It’s not much of a surprise, but Fox has chosen to cancel J.J. Abrams’ freshman series, Alcatraz, which suffered in its premiere season from low ratings and mediocre reviews.

Deadline broke the cancelation, along with the news that Fox’s other new drama, Touch, was renewed for a second season, and The Finder is still on the bubble, although its chances aren’t looking good. [Update: Early May 10, TVGuide reported that The Finder was also officially canceled.] Deadline reported:

Alcatraz is out of the picture, especially after Fox renewed J.J. Abrams’ other bubble drama series, Fringe.

Most critics wrote Alcatraz off as canceled long ago, around the time that Fox started doubling-up on episodes to end the season sooner. Even fans had accepted the fate of the mystery drama, co-starring Sarah Jones, Jorge Garcia and Sam Neill, although a few were still holding on to a last shred of hope.

What do you think of the news? Are you surprised? Glad? Horrified?

I enjoyed the show. It combined history with mystery. I will miss the show, but maybe there will be better things out there.

  • Jnthn44

I could only follow Alcatraz for the first 4 episodes before I totally lost interest… happy for Touch though!

      same here

I really enjoyed Alcatraz. I was hoping for a renewal but I didn’t have high hopes after I looked up its chances online.
It was a really interesting show, I’ll be sad to see it go.

Meh. Alcatraz started out great, but became way too repetitive and just couldn’t hold onto that sense of intrigue, mystery, engagement. Really glad Touch got renewed, though! Love that show.

  • belac889

I couldn’t watch Alkatraz because I was to tired by then and touch bored me very quickly.

  • 7Starrchasers

this is so sad..I loved the show…but atleast Touch is renewed!

I was hoping Terra Nova would get a 2nd season, they broke my heart months ago =P

Alcatraz had like less than half the #’s that TN had, so it was doomed from the get go.

Kinda bummed, but it’s really ok.

  • FlamingC

lol i saw the filming of the last episode. Never really saw it on tv, just the ads. I prefer to watch comedy shows.

I’m a little disappointed by Alcatraz and The Finder’s cancellations, but not overly surprised by either. I enjoyed both of them, but they weren’t super great.

Touch I really didn’t care if it was renewed or cancelled. I’ve recorded all the episodes of it since January, but I have yet to watch a single one. Every time I think about watching it I just find something else to watch instead. It just doesn’t seem that appealing as much as I like Kiefer Sutherland.

    • 7Starrchasers

trust me..just watch it….its so well written and acted!

i enjoy Touch, but why does keifer sutherlund always sound like he’s out of breath! it annoys me so much!! every sentence has this gruff, heave breathing sound! lol… was he like that on 24?

  • Greenballcrew

J J abrams needs to stop attaching him self to so much!

  • akacj7

i liked the alcatraz team, i’m bummed to see them go, but i’m not surprised. and we still have fringe so my life will have meaning for at least the next year.

  • HotelCesarKrogstad

they renewed fringe and canceled alcatraz, just shows how screwed up tv is now days…

    • CliveRogan

Fringe is awesome, Alcatraz is/was shockingly poor (or it was for the first 5 or six episodes, afterwhich I gave up on it).

I do think TV, Fox especially, cancels shows too soon, but atleast they gave Fringe the time to wrap up the story rather than been mercilessly cut short.

I guess I’m one of the few who actually enjoyed Alcatraz! I wish they were given one finale season to have a proper ending…now I’m left with questions as to how everything happened.

  • Gary65

    Finder’s gone, according to TV.com

bleck, cancel them both. what terrible shows. I can’t even sit through touch. BRING BACK FIREFLY.

  • Icebender77

I don’t know what it is with Fox and canceling good shows that could make the network better. Alcatraz was a good show that started off slow but finished off stronger than it came in. It’s seems that Fox just not to liking of JJ Abrams’. But Fox has always been allergic to having great tv shows.

  • Lucia

I quite liked Alcatraz despite it being so formulaic and repetitive. I really couldn’t get into Touch though, so I’m a bit surprised it was renewed, but obviously it’s ratings are doing well enough to keep it on.

  • Erikd16

I’m probably the only one on here who feels this way but alkatraz was way too dark for me to get into. When that guy described in horrible detail how he killed his kid brother I quit. Other than that kind of stuff i thought it was decent. I haven’t watched touch yet but now that I know it was picked up for a 2nd season I’m thinking I may check it out.
