Speaking with The Bookseller, Pottermore CEO Charlie Redmayne has updated everyone on the status of the Chamber of Secrets release and provided the latest e-book numbers, amongst other details.

We had first learned that Pottermore’s Chamber of Secrets area was “weeks away” on April 24 after Redmayne spoke at an expo. He offered the same “weeks away” timeframe in this new interview.

Pottermore’s e-book sales have now totaled over £3 million – in the first three days alone it made £1 million. He went on to say:

“Over the past two weeks we’ve seen sales settle down, but they remain very significant, and way beyond what we originally budgeted for.” He added that sales of the physical copies of the seven titles had also increased, and that because of the site’s light-touch Digital Rights Management, piracy had diminished.

“Obviously there were fears piracy would increase as a result of being DRM-free, and that sales of the e-books would cannibalise sales of the physical titles, but we were delighted to see sales of the physical books go up, and piracy come down.”

And finally, some stats:

Pottermore, the Harry Potter experience, has seen 22m visits from 7m unique users in its first two weeks, generating more than 1bn page impressions, with the average user visiting 47 pages, spending 25 minutes on the site.

Redmayne said there had been 4.2m attempts to make potions, with a success rate of just 32%. In those first two weeks there had been 39.9m “wizard duels” with the “full body bind” spell the most popular, and “pimple jinx” the least used. He said that after two weeks 5m new users had registered, with perhaps half of those already sorted into houses, such as Gryffindor and Ravenclaw.

Are you excited for Chamber of Secrets? Thanks to The Bookseller.

I never enjoyed PotterMore much but now that I am rereading the series, I find myself going back and revisiting the moments as I read.  It’s a different experience and really does take you back to when you first fell in love with the series.

  • Plat

Wait so when is it releasing? You never really said. Excited to hear these great stats tho. And yea DreamNox, Pottermore is a great companion to the books! I think it might even say that somewhere on the Pottermore site. I love reading a chapter in the book amd then going to experience it on the site.

“Weeks away” a couple of weeks back, and now “weeks away” again. It’s like saying “five more minutes”, after every five minutes. Then again, the public launch itself was delayed by SIX MONTHS. So, this is nothing new. Therefore, according to me, “weeks away” should be taken with a pinch of salt. The problem is that Hypable takes Charlie Redmayne’s words too seriously.

Where is your faith, dear Guest! Weeks away is notably better than months away. :)

      • PotionWillow207

Except that Pottermore’s past record shows that weeks usually does turn into months.

In terms of delays, Pottermore has had a couple.  But I trust that CEO SURELY he isn’t saying “a few weeks” unless he means it.. after all that has happened.

      • Effie lova

Andrew I understand what your saying but I would like to point out that it is possible that Secrets will not come out till June after the “School year” is over because it started in September so its highly likely that “a few weeks” means June.

        • Marie

But 1 book per year was never the plan, Chamber of Secrets was meant to be released February – 4 months after Pottermore was originally supposed to open to the public. Note that not even the  Harry Potter books themselves were released in Septembers. If it was 1 book per year and we wouldn’t get Deathly Hallows until around 2018, that would be ridiculous – Pottermore isn’t like the books and the fandom; as seen in the past 8 months, it can only grab our attention for so long until we lose interest and log on once every six months. Granted, the aim of it was to promote the eBooks and a sort of gift from Jo for our devotion, but it being a gift – as the Shop’s already opened and the money aspect of this has been put aside – 1 book per year would just be pure deprivation. Props to you if you end up being correct, but I highly doubt the guys over at Pottermore and J.K. Rowling herself would make us wait another six years to finally have all of Jo’s notes about a series she knows we live for.

I understand you and agree, except I remember reading somewhere that book two would be out sometime this Summer. I just re-played Potter more and it is way more fun than before! So I have no doubt that book two will be awesome and that book three could take a few months.

  • Lando Pando

Translate “a few weeks” to “many, many months”.
Pottermore is predictable in this aspect.

It’s nearly turning into valve time

Where does it say anything about CoS in the quote?

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Andrew Sims

      It’s in the article itself.

“4.2m attempts to make potions, with a success rate of just 32%.”Have they considered fixing the glitches?

    • Marly

The potions are supposed to be difficult, and there haven’t been nearly as many glitches lately!

I still don’t understand their direction with this. I grew up with Potter and love the series still but I am 27 years old, I work full time and have kids of my own to raise. I want all the information on Pottermore just as much as others but I don’t have the time to spend on it. Mostly all I’ve done is gotten sorted (Hufflepuff pride there). After that I spent some time during Beta testing but when I had the time nothing was working.

    • Jay

I agree.  I don’t have kids but I work full time, staring at a computer screen all day, and I’m not interested in spending all my free time glued to a website. I joined Pottermore specifically for the extra content, and haven’t really been back since I finished Book 1.  Pottermore is great, don’t get me wrong, but I’ll be much more excited to get the encyclopedia whenever it comes out.

    • SD

obviously it’s not for you than.

  • Plat

Lol why are people always so negative when they give us a time frame? Don’t let a late Public Launch ruin your first impressions… It seems like many of you have not been in a Beta before. They are meant to be iffy, buggy, and sometimes take longer than expected. But now it is up and running for the public, and now that all of the background stuff is set up, Im sure they’re working hard to get up COS asap. Especially if the CEO is sure enough to say it in 2 interviews.

    • PotionWillow207

What does the beta testing have to do with anything? It’s not beta anymore. And they told everyone that there was going to be an October 2011 public launch date…until a week or so before then when they said it would be in beta testing indefinitely. So don’t be surprised that we’re all skeptical about getting Chamber of Secrets in a few weeks.

      • Plat

Yea exactly, its not Beta anymore, thats what I mean, so there is no reason why we shouldn’t be able to depend on them now. But that date in October WAS during beta, and since they were having issues, they had to push the date back. Thats part of what happens when a program isnt complete yet. Issues come up. But they fixed them and its over with. So I dont understand why people are still complaining that everything else new that comes will be late or wont happen.

        • PotionWillow207

          Past experience with them.

        • Patrickgreen17

I agree they were only late with beta and they finally promised to make Pottermore public in early April and and were as late early as possible (April 14). Chamber of Secrets was promised to be released early 2012 so June 30 at the latest but I’m thinking it will be released later this month.

  • HarryHungerAvatar12

Can’t wait for the Chamber of Secret’s!!! CEO said that there please of some of the pages they seen and COS will come ASAP. Can’t wait for Chamber of Secret’s!!!

  • PotionWillow207

The low success rate of potions tells me that something needs to be changed or adjusted there.

    • Plat

Yep!  I wonder if it could also be certain people’s browsers? Ive been successful in all of my potions, but I use Chrome.

I enjoyed reading all those states in the last paragraph :)
