Hollow Earth by John Barrowman and Carole Barrowman is a story that rivals those from Garth Nix and Phillip Pullman. The story pulls you in and takes you on a journey that is both entertaining and suspenseful.
The story follows twins Matt and Emily who have special powers that they are meant to keep secret. Unfortunately, one boring trip to the art museum and their powers are revealed to all the wrong people. Matt and Emily have a power known as “animare,” which is the ability to bring artwork to life or enter into the artwork. The twins live with their mother who is aware of their powers and constantly trying to keep them protected. After the incident at the museum, the twins and their mom have to flee their home and head to their grandfather to help protect them. The twins are hiding from a truly terrifying villain who wants to use their power to free the demons, devils, and creatures that live in the Hollow Earth.
Emily and Matt are likable characters that readers will connect with. They each have a strong, unique voice that is enjoyable to read. Their mother and grandfather are great adults to have in the story. They understand what it is like to be special and the twins are always loved and cared for. The story is well paced and will hold the attention of all ages of readers. The descriptions of the artwork, artists, and the knowledge of illuminating a book add depth of the story.
Overall, Hollow Earth is a must read for lovers of unique stories that are incredibly written. When reading the story, it gave me that feeling I had when first reading the Harry Potter series. It felt like I was reading something special that was written with care and great imagination. Hollow Earth is meant to be a trilogy and I look forward to reading the rest of the books.
