As promised, last night Harry Potter and The Casual Vacancy author J.K. Rowling appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

You can now watch an extended version of her interview which didn’t air last night.

Stewart, if you don’t know, is a comedian and well-educated interviewer, so what came of this interview is a very fun but serious conversation. For example, the conversation turns to the part of Rowling’s life where she was on welfare, and Stewart notes that getting assistance from the government paid off very well for the United Kingdom.

Later in the conversation, Rowling starts explaining The Casual Vacancy‘s plot. Stewart replies, “And if I may spoil it…” Rowling cuts him off, then says “Dumbledore comes back.” After a debate over whether or not the American political parties had switched their colors, Rowling then suggests America needs a monarch and goes so far to say the Queen would probably take us back.

Today Rowling will host a Q&A, reading, and signing of The Casual Vacancy at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Hypable staff will be on hand to cover the event. We’ll also be passing along a list of sentence-long messages you gave us to pass on to Rowling.

Omg, Jo and Jon Stewart having a conversation about politics together on The Daily Show. Could it be any better?
I loved her before, and I love her even more now that I know how much she knows and how many (and good!) opinions she have about today’s society. Rock on, queen!

  • Allison Shannon

I’m moving to England. All hail the Queen!

      • ladybirds

Watched the Part 2 but still no luck with Part 1. Thanks. :-)

  • Hermione Granger

Omg! I think the topic of the next presidential debate should be about whether we should rejoin England. It would definitely be more interesting and potentially useful!

    • Amy

Considering the current economy is far worse in the uk than us- I think they majority would say NO, no matter how cool England is they have the Magna Carta not the Declaration of Independence
Meaning, I can do stuff in the US as a citizen I wouldn’t be able to do in England
And I would hate having those things taken away
The us broke from England for a reason

      • Hermione Granger

Um… okay. I was making a humorous comment sometimes referred to as a joke… not trying to cause a political argument here.

  • http://twitter.com/atalyce Alyce

argh, doesn’t work outside of America. Really wanted to see it!

  • Manda

Does any one know a link that works in australia? :(

  • Lauren

  • rubyphoenix

“I can’t speak for the Queen…” What?! She isn’t the queen of England!?…She might as well be the adored figurehead.

  • http://twitter.com/Celtise celtise

Anyone got other links that will possibly work in the UK/Ireland? Not having any lucky finding ones myself so far.

  • Peg

Interestingly, I believe I read an article in the last month suggesting that Jo herself also allowed reporters to interview her under the condition that quotes were pre-approved before publication.
