As if Thursday’s Grey’s Anatomy season finale didn’t already leave us rocking back and forth in the fetal position, creator Shonda Rhimes isn’t making any promises for season 9.

Rhimes spoke to E! Online about Lexie’s death and the future of our beloved doctors left in the woods after the plane crash.

“I hate to say this, but just because you saw people alive at the end of the finale doesn’t mean they’re going to be alive when the season starts up,” she told E!. “We are completely jumping off into the unknown next season.”

“It is very unsettling for me, and the idea of leaving my Meredith and my Cristina in the wilderness without a match, chewing half a stick of gum each, having each other, while beautiful, was really painful,” she added.

As for why Lexie, played by Chyler Leigh, had to die, Rhimes hinted that there was more to the decision to kill off a fan favorite.

“Stuff that happens inside our family is stuff that happens inside our family,” she said. “I have so much respect for Chyler, and the decision was really, it was very hard for everybody involved and I want to respect her privacy on that.”

From the sound of it, Rhimes hasn’t decided yet if someone else will die, but the idea isn’t off the table. Read the full interview over at E! Online.

Do you think we’ll lose another doctor to start season 9?

yes. i truly believe someone else will die. for one, and i absolutely hate this reason, but it would be a rating thing as usual. if they say someone else will die more people will watch (though i do not understand this logic AT ALL). my insides already died when Lexie died but a piece of me will forever be dead of Arizona dies. we already know that Mer, Der and Cristina arn’t going to die. Something bad could happen, but not death. Unless contracts mean crap in the sense that Shonda could still kill them off. I think that if Lexie is truely dead (get to this in a minute) then Mark needs to go too. I feel more of a connection between him and Lexie than i do between him and Sophia. Its sad, but true. Mark and Lexie need to live happily ever after in the only way possible now, Marks death. And the idea that he is so close to death now, it doesn’t look like he would even last another hour out there let alone till morning.
As for Lexie. A part of my brain and soul and heart is just way too hopeful. I think it would be the most epic of epic television twists out there if Lexie weren’t really dead, or if it were all a dream. To leave it in such a cliff hangar and then twist it like that next season, it would change the mind of every cynic out there right now. But i know that is highly unlikely, and now after reading this comment about respecting Chyler’s decision, i’m beginning to think Chyler had more of a hand in the decision than I originally thought (though just a couple of months ago when everyone’s contract was up in the air she said she wasn’t going anywhere and she would gladly take the spot to cover the name ‘grey’). I just feel like there are a lot of inconsistencies here… so either they are inconsistencies in opinions, decisions, story plot and writing or something bigger is going on. Am i just too hopeful?

As long as Christina and Meredith survive, I’m good.

I think they foreshadowed to Arizona dying when she spit up blood. We know from an earlier news story that the main characters all signed two year contracts, so they’re fine. So it’s really Arizona & Mark who are in trouble, though I feel like it would be poetic if Mark died.

An the fact that Torez was saying how her life was pretty sweet right now because she met Arizona?…I Think she might be in trouble,

i think it might be arizona bc callie was all “my life is great, im so happy” and bc of the message alex leaves her. it was all very final, ya know?…. it wont be christina, derek, or mer… or at least i hope not! i cant wait for the scene where everyone in seattle finds out the plane is missing or never arrived, or whatever. its gunna be good!

I hope its Mark that dies. I love love love him but I am sad for him now that Lexie is gone.

Did I read somewhere that Patrick Dempsey was leaving the show?

No. Mer, Der, and Christina all signed contracts. I think Arizona will die. And if that happens, I honestly might stop watching the show.

It’s been three days and I’m still so sad. Killing off my favorite character does not make me look hopeful for the next season. I was SO looking forward to Mark and Lexie getting back together. :(

Wouldn’t it be mean if Shonda teased us about another character dying, and it just turns out to be the pilot of the plane? :) Anyway, it’s either going to be Mark or Arizona, which losing either character would make me very sad.
