It’s a big night for Doctor Who fans, as the BBC unveil a prologue, a trailer for, and the title of this year’s Christmas special – Jenna Louise-Coleman’s debut as the new companion!

It was way back in the Spring that Emmerdale and Titanic star Jenna-Louise Coleman was announced as the new Doctor Who companion. Back then, we knew we had a long wait in front of us before we saw her television debut – which is why it was such a big surprise when she popped up nearly four months early. If we thought her early appearance meant we would understand more about her character, we were sadly mistaken. After Oswin Oswald turned out to be a Dalek and died, we were more in the dark than ever before.

Finally, we have a bit more context as to who Clara is – as well as the threats she will be facing when she jumps into the TARDIS for the first time!

Check out the prologue “The Great Detective” below, courtesy of the BBC.

“The Great Detective” sees Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax appealing for the Doctor’s help – only to find that he has retired. Will anyone be able to convince him to come out of his mourning period and save the day? Probably, and we imagine her name is Clara.

Along with the prologue came the trailer for the episode, which it has been revealed will be called “The Snowmen”.

There’s a brilliant new prequel to the Christmas Special starring Matt Smith as the Time Lord and featuring a number of familiar faces… If you need any more incentive to tune in we’ll just add that it was written by Steven Moffat!

Aside from that, there’s a new, exclusive preview trailer of the Christmas Special that includes the first glimpse of the Doctor with his new companion… Both items will be on BBC One on Friday, 16 November and will be available to view online soon after their Children in Need premiere.

“The Snowmen” airs (unsurprisingly) on December 25, starring Matt Smith, Jenna-Louise Coleman and Richard E. Grant.

What do you think of the prologue?

Ooooh the Doctor is like Scrooge a little bit isn’t he?

    • https://twitter.com/#!/HarriSargeant Harri Sargeant

He’s like a cross between Scrooge and the Mad Hatter!

Total contrast to last Christmas special when he was the person that gave the ‘scrooge’ (Kazran) the Christmas spirit, now he’s the Scrooge and the one that needs the Christmas spirit. Jenny and Vastra are going to be his ghosts of Christmas past (as they are from his past and live in the Victorian era), Strax is going to be his Christmas present since he’s attempting to shock the Doctor into living in the present and becoming himself again and Clara is going to be his ghost of Christmas future, leading him into a future without the Ponds. Also it’s interesting that his outfit looks like a distressed and dark representation of grief and yet it looks a little like the outfit he wore at Amy and Rory’s wedding. Last Christmas special he took Amy and Rory on their honeymoon, so the outfit is a little symbolic in a couple of ways. I’m still thinking that this outfit might not be permanent though? maybe just for the Victorian episodes.

A companion from the Victorian era. Cool.

    • SpiritWitch120

But they said that the new companion has incredible computer skills. I’m pretty sure computers hadn’t been invented during the Victorian era.

It’s a show about time travel. I think they’ll make it work.

        • LilyLuna

Agreed, wibbly wobbly, timey wimey. ;)

Moffat confirmed a while ago that Clara is an earth girl from the 21st century but that the Doctor meets her under unusual circumstances. On WhoHype they were speculating that she somehow got stuck in Victoria England prior to meeting the Doctor :)

  • matthewhpg

Anyone else a little underwhelmed by the title? Other than that, looks amazing!

    • Elphaba Thropp

Same…it sounds a bit like something they would use for a cartoon show :/

      • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

the episode itself looks great though :)

    • Jay Ferrar

It’s a reference to the classic Christmas story, “The Snowman.” All of Moffat’s Christmas special titles are references to other works.

      • matthewhpg

Did not get the reference, thank you!

  • http://forgiveyourmind.tumblr.com/ Tariq

I declare war against the moon! Ahaha, that was great. I can’t wait for this Christmas!

  • Karen Rought

This looks great!! I got a Mary Poppins vibe when he was sitting on top of that cloud, though, haha. And the intro to the trailer? Matt and Jenna are such teases! Dying to see this.

  • matthewhpg

Okay, great, NOW can we have another WhoHype?

    • https://twitter.com/#!/HarriSargeant Harri Sargeant

I am and always will be the optimist. The hoper of far-flung hopes and dreamers of improbable dreams.

      • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

Translation = a WhoHype episode is coming soon and you’ll be on it?

        • https://twitter.com/#!/HarriSargeant Harri Sargeant

I can’t imagine there even are gonna be any new episodes, are there? Look at my agent getting twitchy! (Yes)

          • LilyLuna

Yay! And I totally see what you did there. Xp

  • ravenclaw1991

I’m even more excited! I love Jenna so I know I’m going to love Clara! :) The snowmen are freaky! Thanks Moffat for giving me another normal thing to fear. I love Strax’s vendetta against the moon xD

    Can’t wait!

  • Phantomfluteplayer

For one of the first times, I am thankful that Houston, Texas doesn’t get much in terms of snowfall. :)

    • Becca

Heyy I’m from H-town as well! We don’t have to worry about being scared of this episode! Ha!

      • belac889

        You lucky little b*st*rds

  • Elphaba Thropp

    Can NOT wait!!! *squeals*

My poor family, they already get an earful of Doctor Who daily, now they’ll have to deal with these two videos being all I talk about for the next couple of days…

  • Genny

Honestly this made me miss Karen so much more. Not because I don’t want a new companion because I am really looking forward to that! But just because Matt and Jenna don’t know each other as well as Matt and Karen did and though they were funny together I missed that natural camaraderie in the intro! I loved their friendship just as much as that between the Doctor and Amy!

    • http://www.facebook.com/risa.ramirez1 Risa Ramirez

The same went with Rose and 10 though. It was just so magical. Every single companion just takes getting used to. By the time Matt leaves (I believe at the end of this season is the talk) it will be sad for us all.

ohh..Doctor looks like Scrooge lol. Well, this is an interesting twist

and by God do i miss that music!

  • https://twitter.com/maramawhyte Marama Whyte

SHE IS SO PERFECT EVEN OUT OF CHARACTER. woah. but seriously.

  • Katie

Whoa. I’m genuinely intrigued… the “retirement” concept is brilliant. I just hope Clara doesn’t get Martha’d.
By the way, has anyone seen Matt in “Ruby in the Smoke” (with Billie Piper)? Because this reminds me of his ‘look’ in that film. I think the setting was Victorian as well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/katgiambruno Kat Giambruno

Perhaps Clara is telling the children about the Doctor based on her experiences in the asylum. you smile, smile, smile/Yes I do/It fills my heart with sunshine all the while/Yes it does/’Cause all I really need’s a smile, smile, smile/From these happy friends of mine
