Last night, several Hypable staff members were on hand for J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy event held at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Held at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City, the event featured a conversation, question and answer, reading, and book signing by J.K. Rowling herself. Rowling was interviewed by novelist Ann Patchett (State of Wonder), who owns Parnassus Books in Nashville.

The event opened with Patchett getting a bit choked up and thanking Rowling for her immense contribution not only to literature but to independent book stores all over the world.

During the question and answer portion of the evening, Patchett proposed several interesting questions to which Rowling had equally if not more intriguing answers. Below are some quote highlights from Rowling:

- Rowling has said on numerous occassions that she has not read E.L. James’ hugely successful book Fifty Shades of Grey, and during the event said, “The difference is that people have sex in my book, but no one enjoys it.” Rowling and Patchett both went on to say that neither of them had read the popular book, with Patchett adding, “Everyone tells me the writing is terrible.”

- An audience member submitted a question asking Rowling what fictional place (magical or otherwise) would Rowling like to live, to which she replied, “I still walk in and out of Hogwarts.”

- Patchett brought up Pottermore to Rowling, asking what made her interested in doing something so unique, to which Rowling replied, “I saw a possibility of giving a high quality product across loads of territories.”

- Rowling also said that her biggest challenge from moving from children’s genre to the adult genre in The Casual Vacancy was writing in a structure that didn’t include a central character.

- Patchett brought up the fact that there may be young children that will see J.K. Rowling’s name on the book and want to read it, to which Rowling replied it “might be appropriate for the right 14 or 15-year-old, but not any younger than that.”

Following the stage event, all 2,500 cheering fans lined up row-by-row to meet Rowling and acquire a copy of The Casual Vacancy which she also signed. Hypable staff members John, Tariq, Jen, Laura, Sarah and Kristen met up with authors Elizabeth Eulberg, Beth Revis and Victoria Schwab, just before the event started outside of Lincoln Center and took this great photo:

Recently, we asked Hypable readers what they would want to say to J.K. Rowling in one sentence if given the chance to meet her. Those who commented on this post had their comment inserted in to a letter that would be delivered to Rowling at last night’s event. We are happy to report that Jo did receive the letter, signed, sealed and delivered!

After the event, Tariq, Sarah and John were overjoyed to have met J.K. Rowling herself, as well as have their copies of The Casual Vacancy signed:

John also ran into a couple of Hypable fans, Sarah and Linda, who were just as ecstatic as he was to get to meet J.K. Rowling and have their books signed:

Last night’s event was J.K. Rowling’s only event in the United States as she promotes her latest book, The Casual Vacancy, which made the event extra special for those fans who managed to attend.

Did you attend last night’s event in NYC? Let us know what you thought of the event in the comments below!

Hypable will continue to cover The Casual Vacancy as Jo finishes her Stateside promotion.

It was an incredible experience to hear this amazing woman speak. Ms. Rowling was funny, insightful and sweet the entire night – including the long line of fans waiting to have her sign a copy of the book. Truly a dream come true I never thought I’d get a chance to live out!

I still don’t think it’s quite sunk in yet. Amazing night.

I was there & she answered the question I submitted about writing towards children vs adults :D !! Jo was beautiful and brilliant as always. So glad I finally had a chane to meet her.

I heard your name Tess! I thought I recognized it!

  • Mitchell Johnson

I was there, too – it was amazing. She answered my question about which literary place she’d like to live in. Surreal experience!

    • Rohey Jah

That was a great question and her response was incredibly touching! :)

    • http://hypable.com John Thrasher

Fantastic question! Looks like most of the people whose questions were used in the event are Hypable readers too! <3

    • Liz

That was a wonderful question and her response was my favorite part of the evening!! Thanks so much for asking it :)!

    • Arielle

      What was her answer?

      • Mitchell Johnson

She mentioned Meryton, Hogwarts, and Moonacre. The way she spoke of Hogwarts was very heartfelt and moving – I hope they post the whole video soon so we can all watch it again.

  • Gary65

Wow. Tariq looks nothing like I would have thought.

      • Gary65

Oh no, it’s not a bad thing. It’s just I had a certain image in my head and from hearing the voice and you look way different. I thought the same thing about John when I first saw him.

  • Rohey Jah

It still hasn’t sunk in and I don’t think it will ever sink in. I just can’t even fathom how a person can be so beautiful inside and out. She’s such an incredible woman and I feel blessed to have been in attendance. The way she looks directly into your eyes when she speaks to you is just amazing. And when I handed her my personal letter she said “And I WILL read it!” So very surreal.

It was such an amazing night! At points there was raucous laughter and at others it was so silent you could literally hear a pin drop. She was simply enchanting. And meeting my idol and inspiration is a memory I will never forget.

I was there, and it may possibly be the best experience of my life. I was so excited, and then as soon as she walked on stage, I just started bawling, lol. When she signed my book, I tried to tell her how much she means to me and I started bawling again and I don’t think she understood half of what I said, haha. What a great night!!

I was there too! It was just such an amazing, incredible experience, I still can’t believe it happened.

  • Chelsea

I was there too and it was an amazing night. The first hour just flew by – honestly, I think I can listen to J.K. Rowling talk forever. She’s so eloquent and brilliant, and funny too.

  • nova

Such a great night. I was last row mezzanine and when I got my book signed she looked at me and said “Thanks for waiting.” I was like, wait, what? J.K. Rowling is thanking me for waiting for her autograph!

  • SnapesGirl

She was so amazing. So happy I got to meet her!

  • Jason

I would’ve loved to been there. But I had to settle for the presidential debate.

  • Sarah

Awesome article! It was so great meeting you and Tariq! I’m still amazed that this actually happened! Jo is so amazing and brilliant and wonderful.

  • http://twitter.com/bowski477 Jill

Thanks for passing along our comments to her. It makes me feel fuzzy that she may read something I wrote to her :)

  • joyce

very emotional and satisfying. too bad there wasn’t adequate sound and a large screen for most of the audience to enjoy the interview. sitting in the third row center orchestra was fine, but felt sorry that Little, Brown/ Koch Theatre didn’t spend a little money to do it right for everyone. Ann Patchett did a great job!

  • DarrensGirl

She said she liked my Gryffindor scarf!!! I could barely breathe. I can’t believe I met my Queen!!

    • DarrensGirl

And I sat right next to Melissa Anelli

  • Zack

“Thank you so much,” I said to her. I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t only saying thank you for signing my book, but for EVERYTHING.
She looked right in my eyes and said, “Aw, it’s my pleasure! Thank you for waiting,” and she smiled.
I have finally, FINALLY met THE J.K. Rowling.

  • http://benchpressabear.tumblr.com Joan

Rowling and Patchett both went on to say that neither of them had read the popular book, with Patchett adding, “Everyone tells me the writing is terrible.”

    “Everyone” told Patchett the truth.

I was there too, with my best friend Vania. We met because of Harry Potter and have been the best of friends ever since. We were thrilled to have been able to share this experience together- we never thought that our dream to meet her would have come true for us both at the same time, or ever. It was definitely one of the best days of my life and will forever be etched into my memory. When she signed my book I thanked her and asked quickly if it ” Was wrong to love Bellatrix?” (My favorite villian)…at first I thought she hadn’t heard me and the security people were moving us down the line, but as I was about to walk away she looked at me with those amzing blue eyes and said ” Yes…it’s a little wrong.” I could have just died right there on the spot. Hopefully she doesn’t think I’m odd for liking Bellatrix…she is a great villian. Sometimes people say it’s best to not meet your heros because they usually disappoint, but J.K. Rowling was just the sweetest, most brilliant and lovely person. I’m so happy I got to meet her.

I was there, too! I still can’t believe I was able to meet and speak with her! Definitely one of the best moments of my life. I will never forget it!
