Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty may get the majority of scenes and musical numbers on Smash, but NBC is only submitting Debra Messing’s name for Emmy consideration in the lead drama actress category. Hilty and McPhee’s names will go in for supporting actress consideration.

The Hollywood Reporter learned of the decision from a Smash representative, adding that the rest of the cast will compete in supporting categories.

Does Smash deserve an Emmy? In what categories do you think they stand a chance?

Even though technically Kat and Megan are higher up on the totem pole in terms of being the leads, in a way I’m not surprised by this. It reminds me of the Oscars when Jennifer Hudson was submitted for Supporting Actress even though she was the lead in Dreamgirls. (And they put Beyonce in the Leading Actress category because she’s the bigger star in real life.) And I see that happening here: Debra Messing is a bigger celebrity than the other two, so that’s why they did it. And not only that, but it’s also done for the best way to get a win. Jennifer Hudson might not’ve won in the main category. And someone like Megan Hilty might have a better shot in the supporting one.

i also think it might be because Messing had the more emotional scenes this season. Im totally excited for Hilty as well!

Smash totally deserves an emmy! Fantastic show! I would love it if Debra Messing won lead actress and Katherine and Megan were both nominated with Megan winning.

Not really surprising.  She was the first one cast and it was always sold to the public as a debra messing vehicle.  i would guess that her being the lead is probably somewhere in her contract.

I can see why! She got the more emotion packed scenes..
