Not only is The Avengers doing wonders for Disney and future Marvel prospects, it’s also doing well for the middle-eastern food industry.

According to THR (via CBM), The Avengers is set to cross the $800 million dollar milestone today, the last official count being $775.4 million after the end of the day on Wednesday.

The film is expected to gross another $200 million ($100 million domestic, $100 million overseas) over this weekend, so it’s expected to cross $1 billion by the end of the weekend.

Who’s taking their mom to see Earth’s mightiest heroes this Sunday?

In other news, Robert Downey Jr. seems to have given shawarma the Tony Stark bump. Since sales of the food item have reportedly gone up since Iron Man’s joke about them shortly after the climax of the film. The after-credit scene then showed the full team chowing down on shawarma, no doubt leading movie-goers to wonder where their nearest Shawarma joint was.

From TMZ:

At Ro Ro’s Chicken — a famed Lebanese joint in Hollywood — the manager says shawarma sales jumped 80% in the days after the movie opened.

What do you think? Do you have a craving for Shawarma? This writer had the pleasure of visiting the actual location of the place they filmed the after-credits scene, (‘Elat Burger’, 9340 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90035) if you happen to live in the Los Angeles area, we recommend that you give it a try!

    im hitting up shawarma today.

  • Ziziberto

    This movie is so overrated.

    • guest

      shut up.
if you dont like it go to your little cynic corner and leave us who enjoyed it alone.

    • Greenballcrew

Have you watched it ? its pretty gooooooood

    • rdh014

I think the ticket sales/reviews/opening weekend numbers beg to differ.

Nothing like this has ever been done before. It is monumental in the movie-making industry. So no. It is not overrated. It was absolutely revolutionary, hilarious, though provoking, and overall just a great movie experience.

If you didn’t like it, that is your opinion. But it is in no way overrated.

      • http://twitter.com/eiVega eiVega

Ha, gee.  That guy can’t share his opinion without provoking anyone.  I liked the movie but I do think it’s overrated also.  It’s just another comic book movie.  There was nothing unique, monumental or revolutionary.  There have been more impressive films made.  Yes, it’s a fun ride but that doesn’t make it an extraordinary product.  I don’t think it deserves all the money its making.  Money only reveals popularity and not quality.  Part of it is inflation, 3D and IMAX bumping up there numbers.  Yeah, it’s a good movie but to make this much money is ridiculous.  People must not have much else to do.  It has a very broad appeal and that worked to its favor.  It’s making money because it’s a popular enough franchise to lure people and it’s decent quality to get them talking about it and coming back.  I just didn’t find it so super amazing and mind-blowing as people are suggesting.  I really think it’s just really entertaining because it’s a good script.  I appreciate the writing more than anything.  I doubt there’s anything super magnificent about the film that is catching the Academy members attention for Oscars.  Not that the Academy is the definitive position on filmmaking, but people need to wipe their fanboy glossy eyes and realize this is nothing more than just another fun popcorn flick.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

agree. 52% of the tickets were 3D tickets sold. Thats a high %

          • Isenhobbitz

If people were willing to fork over the extra money to see it in 3D, why should the film not get credit for that? Personally, I haven’t seen it in 3D yet, but am planning to go after hearing that the 3D was actually pretty good this time (I don’t usually enjoy it.) I don’t see how that should diminish the accomplishment. However, I do see the point about inflation overall. I wish we could know what the top grossing film counting inflation actually is.

        • CliveRogan

It’s not just another comic book movie though, it was the merging of four already established franchises and it managed to blend them without any one overshadowing the others.  It would have been amazing if the film was merely not bad, but the fact that it was good is astounding.

There are two types of films, mass market crowd pleasing films, and smaller, deeper films.  The first type makes the most money and the second type wins awards.  You can’t compare the two because there are different factors determining why the films are good.  The Avengers isn’t aiming to win awards, it just wants to be an entertaining couple of hours and that is what it does, and thus is why it is as popular as it is.

        • Isenhobbitz

I agree with you that it is not in the running for any oscars, but  that’s not the point. This movie is pure fun, plain and simple. Yes, it is another fun popcorn flick, but fun enough that people want to go see it again and again. Why doesn’t it deserve to make this much money if it is doing exactly what it’s meant to do? BE FUN.

Sidenote: Though I agree with your comment about inflation, if people are willing to fork over extra money for 3D and IMAX, why shouldn’t the film get credit for that? I know people who’ve gone out of their way to see it in those mediums after seeing it in 2D.

        • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

Do you also think Harry Potter was overrated? (I’m not provoking, I’m just curious).

        • rdh014

OK. Let’s think about this for a second:

*There is the “Marvel Comic Universe” i.e. a series of books about superheroes that are individual but also highly intertwined with one another.

*Now they have begun to make a “Marvel CINEMATIC Universe” i.e. a series of films about superheroes that are individual, but completely intertwined and complementary.

There has NEVER been anything like this. You could say something similar about things like Star Wars or Star Trek or HP, however these franchises focus on the same general main cast. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has created an entire WORLD within the movie medium, that focuses on several different characters (individually) within this “universe”. That, plus the fact that they stay so true to the stories already written is more that most films can say.

It is not just another comic book movie. It is literally the culmination of several different movies put together. That in itself is revolutionary, as nothing like it has been done before.

I love movies, and this to me is the purest of good film making, which is why people keep coming back for more. And I am happy to waste my time and money to see it. I think people are entitled to their opinion, but they fail to understand what this movie truly was.

  • Theaterboy1

I know I definitely wanna try Shawarma now!!! Hopefully I will get to soon!

  • Hehedied

I saw it a second time…. I didn’t in joy it as-much. It was rather boring the first hour or so. The premiere and all the screaming fans, made me laugh, and shout on the premiere. Seeing it a second time, you know all the funny one-liners and jokes to come. It was Amazing the first time, and just ok the second. I think it may hit 1.5billion by the end of its run.

    • Liderc

Agreed.  The premiere made it exciting, but seeing it again revealed that it’s lacking say, what Iron man 1 had, or Batman Begins in story line.

      • fcanaj

I thought it was better the second time around. picked up on all the little things!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

agree. it was a movie with great moments… thats all.

    • http://hystericalmarissa.blogspot.com MarissaAO

I’ve seen it four times, and I could still see it again. I appreciate the emotional core of the character arcs more and more with each viewing.

  • Guest02

      DISAGREE.

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

I feel like the best thing about this article is the shawarma sales :p But that’s really impressive. I cannot fathom how they expect another $100 mill…well then again I am seeing it again this weekend :p

    • Liderc

This is only the 2nd weekend lol, the word of mouth is going to make this weekend even stronger than normal 2nd weekends.

      • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

indeed, but how many films have made over 100 mill two weekends in a row?? I don’t think there are many.

  • nobody

Dude. Shawarma is the stuff, man!

  • Morsmordre79

This is is the second movie of the double feature next weekend at the drive-in near my house. The first movie is the Hunger Games. Best night ever? Yes, I think it will be. XD

    • http://www.facebook.com/Panhead1922 Ande Anderson

DUDE! That would be amazing! I’ve been wanting to go to a drive in for forever, and that would be the icing on the cake!

  • rdh014

Not gonna lie…I have never had shawarma…and now I really wanna try it.

  • http://twitter.com/coolstoryaniki Vivi

    Shawarma is DELICIOUS

  • http://twitter.com/eiVega eiVega

Cool, good to know which restaurants to check out.  I have a lot of Greek options nearby but that’s more technically Gyros and not shawarma.  I’ll have to visit these  other places soon.  The movie actually didn’t give me a craving, but more the news from TMZ about the sales.

  • 7Starrchasers

so in less that three weeks, a billion huh? do people still think beating avatar is a far fetched goal?

    • moonshoespotter1712

Avatar achieved that too, with barely a drop over the weeks, so it is mighty feat to beat it. A chance, but I don’t think so. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong though.

  • Azeem

To be honest, I don’t want the Avengers to get much more than 1 billion dollars, and I certainly don’t want it to beat HP7 Part 2 nor Titanic and definitely Avatar. I understand that people will hate me for this, but remember, it’s just my view. It’s not like I’m going to do everything I can to make sure it doesn’t happen, but I don’t want The Dark Knight Rises to be the second biggest film of the year. I want it to be THE film of the year.

    • CliveRogan

It doesn’t have to make the most money to be the best film of the year.  And rather than wanting The Avengers to make less money, you should just hope that The Dark Knight Rises makes more.  It would hardly be a victory to only make the most money through your competitors performing badly.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=673982809 Irfon Pennant Williams

With the Avengers and The Hobbit.  I can’t even see the dark knight rises even getting second.

  • Shantelle

Okay… WHAT THE CRAP IS SHWARMA? I mean seriously….
And that is awesome!! It was an amazing movie and I hope it does top Avatar, even if that means toping my beloved HP movie… It deserves it!!

  • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

    Goooo Avengers!! :D

  • FlamingC

PLEASE GOD LET THIS MOVIE BEAT AVATAR!!! And Yeah I might go down to LA over memorial day weekend and hopefully I’ll check the restaurant out!

    • Koone

I don’t think it will beat Avatar, because that grossed $50+ million for six consecutive weeks while Avengers is already 50% down this weekend compared to its opening weekend

  • Agent Coulson

Wait. You guys had Shawarma without me?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=730249892 Sara Naor

I’m DYING right now. The place I went to eat today is right by Elat Burger and I had no idea it was even famous…
