Sadly, fans have not seen the last of departures from Grey’s Anatomy. Today Eric Dane announced that he will be exiting the series.

TV Line reports that Dane’s character, Dr. Mark Sloan, who was badly injured in the season 8 finale will survive the crash and return to Seattle Grace Hospital for a few more episodes before making an exit. His character is likely to be hugely affected by the death of Lexie Grey and may be used as the reason for leaving. Both Dane and show creator Shonda Rhimes released statements on the actor’s decision to leave the show.

“I am extremely grateful to everyone at Grey’s, ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run,” Dane tells TVLine exclusively. “It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes.”

Rhimes called McSteamy “one of the most beloved characters on Grey’s Anatomy.” She added that Dane “did not come to this decision lightly, but after much consideration and conversations, he and I have decided that this is the right time for his storyline to end.

How do you think the show should handle Dane’s exit?

I’m sort of happy. I love the character Mark and Eric as an actor, but I don’t want to spend the next two seasons watching him be miserable over Lexie’s death. It’s sad that Mark will be leaving his daughter, but maybe the story line they come up with will make more since on that front. At least he doesn’t die… that would have been too predictable. I was wondering if some characters were going to come back just for a few episodes, so its nice to know we have a few more episodes with him.

I would have preferred that they kill off Mark and phase out Lexie after a few eps. She was the best character ever (sob)

That wouldn’t have affected Meredith as much though. I think it’s supposed to be that Meredith has no family left in Seattle. I’m curious to see whether they’ll bring up her other half sister into the show.

She just needs to get TF out of that hospital. More people have died there since her arrival than I can count.

So since the actors who play Christina, Meredith and Derek all signed extended contracts…. and they said that another character would be dying in the series premiere- does that mean Arizona is dead?

    • Gary65

      Is the pilot dead yet?

Well, considering I didn’t think he was gonna survive this year’s premiere, he will be around longer than I thought. I’m glad he will get a little to time to resolve his character’s story right. I hope to see some good scenes between him & Avery, as they have quickly become my favorite bromance.

Does nobody find it at all strange that Shonda basically released the exact same statement for Chyler and for Eric? That’s really strange to me, and makes me feel like something else may actually be happening.

Ugh, this is depressing news… why?? :(

  • akacj7

well, to be honest, i don’t care so much about mark w/o lexie, so i’m not totally torn up about it, but he HAS been a good character so i’m sad to see him go. he is also father to sophia so that’s too bad. =( hopefully he’ll go out classily and believably.

If Arizona leaves somehow, that would be a great opening for the return of the never dead George, to console and love baby Sophia and his mother can keep knitting the baby clothes.
