Julia’s scarves and bowling alley musical numbers are out for season 2 of Smash.
Apart from the many casting additions to the NBC musical drama, new showrunner Josh Safran, formerly helming Gossip Girl, is making changes for the show’s return. That includes putting a stop to “bowling alley sing-a-longs,” he told Entertainment Weekly. But never fear, that doesn’t mean he’s putting a stop to fantasy sequences all together. Just don’t expect more Bollywood-type scenes.
Debra Messing’s wardrobe, specifically her many scarves, will be among those changes and addressed “head on.” Does that mean Julia will decide to get a makeover?
Safran reassures fans that the changes he’s making won’t dramatically alter the essence of the show.
“As a viewer, I really loved the show,” he explained. “It’s literally just reaching in and moving the tiny pieces that weren’t connecting, the gears that weren’t fully aligned. But it’s small shifts. If you loved Smash last year, you are not seeing a radically different show. And that was important to me because I loved Smash last year.”
Those “small shifts” include guest roles for Jennifer Hudson, Liza Minnelli, Nikki Blonsky, Sean Hayes, Jesse L. Martin and Daphne Rubin-Vega, as well as three new regulars in Jeremy Jordan, Krysta Rodriguez and Andy Mientus. Four characters from season 1 – Michael Swift, Frank, Ellis and Dev – will have downgraded roles, if any.
Smash returns to NBC with a two-hour season premiere on Feb. 5. Are these the kinds of changes you were hoping for in season 2?
