Bloomsbury says a ‘new Rowling three-book box set tied into the Potter series’ due in coming year

While discussing its profits and looking ahead, U.K. Harry Potter publisher Bloomsbury revealed a very interesting tidbit about a future Potter project.

UPDATE: Bloomsbury has now officially announced the box set – see all the details.

We noticed the following blurb in Reuters’ report on the earnings call:

Bloomsbury, the publisher of the “Harry Potter” series by author JK Rowling, also said it was counting on a new Rowling three-book box set tied into the Potter series, and a non-fiction account of spies in World War II to support sales in the coming year.

No other details were mentioned, but with J.K. Rowling recently confirming she’s actively working on a Harry Potter encyclopedia, our first guess would be that this project is what Bloomsbury is referring to.

Could the encyclopedia be split into three parts? This likely isn’t a re-release of the existing books, as there are only three in the box set.

Whatever it is, we can’t wait to learn more!

I’m hoping its not a rerelease of Qudditch Through the Ages, Fantastic Beasts and Beedle The Bard in a box set or something. Otherwise I’m very very excited!

    too soon? uh … she obviously had most of the content fleshed out in the decade or so she was writing the books and she stopped working on potter in late 2006 which was 6 years ago so I think 16 years is enough time to gather her thoughts into one book.
    
    that said I don’t think it is the encyclopedia because that sounds very goofy to split it up into 3 parts.

      I don’t know why that would sound goofy. Plenty of encyclopedia’s are more than one book. Plus that means we’ll have a lot to comb through! But I do (unfortunately) agree with Heather.

      See my comment below. It is not going to be the encyclopaedia. (The reason I said it was too soon is that she’s implied in the recent past that an encyclopaedia would be years away if it happened at all)

  Agreed… but I’m really afraid this is along the lines of what it will be since WB is doing the whole dvd box set thing Bloomsbury might be trying to capitalize on that release and try and get people to buy these companion books as a set. We’ll wait and see

    Yeah thats what I was thinking. Although it could be something like different books in the series (Hogwarts: A History, etc) that she could be releasing, or it could be an extended version of that prequel she wrote some years ago. Either way, I’m interested and really hoping it’s something exciting (like a prequel, or textbook type things), not something lame.

Is the non-fiction WWII book from JKR or is that just another book from someone else they’re counting on to boost profits? And I also hope its not a rerelease of Quidditch, Beasts, and Beedle.

    They’re just talking about what’s going to be released this year that
    will make the publisher money. The JKR box set and some other anticipated book from another author about WWII will bring in the bucks.

It will probably be a re-release of Quidditch Through The Ages, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and The Tales Of Beedle The Bard in one boxset…..although im sure they already did that??? But i cant see any other option because there is no way she could have written the encyclopedia already as she has been working on The Casual Vacancy..and i doubt shes written three new subsidiary books, but apart from a boxed re-reease that would be the most likely option- maybe 3 new ones from charity based off of ones from pottermore??

The encyclopedia would certainly not be here that soon (and it makes no sense about three parts…) Was it just in the US that she switched publishers? So in the UK she’s still with Bloomsbury?

  She never switched Harry Potter publishers – Scholastic’s still got everything Harry Potter in the US, Bloomsbury’s still got all things Potter in the UK – she’s only switching for the new book, which is being published by Little, Brown (UK sect) in the UK as well. :)

See, Heathers comment does make more sense. If it would be Quidditch Throughout the Ages, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Tales of Beedle The Bard,not everyone has these books yet. However, I don’t know how much they would help with sales. I do own Tales of Beedle the Bard, I used to own Quidditch Through the Ages but it didn’t do anything for me. So, I would not buy it.

Im agreeing with the idea of a re-release. Ive learnt not to get my hopes up when it comes to potter! Shes been busy with her new book too, so I doubt this will be three volumes of an encylopedia.

Personally, I’m hoping for Hogwarts, A History &/or The Life & Lies of Albus Dumbledore… I feel like she has already given us a lot from these books, so maybe she wouldn’t have to write too much more, but it would still be fun to read them in their entirety.

A Beedle/Quidditch/Fantastic Beasts box-set will be disappointing, also if it’s a PS/CoS/PoA box-set or something like that. How amazing would it be if it was new HP stories (marauders, founders etc)? Maybe the encyclopedia but considering what she just said (that there won’t be a published enclyopedia), that doesn’t seem likely. Hmmm….

    There are a hundred things that can be made considering Potter, but should they be made?… Don’t get me wrong, I love Potter, but I’m truly afraid that the big companies will want to do more and more stuff just to cash the extra buck.

        I’m sorry. I think I didn’t make myself clear. In my original post I was referring to the other news about the 3 book set that Blumsberry is announcing, not the Encyclopedia that she is saying isn’t gonna happen.
        
        To sum my thoughts – an Encyclopedia written by Jo would be great. Something else like Pottermore, or the lot of dvds / special dvd set / ultra special dvd set… not so much. Somethings seem to just explore the fandom, specially the movie related. Thank heaven that Jo still has the last word in book related stuff.

      Considering she gave her money away to charity, I don’t think a company is getting her to write more books. She’s writing because she loves it. I’m sure whatever she does will be amazing.

  That doesn’t really confirm anything… Isn’t that talking about e-books? I think they’re saying that they’re gonna release Quidditch and Beasts in the e-book format. I don’t think is connects with this. The box set is a NEW one and it’s got three books- the article here on hypable doesn’t say anything about e-books and the link you posted doesn’t specify anything about physical books or a 3 book box set. I’m not seeing the connection

To all those speculating, and getting their hopes up. There is virtually zero chance these are new books, much less new full novels. This is for several reasons.
1. That would be a huge announcement and a very big deal.
2. They would never ever release 3 new books at once in one set. That would not maximize prophets. Any new books will be sold and marketed individually and later collected into a set
3. She just said that she isn’t planning on releasing the encyclopedia any time soon.

You can be guaranteed that if she does indeed decide to write a continuation of the Potter story, be it about Harrys kids, the marauders, or anything else, it will be a huge announcement with a great deal of fanfare. So please please please lower your expectations and get ready for something probably mundane.

I have to agree with the guesses that it’ll probably be Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard packaged together. Otherwise, there probably would have been some big announcement about it, rather than just a short mention in an article about the publisher. Maybe the box set will be in e-book format or something? They’ve made lots of money on the e-books, so maybe they figure e-books of these titles will sell well also?

Also, remember that The Casual Vacancy is being released in September, and given what we’ve seen with so much time between JKR’s book releases, I think it’s unlikely it’ll be a new Harry Potter book.

At the very most, if it is a new book, I think it’ll be something similar to Fantastic Beasts, etc. and not a big novel. But then again, she’s putting up the material on Pottermore …

Fantastic Beasts, Quidditch, Beedle. Simply put them in a boxed set like what was done before with Fantastic Beasts and Quidditch. (all three are approximately the same size, at least in the Scholastic editions) But weren’t the proceeds from those going to charity? Is something going to change that? (How does that work? Is it that all the profit goes to charity or that a portion of the products go to charity?)

I really love her but I hate her so much right now. She has so much material to publish! Potions, spells, transfiguration, divination, hogwarts a history, history of magic, defense agains the dark arts, biographies of secondary characters, arithmancy, astronomy, herbology, charms, Apparition, muggle studies, Ancient runes, Alchemy, magic arts, Gringgots or the ministry of magic, hogsmeade, floo powder, LockhArt’s collection, magical nursery, special gifts and objects, Information about other wizarding schools…. I’m not asking for all of those, but she promised the encyclopedia years ago and now she won’t do it… Of course, pottermore is some sort of encyclopedia but it is not the same to have it on a book form… First generation fans will agree…. And she is also releasing a charms book but for play station!! Like.. Seriously? And I now it is impossible but I hope she could see this and see how dissapointed we are… Thanks, jo for everything but do not promise stuff you won’t publish.
