not, “Do you love me.” I don’t mean to be rude. It just bugs me. Like the Star Wars quote. LOL!

      • Kit

        oops sorry

    • http://twitter.com/atalyce Alyce

Ugh, such a good one. This is definitely the best, i just chose the other one because of how it has been re-imagined by fans.

I would put “May the odds be ever in your favor!” as the most iconic Hunger Games quote.

    • Rosebrook

I would too. Every time I hear the word “odds,” no matter what the context, I automatically think of this quote. Even my dad knows it!

  • Burford11

Another quote from Game of Thrones which I love:

I was thinking Always for Harry Potter.

I have no idea what glee’s would be. (I mean, I could think of some for Klaine specifically.) Maybe just Don’t Stop Believin’? But then it hardly counts, considering it’s not original… So I don’t know.
