Fresh reports have come in which allege Mark Gatiss, co-creator of Sherlock and frequent Doctor Who writer is penning a script which will see the return of a fan favourite Classic Who monster – but which one is it?
Once again, we re-iterate that this is a rumour unearthed by British tabloid The Daily Star – so don’t take the news as gospel. The newspaper claims that a Doctor Who source has revealed Gatiss will be bringing back The Ice Warriors for his 2013 script, an episode that will be one of the first adventures that new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman partakes in.
“‘Who’ fans have been crying out for the return of the Ice Warriors,” the Star’s source told them. “Now they’ve got their wish. It’s going to be an exciting year with the 50th anniversary celebrations.” While we are naturally suspicious of the credibility of this “source,” the claims do ring true with rumours and reports that have been whirring around for a few months, so we wouldn’t be too surprised if the Ice Warriors’ return did indeed come to fruition.
The Ice Warriors were reptilian humanoid aliens similar to the Silurians, and appeared in six serials of the show before its original cancellation. Hailing from Mars, the creatures are aggressive soldiers with sonic weapons and an unsurprising knack for thriving in freezing temperatures.
The last time they were seen on screen, they were thwarted by The Third Doctor but have subsequently made numerous appearances in audio plays and spin-off novels. Although they haven’t appeared in the show since its revival, they have been alluded to twice in The Christmas Invasion and The Waters of Mars.
