Merlin will end after its current fifth season, we learned late last night. Now, BBC has released a video interview in which Colin Morgan reacts to the news.

Fans were left shocked at the abrupt announcement from the BBC confirming that series 5 would indeed be Merlin’s last – and that, consequently, there are only five episodes left before the end.

Following the news, the cast of the show issued short statements reacting to the news. But this morning, we got a bit more of a personal response, as lead actor Colin Morgan participated in a video interview about the impending finale:

In the video, Morgan says that after five years, Merlin has “run its course,” and has come to a point where, “you wanna end on the strongest point, and I think we’ve achieved that.”

He also recalls his first day on set, where he was filming a scene from the second episode of the show with Richard Wilson, “who little did I know would end up becoming a really brilliant friend, and a really good guy to work with.”

Morgan goes on to preview the final series, which he says from the very beginning has, “a sense of impending doom.” Merlin is shown that Arthur will die, and this will hang over his head for the rest of the year. We have already seen him become more ruthless and determined in the eight episodes that have aired thus far, and Morgan warns that, “I think there’s a part of him that knows it’s coming and that he’ll try all he can to prevent it, but there’s greater things at work.”

As such, Merlin is feeling a lot more confident and powerful, Morgan explains, but he can’t battle fate itself. Is Morgan telling us that Arthur will indeed die?

“By the end,” he says, “I think Merlin maybe realises, ‘Maybe this is actually the way it was supposed to be. Maybe this is what my destiny was building up to.’ And it’s terrible and it’s not a nice thing to go through, but I think he starts to click onto that.”

Finally, Morgan talks about the support from the fans. “I know this is the end, and I know this is in a way goodbye, and in a way, from us, it’s a massive thank you for being there on the journey with us and coming along, and enjoying the ride. Because it’s been a lot of fun.”

This is just so sad because here in the US a full season is at least 22 episodes and we have only had 2.5 seasons really from Merlin.I will really miss this series I have loved it from episode 1 and even though some were better then others I appreciated the incredible acting skills of Colin Morgan and Richard Wilson and Bradley James.

My heart bleeds, although I watched every episode from the beginning on line of course, I hoping for more, I enjoyed it all, and even though the world revolves around me, I guess every good thing has to come to an end at some point in time. That was frelling amazing!

It’s a great show. If they went by the book, they could go from youth to old age for the characters. Hope rumors true about two full length moves with these great actors.

It’s been 2 months now and I still miss Merlin so much. I’m still watching the old episodes and I’m still having a hard time accepting its gone. It was an amazing show and so sad to see it go. I feel they finished it too quickly just ONLY in the 5th season and the ending to quickly with so many questions left behind. Im hoping for a miracle with a continuation of Merlin with the same cast and also explaining the ending because we have so many questions. Only a continuation will explain all the fans the answers.
