At the end of Saturday’s Merlin episode, which concluded the series 5 premiere “Arthur’s Bane,” Arthur and the knights returned to Camelot, and Arthur (in a prime display of why he is apparently his own bane) knighted Mordred, the druid prophesized to kill him.
But Mordred will not be the most immediate threat to the safety of Arthur and his kingdom. Because as the promo for episode three, “The Death Song of Uther Pendragon,” revealed, Arthur will be given the power to bring back the dead. And the young king will not be able to resist resurrecting the only parent he has ever known, Uther Pendragon (Anthony Stewart Head).
But as we saw with Lancelot last year, bringing people back from beyond the grave comes with a price, and it looks like Uther will be using his spirit powers to torment those close to Arthur whom the former king deems to be threats to the kingdom he has built: Gwen the servant-turned-queen, and Merlin the sorcerer-turned-friend.
Read the official episode description for “The Death Song of Uther Pendragon”:
When a stranger gives Arthur the power to summon the dead, the king finds himself torn between head and heart. Unable to resist temptation, he seizes the chance to speak to the person he misses most – his father, Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head). But the spirit world is a dark and dangerous place, for little does Arthur realise that his decision comes at a terrible price. Against all odds, Merlin must put right Arthur’s mistake before Camelot, and everything they have built, is destroyed forever.
The episode will air this Saturday at 20:25 on BBC One.
