After thinking about this for a few days, I thought of how awesome it would be if Darren Criss took over Justin Timberlake’s crown of King of Dance. Here are 5 reasons this would work.
I have a feeling that people will either love or hate this idea. So, either way, I respect your opinion. I know that Darren Criss is not a huge fan of dance/electronica and has not put out any music (yet) that would fall into this genre. However, after listening to Glee‘s First Listen Friday this week, and his version of Whitney Houston’s “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay,” I can’t help but wonder: where has this been the whole time?
So far in the two seasons of Glee that Darren has appeared on it has been new arrangements of pop hits, some West Side Story songs, and a mesmerizing cover of Young The Giant that left fans weeping during the episode. Now that we know his solo album is getting more and more hype, why not go for a dance/electronic sound!?
What makes a banging club hit? When the singer has the pipes! It’s not always about the beat of the song when it comes to having a huge dance hit. Beyonce, Gaga and Rihanna all have the voice to back up their larger-than-life songs and have had huge dance hits in the last decade. Darren’s got that unique voice that could marry vocals with a dance beat that will have everyone freaking out when it starts to play!
Take a look at the Billboard Dance chart at any given time and you’ll see that it is full of female superstars. 2011, as I wrote, was the year of the female pop star. While we all love our Beyonces, our Gagas and our Britneys, it’s time for a leading man to take the stage! We need a male voice of our generation when it comes to pop/dance music, and Darren may already be on his way!
Darren, at heart, is a live performer. He loves to sing and have his instruments right in front of him. I get that. I also know he’s not a huge dancer, but after the disco-themed episode of Glee last week, we can see that he can at least hold his own! That may be comfortable, but as a performer, he’s probably looking to push himself right? Put down the guitar, get your flashy suits out, and show the world that you are more than an indie-guitar nerd! People would eat that up!
Here’s what we know about Darren Criss. One, he’s a self-proclaimed nerd. Two, he’s an amazing singer. Three, he’s a fantastic instrumentalist. Four, he can sing/perform almost any genre of music, make it his own, and release it as a huge hit, as seen on Glee. Let’s step outside of this coffee-shop-guitar-and-messy-hair look and give the world something completely unexpected: a flashy dance record that we can all scream, “Oh my God I can’t believe he’s doing this and it’s this amazing!”
There’s one thing that’s certain. The high-pitched squeals at the television sets aren’t always from girls. If there’s one thing gay men love it’s Darren Criss. Not just for his looks, but for his advocacy and devotion to gay rights. If there’s another thing gay men love, it’s a hot dance record. Why not combine these two things into one super-amazing-rainbow-and-glitter-covered record that will have everyone thanking the powers that be for answering their prayers?! Look what happened when Gaga released “Born This Way”!
Maybe if we can’t get a full album of dance hits from Darren, could we at least get a song or two? Is that too much to ask?
What are your thoughts? Should Darren stick to his guitar and piano mold, or should he step outside of the box and do something more exciting and mainstream? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below or on my personal Twitter @jthrasher!
