Shailene Woodley is the lead choice to play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, according to reports.

Woodley is the main choice to star as Watson, according to Variety, who broke the news. The studio is also in the process of deciding on a villain and Harry Osborn (Peter Parker’s best friend and eventual enemy – as seen in the original Spider-Man film series played by James Franco). The news comes at a good time for Woodley as The Secret Life of the American Teenager on ABC Family was just canceled today. Season 5 will be its last.

Variety believes that one of the choices is Electro (also known as Max Dillon), “an enemy of Spider-Man who gains the ability to control electricity after being struck by lightning. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the character first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #9 in February 1964.”

Just a couple of weeks ago we learned that Marc Webb will return to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Webb wasn’t sure about returning for a sequel, as he was too preoccupied with the first installment that he couldn’t make a decision.

After making $751 million worldwide, there was zero doubt that a sequel would be made with Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. Spidey fans domestic and overseas came out in droves to see the Spider-Man reboot and despite slipping to a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was well received by its core audience.

It will be interesting to see how the re-introduction of Mary Jane so soon after Kirsten Dunst vacated the role, and for Harry Osborn, for that matter. Obviously having talented actors will be the first step in that direction.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters May 2, 2014. Meanwhile, the first Amazing Spider-Man will be released on DVD/Blu-ray in November, in time for the Holiday season.

Are you happy with Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane?

I’m more excited about the possible casting of Electro than Shailene as MJ. There are so many awesome Spider-man villains and I’m glad they’re looking to go with a lesser known one. Also excited about Harry Osborn, and the lack of news about Norman makes me hope that they’ll tackle the inevitable Gwen Stacy storyline in the third movie rather than the second.
As for Shailene, I’m not too familiar with her work, but she was nominated for a Golden Globe, so that kind of speaks for itself. I’m just hoping they have MJ’s “Face it, tiger… You just hit the jackpot” line.

  • rebecca

Um, eww. She is NOT mj material

    • hola

what the f does this mean?….

      • Guest

she looks like shes 15 at the most, any comic fan would immediatly have a problem with her since Parker doesn’t actually meet MJ until after highschool- early first year of college. she doesn’t have the MJ look to me either, but I don’t think “eww” is the best term…

        • stargazer

Though if you read the comics Peter didn’t meet Gwen until he was in college either. His first real crush was Betty Brant, J. Jonah Jameson’s secretary, who kept telling him she was a little old for him. So since they’re focusing on having him in high school, meeting his real girlfriends in high school instead of college, it makes sense for him to meet MJ in high school too. (And, for the record, he met MJ after he met Gwen, and they didn’t become a couple until after Gwen was (insert something here))

  • alyssamz

She won a golden globe, im not worried about her acting. Im just having a hard time seeing her with bright red hair, but im sure it will work out great. :)

    • Jason

      Nom-in-ated.

      • peeta

Thats more than some others can say

  • Kayce Potter

    NOOOOO!

  • WhatTheGrace

She’s a good actress but she’s a bit young. Hmmm

    • http://twitter.com/ivangatewood Ivan Gatewood

Kind of fitting since Peter Parker is supposed to be in High School lol

      • Jess

But Andrew is a lot older so she might look younger next to him

        • WhatTheGrace

That’s what i meant, Andrew is almost 30 i think.

  • d3erudite

    Oh fuck no.

  • isenhobbitz

I think she’ll be great! She’s a fantastic actress (when given a chance…I’m really glad Secret Life is finally ending so she can move on to better things). I’m sure they’ll test many shades of red until they find one that fits her complexion, so people should stop fretting about that. Also, in this movie franchise, Peter is still in high school, and Woodley looks like she’s in high school…..so why is everyone up in arms about her looking too young?

  • Ultron

    I want mysterio!

  • Kristi

I thought she was great in The Descendants! But.. Mary Jane? I don’t know… I feel she can’t pull off her personality…

  • Esmeblabbed

Seriously not impressed with this casting choice…

  • DDDDDD

not MJ MATERIAL. SHE IS SUCH A BAD ACTRESS

  • BronzeSparks123

    What about Gwen?

    • Meg

You might want to read the wikipedia page on Gwen Stacey…

      • stargazer

Don’t worry. If they stick to the comics he won’t cheat on Gwen. He meets MJ but they don’t become a couple until later. (and that’s about as spoiler-free as I can make this topic)

  • andiesaywhat?

no no no no no no no no no no no non no no no no no no no no no no no no no.

  • Sarah

Can’t we just… not follow the comics with this? Gwen is a much stronger female character than Mary Jane. Really, just screw MJ. She’s kind of useless.

  • http://twitter.com/CassiopeiaDrake Cassie Drake

You know who I would’ve wanted for MJ? EMMA STONE! But nooooo! She’s GWEN instead!

    • CarmelCorn24

I would want Karen Gillan, because i think she’d be AMAZING, but I know she’s waay too old for the MJ role, especially in high school XD

Kristen Dunst will always be MJ for me.
