Former Doctor Who star David Tennant has always expressed interest in reprising his lead role for the show’s 50th Anniversary – but have recent comments revealed he will indeed be back?

He’s frequently been voted the fandom’s favourite Doctor, and David Tennant is a self-confessed Doctor Who addict. Perhaps that’s why rumors of his return have been rife ever since he announced his departure way back in 2008. The Scottish actor didn’t help matters when he confessed his excitement about the prospects of a Doctor Who reunion for the show’s 50th Anniversary next year, and continued to admit he would love to return in subsequent interviews over the last year.

Things have been quiet on that front recently though, with Tennant managing to avoid any intrusive questions. Until last night, that is. While promoting his new film Nativity 2 on the red carpet earlier this week, the Hamlet thespian was asked once more about the prospects of reprising the role of the Tenth Doctor alongside Matt Smith. His answer was noticeably more guarded, as you can see in the video below (courtesy of Red Carpet News TV).

In case you missed it, Tennant responded with the following:

“I can’t imagine there even are gonna be any anniversary celebrations, are there? Look at my agent getting twitchy!”

The sudden change in statement is suspicious enough as it is, and when coupled with his jocular delivery it really seems like David is trying to hint at something here (namely that he has signed on to return).

Doctor Who stars have a habit of inadvertently confirming things through hints as the BBC secrecy rules are so strict. Just earlier this year, Matt Smith confirmed the return of the Ice Warriors and Cybermen in next year’s run while at a convention by not saying anything in particular – greeted with laughter and applause from a grateful audience. With the mention of David’s agent, it seems he was really trying to tiptoe around the question.

Would you like to see David Tennant return to Doctor Who?

Oh gosh, I’m in my school library supposedly studying. Everyone is looking at me wierdly for jumping up and down and my mini-fangirl squeal. I feel like David Tennant is going to be involved in some way or another, at least giving an interview or something, but if he is that “Aniversery? What aniversery?” about it, then he has to be doing something big! Lets hope my favorite Doctor comes back!

He is hiding something I know it!!

  • Phantomfluteplayer

Oh please, oh please, oh please! I would be SO happy if he were to return!

He’s so totally coming back :) there’s no reason he wouldn’t be if they’re bringing back old Doctors (even for cameos) he loves Doctor Who and seemed to really enjoy playing The Doctor so I really doubt he’d ever be opposed. If they’re bringing back old Doctors he is in.

Is there any doubt? I mean, really? At this point if they do anything less than a multi-Doctor story I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed. And Tennant is certainly at the top of the list of guys who’d come back.

The REAL question is who else are they going to get? Davison wouldn’t be a shock as he’s appeared briefly before. McCoy has been more active lately, what with the Hobbit – I think people could see him popping in. Tom Baker would be a prize if he did a tiny little thing.

I’m personally praying for Eccleston (‘my Doctor’) to show up. And speaking of dudes who need more screen-time as the Doctor, getting McGann’s 8th Doctor back would be a huge thing for the fans. Arguably even bigger than a Tom Baker cameo – at least to the hardcore.

Whoa. You’re like…a genius. I can so see that happening. I don’t think it will, but I can see it!

      • http://harrymyland.com/ Harry Myland

It would be amazing if something like that happened but yeah, doubt it. Maybe I can pitch it to IDW or whoever has control of the comics these days, yeah? :P

Well since the Omega hints have been showing up these last few seasons, do you think the 50th tv movie will be a “Three Doctors” part two kinda thing, with 9,10,11 and Omega returning as the villain?

          • http://harrymyland.com/ Harry Myland

That’s a thing I could get behind. Maybe Omega played a part in sparking the Time War? Part of me hopes the story winds up being something epic like that, though the other part of me thinks it’ll wind up be a cute little one-off thing like the Children in Need specials.

I think it would be cool if the current Doctor went back and get his older forms of himself. And older companions. For the ultimate battle off.

  • daff69

YES HE NEEEEEEEEEDS to be back!!! it would be hilarious to see the two of them together!! only a year to wait and see..

i think they should have some of the Doctors who are still living and all of them answer the oldest question in time…Doctor Who?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002255052909 Remy Quist

In another radio interview he said very excited at this question: Ooooh I almost said something I shouldn’t have. And then the usual stuff came, that he would love to but that he doesn’t know anything about it.

I love David, but for the good of the show, I do hope that they either split the focus evenly between multiple Doctors or keep the main focus on Matt.

I’m sure if 10 does come back it will still focus on Matt… But imagine them side by side…… :0

      • LilyLuna

The Tenth and Eleventh Doctor interacting? That might be too much awesome for one space, not that anyone’d be complaining. Xp

Please please please, dear god, please! He has to come back!

  • Jj

To be fair, there is still a David Tennant doctor on parallel Earth from Rose Tyler’s final appearance. So…it can be done

    • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.hanks.77 Thomas Hanks

Yes but this is the parallel earth and Im him!!!!….. I even built a motorcycle in tribute to my sexy box that the real doctor took with him….. : ) j/k… just let me keep believing it…..

A multi doctor story with 7,8,9,10 and 11 and with 8 regenerating into 9. If this was announced I would literally cry rivers of pure joy!

  • Glaciusx

We all know he’d come back. He loved playing 10!!! Now what I really want to know is if Christopher Eccleston is coming back!!! I loved his portrayal as the Doctor and I would really love to see him back.

  • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.hanks.77 Thomas Hanks

Ummmmm yes but I want him to be at Galifrey One and sit on my TARDIS motorcycle too….. but alas he won’t be there…. :(

  • lynziferg

I’m torn between having Tentoo and Rose back and being able to have 9 without giving him too much info about his future self. Could it work?

  • superbr0o

  • DeTroyes

A special with all 11 Doctors is what I want. We certainly have the technology to use CGI wo recreate any actors who are dead.

  • doctor fan

When the 9th doctor was regenerating in front of rose he was very calm about it… almost as if Hebrew that it would happen… just saying…

  • doctor fan

When the 9th doctor regenerated in front of rose he was very calm about it almost as if he knew that it was going to happen…

how disappointing would it be if the world ended in 2012?
