Fans may not be the only ones sad to see Hunger Games director Gary Ross go. The actors who played Cato, Foxface and Thresh are just as disappointed.

E!Online checked in with Alexander Ludwig (Cato) at a Nylon Magazine anniversary party.

“One thing about Gary is, he can do everyone’s job better than you can,” Ludwig told E!. “It’s an honor working with such a talented director. He is an unbelievable guy and an actor’s director, which is amazing…. Nobody could really do what Gary did. I honestly believe that 100 percent.”

Jacqueline Emerson (Foxface) was also sorry to see Ross go.

“That makes me so sad,” she said. “I’m sorry, I can’t move on yet. I’m still in mourning. I don’t know that anyone else could bring it to life the way that he did.”

Before the news broke of Gary Ross’ departure Tuesday night, Josh Hutcherson had said  Ross was “the only one that could ever direct” Catching Fire, during a Detention press junket.

However, Dayo Okeniyi (Thresh) had some suggestions for possible Catching Fire directors.

“I’d like to see a David Fincher Catching Fire or Darren Aronofsky,” he said. “I think he’d be amazing for the second movie. Be a little bit edgier, darker.”

David Fincher has directed Fight Club, The Social Network and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Darren Aronofsky is known for directing The Black Swan and The Wrestler.

What do you think of Okeniyi’s suggestions?

Perhaps they should start watching what they say… I mean, it doesn’t matter so much for any of these actors, since their characters are all dead, but I’m sure there are plenty of capable directors, and the actors ought to make him/her feel at least a little welcome.

I’m a big Fincher fan, but it’s seems unlikely that such a legendary director would direct the movie adaption of a YA novel when he has so much projects to choose from.

Fincher would be great to see. I loved Benjamin Button, and of course TSN and TGWTDT were great. It’s a bit of a far reach, and I don’t see it happening, though it’d be awesome.

lol too bad they’ll have to pick a director before we see if THG is nominated [and wins] any Oscars. It’s already been loved by critics and is doing phenomenally well in the box office, but I’m sure an Oscar nomination and win would really give it the edge it needs to get guys like Fincher and Aronofsky even interested. Man, they would rock.

Oh well. Maybe for Mockingjay?? =D

i wish critical acclaim was the basis for Oscar noms :’( other movies that got rave reviews aren’t even mentioned at the Oscars

      • Katie

yeah… like Harry Potter… (sorry I’m never gonna get over that)

    • moonshoespotter1712

It got good reviews, but not like Oscar-good reviews. I doubt it’d be up for anything but technical awards. Maybe for its production design.

Funny that the only people expressing real negativity about his leaving are the people that aren’t coming back. I suppose Josh came pretty close, but I bet he’ll change his tune now that he knows he’ll be working for someone else. None of the others have an real accountability for what they say. They only worked for Gary and won’t have to work for the next guy.

That being said, I’d love to see Fincher take the project. Gary was incredible, but we’ve obviously all got to accept that someone else can and will be taking the next chapter.

i honestly feel like the hunger games just died..i’m with jacqueline emerson, i’m like mourning this right now. no one will be able to do gary’s job.

  • Vajackster

Yeah, listen to Dayo, everybody. Let’s actually make a decent movie.

Fincher is versatile and perfect for the job… But it seems like that’s not gonna happen, I just don’t see him picking this project up… One can dream

  • DreamNox58

If the new director that comes on board does a better job than Gary, which I’m sure should not be too difficult, then kudos to him/her.  I would also like to see the film a bit darker as mentioned above in the article.

Hopefully they find someone good to replace him. I just hope they don’t bring in someone like David Yates to destroy the series.

    • Andromeda

I can’t even begin to understand how you think David Yates destroyed anything.

    • moonshoespotter1712

      David Yates didn’t destroy anything.

    • coolcatcheesecake

AGREED. David Yates was the worst director the Potter franchise could have picked…..

  • sammylovegood

I know that it will never happen in a million years, but i wish Peter Jackson could direct it!!  He did such a wonderful job with LoTR, and he would make Catching Fire really cool!!

    STEVEN SODERBURGH!!!!!! PLEASE

I think it’s great that the actors are being so genuine with their parting compliments to Ross, but I can’t help but think it’s gonna be awkward for whoever tries to step in.

    • Daughter of Eve

I was just thinking that as I was reading this. The actors are very complimentary of Ross, which is understandable, but they make him to be the only person for the job. And if he’s not coming back, and someone is bound to take up the role of director, it’ll be awkward/odd to see them complimenting the next person.

luckily all of these comments are from actors whose characters are dead so they won’t have to be on set for the awkward :)
