The Ninth Doctor actor has suggested that he would like to return to the character, and just in time for the 50th anniversary!

OMG! Daleks reports that Eccleston (who played the Ninth Doctor in series 1 of the revived show) made the comments while taking part in a Q&A for Antigone at the National Theatre. The site quotes a fan’s experience of the event, in which the actor confirmed that he felt he had more to do with his character.

His comments are a bit of a turnaround, as Chris has repeatedly been cagey when asked about the prospects of a return. In fact, on several occasions the thespian has flat out refused to come back. However, when asked by an attendee whether he felt he took the Doctor as far as he could – his reply was (surprisingly) “no.”

“[He] felt that one series isn’t enough to get under the skin of the character,” the report reads. “And that if he’d had two or three series he’d have developed the role considerably. “He said that if you looked at the other Doctors (with the exception of Tom Baker) you can see them working out how to play the character through their first series because it’s such a complex and challenging role.” While those comments do appear positive, the blog’s final sentence is the one that got us the most excited: “He said several times that there was more for him to do with the character…”

While it doesn’t look like he’ll be knocking down doors to jump back into the TARDIS, the impression given is that Eccleston wouldn’t be completely against a return for the 50th anniversary. This means that all surviving actors whom have previously played the part would potentially be game for a reunion to celebrate the show’s milestone.

Would you like to see Eccleston come back, or is Doctor Who better off without him?

Im thinking miniseries about the timewar, first few episodes with Paul McGann then a regeneration. Then Christopher can have a few episodes.

  • Grace

YES YES YES YES YES YES!!! He’s my absolute favorite!!!!!

  • Mdrich12

If he came back, it should just be for a short time, like an episode or two.  Of the three doctors of the reboot, he’s my least favorite.  I’m just not a fan of him, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him in a couple episodes.

He did a great job but unfortunately, of the three, one of them has to be my bottom pick and Eccleston was it. He got amazing stories and handled them well, he’s a fantastic actor but he just didn’t have the quirkiness David and Matt do – plus his Doctor had so much anger since he just came off the time war which put me off slightly. By the time his 10th and 11th incarnations rolled around the Doctor was learning to live with what happened and wasn’t quite so externally angry. I loved Matt because he bodies the ‘old man with a young soul’ personality of the Doctor and David because he balanced quirky with guilt (“I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry”) the way Chris didn’t. Each of them were amazing in their one way though, their the reason Doctor Who got back on its feet again, and in a BIG way. Oops sorry. I rambled, feel free to ignore me.

It always amazed me how powerful it was when David said, “I’m so sorry” because it always worked so well, and then you thought about it for a second, and you’re like, he just said it in a normal voice and it was still heartfelt and full.

        • Oscar

I always hated him saying “I’m so sorry”, funnily enough because I thought it always sounded very weak and empty.

I’m getting more and more excited for the anniversary next year!
If David and Christopher returned it would make sense from a story perspective, the actors still look like their Doctors.
I’m still wondering how the older Doctors would be portrayed, if they decided to return next year. It worked with Tennant and Davidson because it was just a fun little charity “skit”, but a whole canon episode would be more difficult.

Good boy Eccleston :) be a good sport

I am over the moon at this news!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kyle

The quote just sounds like he’s saying he wished he stayed on a little longer, not like he would like to return.  Coming back for one episode would do little to ‘get under the skin’ of the character.

I’m not getting too overly excited about his comments because they’re pretty vague, but Matt Smith implied in an interview recently that the 50th anniversary won’t just be one episode, it’ll be multiple ones or specials.

I adored him in the first season! Would love to see him return.

  • Nikki

He has to come back. He is the reason I fell in love with the show. I loved him. I loved his sarcasm. I loved how he was only really soft towards Rose. I need him back.

Exactly. My other Whovian friends don’t understand why Nine is MY Doctor.

Fantastic. Eyes scrunched up now in a wish for a McGann-Eccleston-Tennant-Smith multi-Doctor storyline…

Wow this is really surprising. I wasn’t holding my breath for his return for the 50th but now it’s a possibility. I wonder what brought about the change.

  • Michael

Yessss! it would be amazing to see him back, idk how the storyline would all work out, but yes please come back for a few more series!!!

  • Brie

Absolutely, YES YES YES! I loved him as The Doctor!! I mean, Ten is probably my favorite, but I love Nine too, and like he said, he didn’t really get that much time to get into the role. He had so much potential. I really hope this happens!

  • April Yee

What an emotional roller coaster! First Eccleston is adamantly against it, now he’s changing his mind? Can’t said I’m complaining but I wish he’d just say YES or NO to returning to Doctor Who. #ComeBackNinthDoctor

  • natchiketa

Oh my God of course yes please throw my “YES” in with the other million million ones!

  • http://www.danaseilhan.com Dana Seilhan

    FANTASTIC!!!!!  YES!  Come back, Nine!

  • Guest

Eccleston is “my” Doctor and I hope he comes back! Billie Piper’s return at the same time would just about make my year–I adored the two of them together.

I think he was the best Dr. Who. He was so cute and charming. I wouldn’t mind him coming back. He was great in the role.

  • Amber

Fantastic!! I would absolutely love to see him come back, even if it was just for one episode.

  • Kraahkan

I would love for him to come back, if only for an episode. [=

  • Haogar5

OF COURSE i would like to see him come back, if Matt and David are on the special Chris is a must!, of course this opinion of mine trasends to Paul and Sylvester, which i think is the only one from the classic series who still somewhat still could pull the role with a little makeup, but my only worry was, and now less but still a little, Christopher Eccleston

I’d rather see Carol Ann Ford than any of the previous Doctors. Having 8 Doctors running around would threaten to turn it into more of a series of mugging cameos than an actual story.

  • Catie

i would give anything to have him come back… he is so amazing and i know things didn’t end well but i want him to come back just one more time, he didn’t go on long enough

  • steve

I like his role as the doctor it would be really cool to see him back as the doctor with all the other doctor’s for the 50th anniversary
