J.K. Rowling and the BBC surprised the world earlier this month when the pair announced that The Casual Vacancy would be adapted for television.

Via Rowling’s agent, we’re learning today that casting will begin in the spring.

The little tidbit arrived in a tweet written by Neil Blair while he was replying to one of his followers:

When news of the television show was announced, Rowling seemed thrilled. “I always felt that, if it were to be adapted, this novel was best suited to television,” Rowling said. “I think the BBC is the perfect home.”

She had said while promoting the book earlier in the year that the book was not very “filmable.” “That is one of the things I like about it. I think it’s a very novelly novel in that a lot of what goes on happens internally. You need to understand what’s going on inside people’s heads. So even though a lot happens in the novel, part of the appeal of it for me is that so much of it happens in people’s interior life, and film isn’t necessarily the best medium to portray that.”

We’ll continue to keep an eye on the Casual Vacancy television show developments as they arrive. It will air as a miniseries in 2014.

Who do you want to see cast in the Casual Vacancy TV show?

Thanks, Pottermore News.

  • Gary65

I would love to see some Merlin actors in the show. Not really sure who would play who though.

    • http://twitter.com/_xony soniadelvalle

Colin could play Fats or Andrew Price.

  • Harry Potter

Sean Bean in any role !

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robert-Monkman/502331043 Robert Monkman

Barry Fairbrother, Sean dies in everything!

      • BritishHobo

He’d actually be pretty good for that role. Fairbrother is kind of Ned Stark-ish in being the one noble good guy in a sea of arseholes.

    • voodooqueen

Isn’t it set in the West Country though? Sean Bean would have to lose his Northern Accent and learn a West Country accent.

      • Lindsey

Because actors never learn different accents right? smh

    • SonickedYou

Jennifer Lawrence in *any* role too. Haha.

  • http://twitter.com/emilyecstasyTM Emily Bryan

    Ooooh! I can’t wait! :]

  • http://twitter.com/Snapescape Laura Cain

    Stephen Fry!!

    • http://twitter.com/_xony soniadelvalle

      AS COLLIN WALL IKR?!

      • BritishHobo

Ben Elton’d be a decent Colin Wall.

  • Denis

Well to be honest, I don’t think it was a surprise to anyone that it was going to be made into a tv series…. It could never be a film as too much happens and the way it is written with all the different intertwined plots is just the kind of thing you would see on a BBC series!

  • Peg

I’d like to see them use fresh faces for the series. Give some new actors and actresses a shot. I’m assuming this will be an all British cast again, won’t it? (Except, perhaps, for the American boy band members that are mentioned from time to time.)

    • a6five

When the Potter films were in production, one unemployed British actor lamented “I must be the only actor in GB not to be in those films”, so I’m betting there will be some familiar faces here and there.

Anthony Head as Cubby? Just me then…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rachel-Whelen/514317641 Rachel Whelen

I think Anthony Head should be in everything, but he is just too attractive to be Cubby IMO

      • http://twitter.com/STARKIDwheeler Houston S. Pearce

But usually they play up the attractiveness of the actors when their adapted.

  • http://twitter.com/MusicandHouse J

I just hope this airs in the US so we can see it here too!

  • VideoKilledSeverusSnape

I hope no one from the Harry Potter films play in this. It would feel extremely odd… for me.

    • http://twitter.com/STARKIDwheeler Houston S. Pearce

Atleast his name isn’t Harry Fairbrother, lol

    • PotterFan1029

I agree, but it would still be awesome I think lol

    • Lana

Richard Griffiths has got to play Howard Mollinson though, surely. That’s who I was imagining while reading it, anyway!

      • soniadelvalle

YES! There is no one I can think of that would be better for the role! I even suspect that Rowling had “elder Vernon Dursley” in mind when she created Howard :P

      • Paulo

        Er… But he died ‘-’

    • soniadelvalle

What about Shirley Henderson as Mary Fairbrother? We know she can cry on cue… (ok, bad joke).

  • Brian

Ha! Definitely called it as I was reading the book. :D

  • Jack

I haven’t read the book but they should put benedict Cumberbatch in it.

    • soniadelvalle

      Oooohhhhhhh HE COULD BE GAVIN

  • Jason

    Eddy Redmayne for Fats? Anyone?

    • SonickedYou

      Holy crap yes!

    • http://twitter.com/mezz98 @mezz98

      Awesome idea!

  • voodooqueen

when I was listening to the talking book I imagined Anthony Head as Cubby…
Lauren Socha would make a great Krystal Weedon, Kate Dickie as Terri

  • http://twitter.com/HannahGann Hannah Gann

    Richard Griffiths for Howard Mollison!

    • http://twitter.com/_xony soniadelvalle

      YES PERFECT I IMAGINED HIM

    • BritishHobo

      That is properly perfect.

    • Abi

Yes, I read the entire book visualising him as Griffiths.

  • SonickedYou

Rise up, The Casual Vacancy fans. Mark your calendars.

  • http://twitter.com/Tran_Nagwaian Tran Nguyen

    Andrew, get practising!

  • PotterFan1029

Can the whole cast just be Harry Potter actors? Yes? Okay, great, thanks! lol

  • http://twitter.com/_xony soniadelvalle

Rupert Graves as Miles Mollison. That is all. AND Rhys Ifans as Gavin (him or David Tennant).

  • http://twitter.com/BeccaPhoenix16 Liam I exist

As long as Jo approves of the cast, we can’t really complain

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001323469179 Arialle Renee

Is BBC available in the US without delays?

    • Teranel

If it was, my life would be so much simpler…

  • http://twitter.com/Selestina118 Claudia

I’d like to see Sendhil Ramamurthy as Vikram, Camille Coduri as Samantha Mollison, … and Andrew Scott in some capacity because he is wonderful. =)

    • SiriusPotter92

Camille Coduri is EXACTLY who I picture as Samantha!

  • http://www.facebook.com/rebeccaleighhurst Rebecca Leigh Hurst

Tamsin Greig as Samantha Mollison, please!!

  • Heather

Just finished the book and I am looking forward to the TV show :-D I can see Emma Watson playing the part of Gaia, but it would be a little strange with the HP cast involved with this one.
