Innocent Darkness is a book that defies labels and takes you on an adventure you won’t soon forget. Susan Lazear has crafted a great mash-up of steampunk and fairy tales.
The story follows Noli, a rather rambunctious teenage girl, who builds flying cars for fun and then accidentally crashes them. Noli is not your typical heroine, and due to her behavior she is sent off to boarding school. It is here that Noli manages to wish herself into the fey world. This fey lore is not like most we’ve seen. Noli is there for a purpose that is unknown to her but has great importance to the fey world.
Noli is a strong character. She has a lot of growing to do, and she constantly has to prove to the world that staying true to herself is the best option. She goes through many changes throughout the book and through it all she doesn’t give up. Noli has difficulty figuring out her feelings on some matters, which in itself is sweet and realistic.
There is of course a love triangle; however, it doesn’t feel forced. It is complicated and challenging to Noli in ways she didn’t expect. At times the plot was a little slow and the point of view switched frequently in some areas, but overall it is a good read.
The unique combination of steampunk and fairy tale along with the interesting fey lore keeps the story interesting.
