Up until now, all we have known about when to expect series 7 of Doctor Who is that it will be broadcast late this year. However, the line-up for this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival has been announced – and the inclusion of a preview screening for episode one gives us clues as to when the TARDIS will be back on screens.

The first episode (the name of which has not yet been revealed), will premiere between August 23 and 25 as part of the festival’s events. Showrunner Steven Moffat and actor/writer Mark Gatiss will attend the screening and also answer fan questions.

So, what does this tell us about the long awaited air-date? Doctor Who has a history of screening episodes at similar events, and The Moff’s Sherlock also receives regular previews. These past events have typically occurred around four weeks before broadcast, so we imagine that “every Dalek ever” will be exterminating our television sets somewhere in late September.

We would like to stress that this is in no way confirmed, and is merely an educated guess based on past evidence. However, we’re fairly confident in our estimate.

If you would like to buy tickets to the Edinburgh TV Festival, you can do so here.

What do you think about a potential September start date?

Id rather it start earlier than that

        6, but still.

        • Just4myx

the 6th is the xmas ep in which the new companion will be introduced

In the past, an episode has premiered approx. a week prior to official Broadcast, so this could be September Week 1/Week 2

I was expecting a November start date with there only being 5 eps this year, the last being on Christmas, I kinda just worked backwrds from their. If they start in Sept thats going to spread the eps out too much, esp if they have any heavy cliff hangers in any ep

  • http://twitter.com/MowTheFrontLawn Juan Pedia

I was expecting mid-November, considering that 6 episodes of Season 7 will be broadcast before next year.

  • Bassett_sean

I’m sure I read somewhere that Steven Moffat had sad it would start in November and continue into 2013(6 episodes in 2012 and 8 in 2013)

  • Just4myx

As there is information elsewhere stating it will be 5 episodes, Christmas Ep, and then 8 episodes from around easter i expect the series will air in september/october to give a short break before xmas

  • Bluescott

i have heard that all the daleks ever made are in the veryu first episode as guard daleks and attack daleks and the weeping angels are back and as deadly as ever

  • Bluescott

plus we get to see more of rivers background

  • Bluescott

and u are all wrong it is the 23-25 august and it is 6 episodes-chrimbo ep- and 7 episodes

  • Crutchley

You have to remember that there will be 13 episodes of Merlin to fit in from Autumn 2012, so Doctor Who may run for 6 episodes from the end of August, or thats the time when Merlin will be back on with DW slipping in just before the chrismas day episode. Personnally I think it’s the former.

  • airbornekilo

merlin is assume to but if i get to pick i pick the doctor but im good with kick one of the times back so we can have them back to back ill bring the popcorn but it might be a little cold if i make it here in Florida.

  • Toniherring

All I have to say is I am deeply missing my Doctor fix and hope to see new epis soon. I been a fan since I was about 6 and will be 50 next month.

      • Alexa

You meant to reply to James Onions, I think.

  • James Onions

im only 19, and i habe seen EVERY doctor who epesoide ever made, but i need it to come back

  • monika

From the Merlin Wikipedia page: ‘The fifth series of the show is currently planned to air on Saturday, September 29 2012, a week after Doctor Who concludes the first batch of episodes from its seventh series.’
Judging from that, I’d say the air date is sometime during the end of August, as guessed in the article here. (one DW episode a week, 6 ep. = approx. a month and a half runtime for the first half. therefore in order for it to be done by Sept. 22, it has to air in Aug.)

Just worked it ou if that is correct and not trying to mislead us then Doctor who should start airing on the 18th of next month (August) EXCITED!!!!!
