The saga of Final Fantasy XIII heroine Lightning will continue in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix announced today at a celebration for the series’ 25th anniversary at PAX Prime.
Lightning Returns is a direct sequel to this year’s Final Fantasy XIII-2 and is planned for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013.
The game world touches on three themes: gothic, mechanical and fantasy.
Square Enix is promising more expansive environments spread across four different islands in the game as well as more interaction with the player character including the ability to jump, hide behind cover and be more mobile in combat. The first island revealed is Luxuria, City of Light.
A monorail that adheres to the schedule will connect the four islands and serve as transportation for the player.
Players will be able to customize Lightning, changing her abilities depending on the weapons and armor you choose.
“This is the most customization you’ll be able to do with a Final Fantasy character,” a representative for Square Enix said during the presentation.
The story of Lightning Returns focuses on a Doomsday Clock that shows only 13 days until the world ends. The game world will incorporate a day/night schedule and will be affected by the clock as the game progresses.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will conclude the trilogy that started with the original Final Fantasy XIII.
