‘Once Upon a Time’ producer Jane Espenson talks season 2 time jump, ‘The Little Mermaid’

Once Upon a Time producer Jane Espenson has dropped some spoilers about the beginning of season 2 and what fairytale characters they’re thinking about introducing.

Speaking to TV Line, Espenson reveals:

We’re picking up right where we left off, but where we left off was in the middle of a veer in a different direction. Season 2 will be different than season 1.

She also talks about plans to bring in The Little Mermaid and other Disney princesses:

I would hope Ariel would join the show. She’s one we’ve definitely talked about. [And] there are a whole lot of princesses we haven’t seen — like Aurora, Rapunzel and Jasmine. And it’s hard to look at that list without going, ‘Well, what about Goldilocks?!’ And they’d all be good, because what we do is take them and go, ‘Well, the thing you never knew about Little Miss Muffet is…’

Interestingly, Ariel made our original fairytale character wishlist! Who would be on yours?

Ooooh yes, please! I love mermaids and I’d really like to see a “Once-upon-a-time-Ariel” :-)))

Ariel is at the top of my list.

I figured they would dip into the Goldilocks at some point,and since we already have it established that there IS an Agrabah (ala The Genie/Magic Mirror) I really want to see some Princess Jasmine action. The MAIN one I want to see is Rose Red…little known Sister to Snow White from another Grimm Bros tale. For reals that could shake things up.

  The Snow White in the story with Rose Red is a different character from the well-known Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Still, they could twist stuff up and it could be interesting.

I’m a MASSIVE mermaid fan. The Little Mermaid is my 2nd favorite Disney movie after Tangled. I can’t wait to see what they do with the stories. =)

I would love to see more classic characters portrayed by some ethnically diverse actors. While Ariel definitely calls to mind a redhead, the character Rapunzel has been re-imagined so many times, why not have her played by an actress of color?

the only things I’m praying for OUAT is for Aladdin to look Indian or Arab. Same for Jasmine.

and for future princesses to be more like Snow White or Belle in OUAT (aka both sweet and badass ) and less than Cindy. (i love cindy but they made her so weak and just— there in the series)

I’d love to see Aurora on there since they’ve already introduced us to Maleficent who was such a great character!
