The title for J.K. Rowling’s new book has been unveiled.

It is called: The Casual Vacancy.

A synopsis of the book from Little, Brown follows:

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.

UPDATE: The book is approximately 480 pages.

A release date of September 27, 2012 was also set.

Hypable will have complete coverage of The Casual Vacancy as we approach its release!

Its so different than Harry Potter yet still very much her style from Harry Potter that I can’t help but be excited.

  • Ailsa

oooooooooohhhhhhhh! I think it sounds intriguing! Kind of makes up of the ever extending wait to get into Pottermore, ‘early April’ pah! They probably mean April 2013 I would not be surprised.

    From Harry to Barry?

  • http://twitter.com/JeffreyWest Jeffrey West

This is completely different from what I was expecting. She had said before that it was very different, but only now am I seeing she was telling the truth. I can’t help but want some sort of magical element, like Neverwhere. But I trust Jo and the way she can tell a story never ceases to amaze me, so I will say that I am interested in seeing how I will like this political drama.

Sounds interesting, looks like this is the ‘Political Fairytale’. Can’t wait!

I’ll read anything by JK but seriously. Was that the only name she could come up with?
Goes from a boy named Harry to a man named Barry.

    • Daughter of Eve

i didn’t even notice the Harry/Barry rhyme because I wasn’t looking to compare this with Harry Potter.

I love the Britishness of the plot.

It’s not something I’d pick up at a book store.
But this isn’t just any author…

So I have high hopes I’ll like this book.
I just hope its a success with people that don’t care about political anything and think the world revolves around kittens and unicorns.

As in ” wut? POLITICS!? Omg, well I hope there is at least some elfs, dragons and talking sandwiches. That would be so awesome!!!11118903456″

waiting for this new book but HARRY POTTER was awsum!! super excited for this book.

  • Akankshasingh3682

    wow excitd !

  • Oscar

Actually, my first thought was “sounds like Hot Fuzz”. I dunno if I’ll read it or not… I mean… it’s J.K.Rowling. Then again, I’ve never read ALL the books of my favourite authors, so I guess it doesn’t matter.

    • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.pittore Anthony Pittore III

      I can see that.

    • Daughter of Eve

That’s what I thought too: Hot Fuzz. But I love black comedies and loved Hot Fuzz so I excited about the new book.

  • http://twitter.com/emilyecstasyTM Emily Bryan

I’m so excited! This is actually something new to me, the genre. I never read things like that, but I think Jo will be introducing me to such things through this :]

  • https://twitter.com/#!/HP4eva121995 Ally

Even if it was called Lairs of Lady Po I’d be totally excited!

  • Hermione Granger

It’s really hard to judge a book by its synopsis. I mean, if you read the back of all the HP books it makes them sound ridiculously stupid, so I’ll reserve my judgment until there’s excerpts available or something.

  • goldensnidget

Wowww, this sounds slightly Agatha Christie… which makes me happy. I love reading about places that aren’t quite as they seem, so this sounds like it’s going to be TOTALLY AWESOME. :)

  • grapes9h5

wow cant believe this is real

  • Ian Miller

does anyone else think this sounds like an amazing book?!  i really can’t wait for september 27′th!  for the midnight release, i’m dressing up as barry :P

    • Patrick Star

…you don’t even know what he looks like.

      • caledon

Ehh, dead parish counsel member? Safe enough to dress as a zombie in a nice suit. XD

        • caledon

*council. But maybe he was a lawyer too. Same diff. Still go with the suit and the lust for brains…

      • Ian Miller

yeah, man that was the point!  haha.  i was just joking….

  • Zack

SOUNDS AMAZING! Midnight release, here I come!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

      YES YES

  • Kerri Sullivan

NOT her first novel for adults. Just sayin’.

    • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.pittore Anthony Pittore III

      It absolutely is.

      • Patcher24

Anthony you probably read Stephen King or John Grisham if you read at all….cause most who read can see that Harry Potter isn’t just a children’s book

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002112970145 Ainsley Pullen

did you just use “reading Stephen King” as an insult. He’s popular sure but he’s a good writer

        • Two

It may not be a children’s book, but I think I’d definitely classify it as Young Adult literature. I love the books more than anything, but the target audience was definitely from 10-18 or so. (Not that that excludes other readers)

          • http://twitter.com/Andrew_ww Andrew W

Deathly Hallows is not for 10 year olds. Not even close. The target audience for JK Rowling is herself as she has said many times. She wrote what she would want to read.

          • katnissfan

I know many people, including myself, that read Deathly Hallows at age 10 or younger. My brother was only 7 when he read it!

          • http://twitter.com/Andrew_ww Andrew W

It doesn’t make it for that age group. I’m sure people of all ages will read he new book because she wrote it even if it is labled as “for adults”.

          • runa

YA Lit (and, now that I think of it, other age classifications) are generally categorized as such because they feature teenaged protagonists.  This has shifted to being seen as a target reader demographic, but that’s a silly idea, as everyone should be free to read from a selection of all kinds of books.

  • http://twitter.com/BrittanyLeSue Brittany LeSueur

I am so excited!!!! p.s. there are a lot of better pictures of her..

  • Sarah Badger

I’m betting that Jo chose “Barry” after Barry Cunningham, her friend publisher at Bloomsbury. Or opening the story with a dead character named “Barry” is supposed to serve as a gentle reminder that there will be no more Harry. Ha.

  • Jason

    It’s like CHRISTMAS.

  • http://twitter.com/Andrew_ww Andrew W

Not something I would normally read but…ITS A NEW JK ROWLING BOOK!!! AHH

  • GoodFinder

Why is it coming out on a Thursday? If they do release parties, that’s going to be on a Wednesday night.

  • Rumana

  • Katie M

What with my imminent graduation and no job prospects, this has pretty much given me a reason to live.

  • upper_westsider

  • Choco-chan

It sounds very mature, that’s for sure. I’m kinda wavering whether I’d like to put this on my wishlist just yet, but I’m gonna keep an eye on this. I’m very happy JKR’s publishing something new either way. XD

  • FlightStorm

Anybody else read Pagford as Pigfart by accident the first time? Oh AVPM what have you done to me? :P

  • http://twitter.com/SorchaODowd Sorcha O’Dowd

Awesome! Sounds like just my sort of book and I LOVE Jo’s writing style so this should be an excellent read!

  • Silverfirelizard16

sounds like a Jodi Picoult kind of deal…hope it is, because then I’ll totally eat that up

  • KristenKranz

This sounds really interesting… Can’t wait for September!!

  • Lol

    Barry sounds like Harry O.o

  • SpartanTenor

Majorly excited, she’s going to do awesome things writing a mystery!  Midnight release party, anyone?

  • Phoebe

I particularly like the phrase “blackly comic”. Sounds a bit like some of the trio’s quips in tense situations extrapolated to more of the novel. So pumped!

  • http://twitter.com/eiVega eiVega

What a great morning surprise.  It definitely feels very adult.  I’d go to a midnight for this.  I can’t believe we got the title, synopsis and release all in one announcement it.  I thought they would drag out the info in pieces.  What an explosion of news!

  • Sarah D.

    Ahhh I’m so excited!!! :D

  • BookReader

One thing you can be sure about from Rowling, this will be filled with vibrant personalities. She’s just so amazing at coming up with the most distinctive cast of characters.

  • Guest

Omg, so excited! Barry… that cracked me up ;)

  • Anay

    Sounds awesome so excited!

  • sia

Of course every Harry Potter fan is going to say awesome, can’t wait, it’s going to be amazing blah blah blah … I love her but talk about kiss butt !

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

we love her style of writing. and story telling. Thats has nothing to do about “kiss Butt.” i and most the world is a fan of her work.

  • Maggie

The beginning of that synopsis reminded me of the beginning of Goblet of Fire, when the Riddles died and the whole town was whispering. Then again, it’s also like the beginning of the whole series, dead Potters, people whispering … she really likes to start books with a death, doesn’t she? :P

    • Elmerfud#12

Omg thats exactly what i was thinking!!! The Riddles part i mean, great minds think alike lol

    • goldensnidget

This is EXACTLY my thought process :)

  • http://twitter.com/taylie27 Taylore Thompson

I’ll be in the UK when it’s released!! Please let her be doing a book signing in Edinburgh or something!!!

  • Lewis

Sounds poor.. Barry? Really? Come on Rolling, you can come up with a better name that doesn’t hugely resemble Harry. The plot sounds poor as well as the title :/

    • shhh

Next she’s write a book for younger children with main characters called Larry and Mary.

    • stargazer

But Barry’s already dead.  It could be more of a “throwaway name,” where the person needed a name but the person doesn’t really feature in the book all that much.  It sounds like Barry’s death is a catalyst for whatever’s happening in the book, like the feather that breaks the camel’s back.

  • Ariel

  • Larael

Cue another story about death and war from Ms.Rowling.

    I’m pumped.

  • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

Omg!… wow, an announcement like this sure brings back memories!

  • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

    that’s cool!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

i hope they dont compare…. its totally different!

    • JohnnyAppleseed

i think it’s because we were all hoping for another book in the realm of potter. I’m a little dissapointed, which is why i dont want to read it and find that it sucks, lowering my opinion of J.K.

      • runa

I think she’s taken great lengths to make it clear that this isn’t another Potter, though, and I don’t think it’s fair to expect it to be.  HP is over.  Let it go.  You’ll always have the books.

  • http://twitter.com/Echoreyn Echoreyn of Athens

Blackly comic! YES!  That’s just what I was hoping for.  I’ve truly missed her humor.  Can’t wait for September 27th!

  • Carped015

It will NEVER amount to Harry Potter

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

i dont think shes trying to. Hell potter was a surprise to her. And nothing this generation will amount to Potter.

    • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

you cant really think of it like that!

  • Wergwg4rtg

    Sounds Casually boring…

  • gcw07

Sounds interesting and will be a big departure from the HP series. Looking forward to it.

  • Victoria

So excited!!!  I know the synopsis doesn’t sound amazing, but they usually suck anyway.  When I first read the synopsis for Sorcerer’s Stone, I thought it sounded completely ridiculous.  I love Jo’s writing and her style, and I trust that what she gives us will be high quality :).

Sounds like this might have a third person omniscient point of view, perhaps following character arcs for a variety of townspeople.  I think it sounds very interesting!!! Can’t wait to read it!!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

yes her writing style sucks you in!!

    • LGray1983

Completely agree with everything you said.

  • Janet Qian

Bad summary, wording makes all the conflicts seem grandiose even though all those ‘wars’ seem pretty typical to daily life… anywhere…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maria-Wang/542480760 Maria Wang

The title sounds boring and Little Brown’s summary is TERRIBLE! But i’ll give it a whirl when it comes out.  You never know.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

by you negative comment you shouldnt read it haha.

      • runa

Or she should, so she can hopefully be proven wrong, and if not, at least give it a fair chance :)

    • Phillip Good

Wow. I don’t know what people are complaining about but to me, the synopsis sounds great. It doesn’t give away much but the book sounds like good fun. I really hope there’s a midnight launch of this book.

  • Emily485

Haha Thats my birthday september 27th, I know what I’ll be doing!

  • moonshoespotter1712

Excited, but just addressing the comparisons to Potter in other comments, you shouldn’t really compare the two, and nothing can really amount to Potter, so we should just enjoy something fresh and new from Jo. :D

  • Danielle

Not gonna lie, I yawned a little.

  • AshQuill77

Ahhh!! I was totally thinking about how might release the title today just yesterday!!! She also seems to be a big fan of Thursdays (i.e. Pottermore announcement, this, announcement last month, TCV release)….

  • http://twitter.com/HUGO7321 anthony

  • jcjdturtle

psh i’m going to end up having to get it next year… all the harry potter fans are going to get it and it’s going to be constantly out of stock…

  • Luna Lovegood

YES! THANK YOU JO! I am already ready!

  • LGray1983

From the synopsis, I think there’s potential for this story to be hilarious. I’ve also thought Jo was particularly good at humor and wit. Furthermore, she’s great at creating interesting, lovable, and hate-able characters, so I’m looking forward to a whole town’s worth of interesting new personalities here.
I’m imagining this “perfect” town becoming a crazy warzone full of chaos. I have confidence that she can take even mundane-souding premise and make it entertaining.
After all, I lover her writing style even outside of the Harry Potter books. For example, I enjoyed the speech she gave to Harvard and other little articles she’s written over the years.
I think it comes down to whether you’re a fan of Harry Potter or a fan of Jo, and I am a fan of Jo as a charitable and witty personality as well as a writer.

    • Lauren

      Beautifully said!

  • natalia

    And now we wait.

all good i’ll take your pass!! Cant wait for it!!

  • NR

It doesn’t sound very interesting to me, however Rowling is such a wonderful writer that I will definitely give it a go.

  • Skatzblue

It looks like J.K. found the retweet button.

  • Guest777

I won’t say any word pro or against this book before reading it. And I will, maybe not on its first day out. But gonna read because I wanna compare it to Potter.
But I hope that the book will be great and yet not comparable to Potter at all! (Barry?)

    • Katie

I don’t think it’s fair to “compare it to Potter” They are completely different books, different genres, different well /everything/ (minus the brilliance of JK Rowling, that is)

But I totally agree on the whole “barry” thing, lol. Watch the character in here next book be “Larry” xD

  • Cori720

  • Melanroh

People say that this book sounds too ordinary, like nothing special, but didn`t Harry looked like just a child book at the beginning? Brace yourself, people, J. K. is back!

  • Vajackster

  • Welovehp5

I think that this sounds pretty good, or at least has the potential to be good. I will most definitively read it!

  • Arial_29

Sorry but it doesn’t seem the least bit interesting to me. And I was really looking forward to a new book by Jo.

    • GleeHaterExceptForDarrenCriss

helloo?? its JK Rowling its exactly going to be bad??!!

      • GleeHaterExceptForDarrenCriss

        *not exactly

        • Kelly Barker

Well, just because it doesn’t interest someone doesn’t mean they’re saying it’s going to be “bad.”

  • Uorufu

Sort of like a ‘City of Satan’? Sounds awesome. =)

  • Alohomora

Doesn’t sound so good, to be honest. But JKR wrote it which makes it a must-buy, must-read.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryland-Maserang/100000912928757 Ryland Maserang

its a vague synopsis, can’t adequately assume based off such uninformed basis’

  • GleeHaterExceptForDarrenCriss

  • seggler

I love these kinds of books so I can’t wait to see how J K goes writing this genre.

  • Andrew

JK Rowling is a genius! The target market of the Harry Potter books (kids at the time of release) are now all old enough to read her latest book, She keeps the same fanbase as target market
