Sad news in the Teen Wolf fandom today: Jeff Davis has officially left Twitter.

Davis had a strong presence on Twitter, especially recently. He often interacted with fans, dropping little details here and there much to the delight of the fandom as a whole. He also tweeted photos of the cast, including behind-the-scenes pictures and pre-production drawings. Not to mention he’s been kind to Hypable as well, tweeting out a few of our articles to his 50K+ followers.

Yesterday, however, saw him tweeting for a final time before deleting his account.

There’s no official word as to why he did it, though a logical jump would be that it’s because he’s been getting some negative feedback in response to some of his choices regarding the show. The most recent of which seems to be the casting of Felisha Terrell as Kali. The name for the character was taken as an homage to the Hindu goddess, a deity often associated with death and destruction. From what we’ve heard about the character in the show, she’s promising to live up to her name. The problem, however, seems to be in the casting of the actress, who is not of Indian decent.

This isn’t the first time that Davis has had to deal with upset fans who aren’t happy with some of the choices he’s made, one specifically being the lack of background information for Boyd. There was a big to-do earlier in the year regarding this. You can catch up by viewing the article on Gawker.

That previous interaction with the fanbase scared Davis away from Tumblr, which he would have used to give us some extra insider pictures. Instead he stuck with Twitter. Until recently, that is.

As previously stated, we don’t know for certain if this is why he deleted his account, though the official Teen Wolf Tumblr asked if everyone would please stay calm and play nicely. For the time being, you can find official updates there, on the Teen wolf Facebook page, and on the Teen Wolf Twitter.

But maybe if we’re all on our best behavior, he’ll come back. Fingers crossed, Wolf Pack.

Whaat. That’s so sad. But honestly, considering what asses people can be sometimes, it amazes me that celebrities are even on Twitter at all.

I’m sad :( I’ll miss his awesome tweets. I think he just deleted it because its a distraction. I hope it wasn’t because of rude people.
As for the people complaining about the casting of Kali, has no one considered the fact that maybe no one of Indian descent audition so they just chose the best person? People need to get over themselves.

    • http://jensenandjared4ever.piczo.com/?cr=2 Amanpreet

Im Indian and i wouldn’t care who portrays her as long as its done well

  • Gary65

I’m glad he deleted his account. I think NATWP discussed in an earlier episode but there is a large section of TW fans who are developing their own version of TW fanon and demanding that Jeff make it canon/have already deluded themselves into thinking it’s canon. I don’t know Jeff Davis but I do know that that kind of loud and abrasive behaviour can really mess with your thinking and disturb the creative process. JK Rowling has talked many times about how she avoided HP fansites like the plague when she was writing the books for fear that people’s vitriol would interfere with the story she wanted to tell. She even talked about how she hardly ever interacts with online fan communities after she joined one anonymously & some ass**** verbally abused her.

If it means that he can keep his thoughts straight and continue to develop this amazing show that we all love so much, then maybe it’s a good thing he left. I’ll miss him but there is a large cross-section of the Twitter-verse population that do not deserve access to Jeff Davis’ awesomeness.

    • http://twitter.com/BrookWentz Brook Wentz

I completely agree, especially with this: ‘I don’t know Jeff Davis but I do know that that kind of loud and abrasive behaviour can really mess with your thinking and disturb the creative process.’

Which is what worries and frustrates me the most. I wish people would remember that behind the showrunner title Jeff is just an ordinary individual trying to produce a show that he thinks people will want to watch and that he can be proud of. All the hate and yellimg is really unfortunate.

  • http://twitter.com/vonchambers Devon Chambers

Since a portion of the TW fanbase had been bothering Jeff on a daily basis both on Twitter and Tumblr about writing the show how they would like him to, or casting how they would like him to – I don’t blame him. I think Jeff is slowly or maybe quickly learning why so few show runners interact with fans while filming/writing the show – ESPECIALLY on Twitter.

Certain fans can’t handle that their ideas aren’t used, though I love the people blaming Sterek cookies on this whole mess – I think the constant comments about Jeff some how being racist is the straw that broke the camels back. I hope the cast and crew has fun and does their best work during Season 3 and I can’t wait until next summer when I get to watch it! I also hope Jeff doesn’t feel too bad and lets the negative comments online roll off his shoulders.

  • Ev42

I keep trying to put my thoughts about this in writing and it’s not working, so yeah… Basically, I think people are definitely being overly hostile about this. I’m sad that he’s gone for however long he stays away, but I totally get it. The crazy/rude/hostile fans are always the loudest, aren’t they?

  • Gary65

It really makes you question who the real racists are here: the people who write, irrespective of race, or the people who are so blinded by skin that they can’t enjoy anything that doesn’t address the issue as they see it. I hate to break it to you but there is no mandate stating you have to read Roots cover to cover in order to craft a good story.

    • http://twitter.com/SarahKHansen S.K.Hansen

Implying that those who take issue with the constant whitewashing and the institutionalized discrimination in the Entertainment industry are “racist” is ignorant and insulting. Please, in the future, do not throw around the racist label so flippantly. I am not very familiar with this particular case and how much Jeff is actually involved in the casting process, but if Jeff was being harassed for the casting choices, then that is not okay. It is mean and inappropriate to harass someone, but it doesn’t make the harassers “racists” as you implied.

As for your point about “writing irrespective to race”, theoretically that sounds good, but ignoring the fact that race and ethnicity are huge parts of a person’s identity will just create more problems. Casting a white actor, for a character that seems to be based on Indian mythology, looks like cultural appropriation. (If that is what is happening with this character, again I am not familiar with this case.) So I can understand why some fans are upset. Does this make the show runners racist? No. But, it is a symptom of an industry wide problem. What you need to consider is a lot of these decisions regarding casting, are not artistic decisions, or based on who is best for the role, but based on who will make the network/studio the most money. TV is after all a business, and whitewashing is a symptom of an industry that cynically assumes their shows/movies will appeal to the widest audiences by casting mainly white actors. So they fall into a cycle of casting white actors, doing well, and trying to duplicate that succes over and over and over again, assuming that the race of the actors is a factor in the success of a project. The fear of losing money, makes this an industry reluctant to change their formula, try something new or take risks. An attitude that becomes obvious with the sheer number of remakes, reboots and adaptations that the industry churns out every year. When they do change it is in painfully small steps. I won’t get too much into the issue here, but I would like point out that even the most well intentioned shows/movies can fall victim to this.

      • DarrlynM

        Well said!

      • Gary65

I’ll stop being flippant about the race label when they do. Anyone who actually watches the show knows the show is about as nondiscriminatory as it can get. The lead actor is latino, the show’s most popular ship is gay, the most popular guy in the school’s best friend is gay. The most popular guy in school even flirts with him from time to time, despite being straight. Both race & sexuality are non-issues. It’s certainly one of the few shows on TV that doesn’t force its gay characters through that overdone confused-about-his-sexuality storyline. He’s out, he’s comfortable and no one gives a crap about it. It’s about as progressive a show as you can get.

I would also point out that in the original Teen Wolf(which this is VERY loosely based on), the only black character in the whole cast was relegated to simply pushing the main character over a few times on the court and barely even spoke. Meanwhile, this show already has 6 non-white/mixed race characters who are, at the very least, recurring & have already cast more for the next season

And if you looked up a picture of Felisha Terrell, you would see that she has an Indian tone to her skin but she is black. She isn’t white. Whatsmore, Felisha Terrell isn’t that well known an actress so I don’t see how her being cast will bring the studio more money. She was clearly cast cos she was best for the role.

These idiots attacking Jeff are the ones raising the issue of race which IMO makes them a lot more suitable for the race label than him. They’re not complaining about the casting cos she’s white. They’re complaining cos she’s black.

        • http://twitter.com/SarahKHansen S.K.Hansen

“I’ll stop being flippant about the race label when they do.” This does does not make what you say right. It makes you seem childish.

“And if you looked up a picture of Felisha Terrell, you would see that she has an Indian tone to her skin but she is black. She isn’t white. Whatsmore, Felisha Terrell isn’t that well known an actress so I don’t see how her being cast will bring the studio more money. She was clearly cast cos she was best for the role.”

Again, I said in my original post I wasn’t familiar with this case. But, your assumption that because she looks indian makes it okay, is a bad stance to take. It lumps everyone with brown skin into the same category, and doesn’t take into account the nuances of race, ethnicity and culture.

“Anyone who actually watches the show knows the show is about as nondiscriminatory as it can get.” That doesn’t make a show, or people behind the show perfect. Even those with the best intentions can make mistakes.

As I said, I am not defending anyone who harasses Jeff. But, I find your attitude equally insulting, which is why I responded.

          • Gary65

Childish or not, I still think it’s racist to demand that a character be a certain race just cos of their name. The idea that you would reject someone who’s well suited for the role cos they’re the wrong race is just stupid.

I can’t really tell what race she is, which is why I mentioned the Indian tone to cover my bases. I assume she’s black because, if she were Indian, then these people wouldn’t be whining about it.

Seeing as he’s the guy who created and writes the show, it is reasonable to assume he has a role in the tone the show takes in regards to race & sexuality.

“Mistake”……that’s an interesting word to use. What mistake has been made here?

As far as I’m concerned, whining because a character you know nothing about is the wrong skin colour is a form of discrimination. You know nothing about the role, about how the actress intends to play the role, her abilities in this role or even what the purpose of the character is in the plot. IMO they are discriminating against the actress based on her skin colour, which is the definition of racism.

          • DarrlynM

            THIS^^^

    • DarrlynM

Yes, because pointing out racism is the same as being racist *eyeroll* Oh please

      • Gary65

Complaining cos the actress who was cast is black seems pretty racist to me.

        • DarrlynM

IMO I think it has less to do with her being Black and more to do with why they couldn’t just cast an Indian actress if she is named for a Hindu goddess. As a WOC I’m glad they at least have a person of color as the character but we’re not interchangeable just because we have brown skin. And this happens a lot in Hollywood, just saying

          • Gary65

So if you had a Indian actress who was allright and white actress who was amazing and would really do the part justice, you would go with the Indian one just cos she fits your preconceived notion of what the character should look like? Seems pretty racist to me. Someone should alert Jenna Ushkowitz and let her know that she needs to find a more Asian name. One’s name must always match one’s appearance.

          • DarrlynM

Lol, so whitewashing is ok?Just as long as the white actor/actress is amazing? LMAO. Bet you think blackface, yellowface and brownface is equally as ok. And my answer to that would be to find an amazing Indian actress because they’re out there, it not like looking for bigfoot, they exist. Oh, you tickle me, thanks for that. And you know Jenna’s Asian right? I don’t think me or anyone else said anything about having the name so call ‘fit’ the actress, just as long as the race does. Her character’s Asian and she’s Asian…pretty simple to me. I really wouldn’t expect you to understand, but there aren’t that many POC in tv anyway (and most of the time we’re regulated to stereotypical, caricatures) so it’s annoying and offensive when a character is obviously a POC and they’re played by a white actor or when they interchangeably use one type of Brown person for another. But again, I don’t really expect you to understand

          • Gary65

If an amazing Indian actress doesn’t audition, then it is ludicrous to suggest that a show, which isn’t even on a major network so it isn’t exactly rolling in cash, should have to waste time & money looking for one. That’s not the way the audition process works. You advertise the part, people audition & you pick the person you like best.

The idea that a person/character’s name should be in line with their race is one of the most racist things I’ve ever heard. It’s a name. If someone better than Jenna had auditioned for the role of Tina, then I see nothing wrong with hiring them over Tina. Just cos your name is Tina Cohen-Chang, that doesn’t mandate she has to be Asian. Asian parents can adopt white babies, you know. It’s also perfectly plausable for a white person to be Hindu. Do you think there aren’t any white people with an Indian passport or something?

If a black man and and an Indian woman got together and had a kid, it is perfectly plausable for their baby to be black. But, because she’s black, her mother should be banned from naming her child an Indian name? That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. You know nothing about the character whatsoever.

And, as I’ve already said, whitewashing isn’t what happened here. Felicia Terrell isn’t white.

          • DarrlynM

*blankstare*…..yup you still don’t get. Thanks for playing tho’

          • Gary65

What is there to get? Please explain how a person’s name should mandate their race, especially in a show where half the cast are POC.

          • DarrlynM

            ….

          • http://jensenandjared4ever.piczo.com/?cr=2 Amanpreet

as i said earlier to a post as long as the actress can portray the character well it shouldnt matter wat her/his race is

          • Adderall Addict

Seriously, people name their children of all sorts of races all sorts of names. Does it also annoy when a girl is given a name that an unenlightened mind might view as a boys (or vice versa). I agree that Boyd (who probably won’t have much of a role in S3 and I expect he’ll be dead soon if not already), but definitely Danny should have gotten more back story, but that a character names after an a Hindu god needs to be from India/Indian descent? Really? So any boy named by his parents Jesus is mis-named because they are not of the Hebrew race?

  • http://twitter.com/potterfan92 Raina

I don’t think show runners or head writer’s should have twitter accounts. I mean they get hate daily because of extreme fans not getting what they want. I’m surprised that Julie Plec still has her account. I think some people are too blinded by fanon than what is being betrayed on show and they forget why they liked the show in the first place..

  • Chris66

Those that have made these unwarranted and undeserved comments should hang their heads in shame and never call themselves fans again. All I can say to them is ‘well done’. For those of us who are real fans of Jeff’s and the show, we will now lose out of tweets from Jeff about the show, photo’s or whatever little gems he decided he was going to share with us. However if Jeff was becoming upset by these comments, then I believe he has done the right thing, no one deserves hate over the Internet, let alone someone who is simply trying to entertain and please their fans. To Jeff I would like to say ‘please do not be upset by this minority, who’s thoughtless comments have brought about your decision. I believe I speak for the majority here when I say, we understand and support you but will miss you and your tweets about the show. We look forward to series 3 with anticipation, I am sure it will be wonderful’.

  • dimensionallyt

People can be idiots, including many fans. But I don’t think he is entirely innocent in this drama. The guy isn’t exactly sensitive when it comes to handling criticism. He called fans “trolls.” Silly, very silly. The guy needs to go find some other showrunners and ask their advice on how to handle fans. He is clearly new to it and doesn’t quite comprehend the way fandom works. No matter how bad some fans are, showrunners always have to keep the higher moral ground (much as parents should when their child is screaming at them). They should always, unless they want to get into grief, ignore criticism or openly accept it and say thank you.

    • Thinkbeforeyouspeak

Have you seen the acting performance put on by Boyd and Danny? Perhaps that’s why their characters are not developing. So ridiculous how people are still resorting to racism, the lead character Scott is half mexican for god sake.

  • Rick

Actors, writers and directors shouldn’t be dealing with the public. That’s an unpleasant and fulltime job, and networks and studios have people who are trained to this. Creative people should stick to what they’re good at.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AAPZEUXGEM555GLP4YKJAM7ZUY Kandi B

Actually, I think it’s not that they using that an excuse, Kali is supose to be an love intrest for Derek. And The fans don’t want that becuse 1. it will make some viewers leave the show. 2. They want Derek and Stiles to hook up. (Sterek as they are called by some fans). This is what I think. This is just what I am thinking ok

  • Dor

I was enjoying his twitter so much, as well as the actors’ twitters. Can people just… not… ruin this? Like really, some people who take things too far, aren’t you embarrassed like at all? I’m embarrassed for you, I’m embarrassed to be apart of this fandom when shit like this happens.

  • Vivian

I’m sure it also has to do with the fact that production is ramping up again and he might not want to be bothered by Twitter or fans, and take their suggestions for the show. It’s less distracting and lets him write purely out of his imagination and not fans screaming at him.

  • HeroSk

This is completely stupid, all that people that attacked Jeff Davis are a group of ignorant idiots!! I can’t understand all that human stupidity… JEFF DAVIS is the creator he can do with his script whatever he WANTS! he doesn’t owes you something! If he wanted to interact with you people was just because he wants to be interactive with fans, and he gave something most of the writer don’t do! … give a chance to give opinions (reasonable like human, not like beasts) or even let’s you make a poll to help him decide some stuff! you should all be grateful for it! to write him, to have feedback, to say what would you like, to make him read your opinion! but that’s not enough isn’t it? you all want to feel like the writers of Teen Wolfs and become all shitty because he did something you don’t wanted, fuck off people REALLY, it’s HIS show, and none of you would decide for him, so if someday he gives a second chance to people, and REAL fans… don’t go all crappy, cause as I said before he doesn’t owe a thing to any of you, he is just giving something cause he wants to! so be nice, and positive. If you want to control someones series, go write your own stuff away, but this is HIS script

i miss Jeff, he was the first person ever from the show to respond to me, but if he was getting crap about the show, then i think he made the right choice. i just hope he knows the true fans still miss him, love him, and respect his decision.

i just found out he deleted his twitter i wanted some inside scoop and now i find out that wont b happening suks

I’d just like to point out that Kali’s race hasn’t been identified. If I were a half-black person, would it be okay for me to go by the name Kali? They didn’t say she was supposed to be Indian.

  • http://twitter.com/Nekopride Hilary j.c. Olson

I swear people need to play nice..and respect him. He is responsible for giving us this amazing show..and we need to honnor him for that..not yell at him and question his every choice..he has not failed us yet

  • http://twitter.com/xRomix3 Romina Korte

I feel so bad for him for being mistreaten, he’s so awesome and lovely, doesn’t deserve that! But it’s sad that I can’t ask him anything now. :/ But the idiots which threaten him deserved it…
