  • Today Fox announced they’ve set the new judges panel for the upcoming twelfth season of American Idol: Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Randy Jackson are all on board.

Despite talk of becoming a mentor, long time judge Randy Jackson will return and be joined by newcomers Carey (who had been announced in July), Urban, and Minaj. The four will be appearing at the Idol New York auditions today.

In their announcement, Fox President of Alternative Entertainment said, “With an unparalleled star like Mariah, fan-favorite Randy, chart-toppers like Nicki and Keith and our incomparable host Ryan, we’ve put together one of the most exciting judging panels around.” Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller chimed in, “Idol’s star power has never been so great.”

Idol has had a rotating door of judges over the years as it tries to keep itself fresh and appealing to as many people as possible. Stars like Ellen Degeneres, Kara DioGuardi appeared around the time Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul were heading out. The past two season of Idol had judging panels made up of Jackson, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez.

We’re having a hard time imagining Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Randy Jackson with solid group chemistry – an all too important aspect of talent competition shows. Vote in our poll below to let us know if you’re satisfied.

I honestly believe that this will be a GREAT season!! I love all 3 of these new judges and I think they will bring a lot to the show!

I have always been a fan of Idol but at this point, I think they need to stop. Compared to past winners like Kelly and Carrie, you don’t really hear much about the winners these days (except for maybe Scotty). They’ll get some radio play but then they just kinda disappear. (Taylor Hicks, anyone?) The show just isn’t what it used to be and they now seem desperate to hold onto anyone as judges. Simon and Paula left, Steven and Jennifer (I really enjoyed both of them) and now they seem to be settling for the first person to say they want in. Nicki Minaj? Really? Compared to Mariah Carey and Keith Urban, she just isn’t up to par. Now that we have The Voice, X-Factor, and so many other talent shows, I think it’s just time to put Idol to rest. It had a good run, but all shows must come to an end eventually. I don’t know, maybe this season will be great. I just know so many people, including myself, have lost interest in what used to be a really entertaining show.

It’s a little early to tell if they’ll do any good…considering we won’t even see anything until January. It’s quite a variety…but we’ll see. I love Keith Urban, though. <3

I’ll tune in to see Keith. ;)

Fox: Do yourself a favor already and cancel this garbage dump of a show. It hasn’t produced a successful artist in over five years and adding these jokes of their respective style of music as judges is only turning this program into a caricature of its former self.

Why would Fox cancel it’s most successful show? I don’t think Fox cares if Idol produces a successful artist. As long as people tune in, Idol will be around for a long time.

I think there should be an “No way. I stopped watching after season 2.” option in this poll.

Does Nicki Minaj even sing? I was under the impression she just talked with background music

I’m glad that Randy is staying. I still love him, and I like that there’s still an original judge around! (Even though I don’t regularly watch the show anymore..)

I have watched many seasons of Idol and enjoyed it for the most part. I think once Simon left, it should have been done. The judges were good last season but it’s just time to move on and let go.

Keith is fantastic on The Voice Australia! So he should be great on this

Talent must be had inorder to judge other’s talent, therefore Niki Minaj shouldn’t be on this show.
