‘Merlin’ re-casts Mordred, replaces Asa Butterfield with older actor

Not too excited about this… I loved Asa Butterfield as Mordred, but I understand that he has other things going on, so I’m okay with them replacing him. A 23 year-old though? Way too old. 

i’m thinking they’re going to do a fast forward.  I mean, it’s been at least 2 or 3 years since we’ve seen mordred, and they show has a tendency to jump a lot. **SPOIIERISH** since mordred kills arthur in the original legends, i think they NEED an older actor. 

Another reason for the cast change?

Between Series 2 and 3 there’s been a year. The same between Series 3 and 4. Let’s assume each season is a year, give or take. so that will be 4 years. If they have a gap of a year again between Series 4 and Series 5, then that would be 5 years. When we last saw Mordred he was 12. The actor is currently 14. If we take all this in to consideration, then Mordred should be 16 – 17 when series 5 of Merlin begins.

What!!!! Asa is awesome as Mordred. This is just going to ruin it!

While I liked Asa in the role, the show has already had many time jumps throughout the seasons. So Mordred should already be 4 or 5 years older then Asa actually is. So a recast isn’t that big of a deal.

O.O Woah. That’s just… weird.
The recasting is understandable. Asa will be busy with Ender’s Game, and more time has passed in the show’s storyline than in real life (though Asa himself has grown a LOT since he last appeared as Mordred. As in… he’s ridiculously tall now. :P)
However, 23 is a bit much. That guy doesn’t look at all like a teenage boy, and there’s really no reason for Mordred to suddenly super-age or whatever. Mordred romance with Morgana? That’s just weird. Disgusting, even – like, Oedipus-esque. Mordred’s supposed to be her son according to legen, and the producers have stated that they’d like to maintain that mother-son relationship dynamic, as shown in the first few episodes Mordred’s been in.

… Overall, not too happy with this particular choice for a cast switch-up. They shoulda picked someone younger. There are plenty of good British teen actors who could’ve taken the part.

I know it will be awesome, just got through watching season 4 and it was the 
best one yet, this show keeps getting better and better, in spite of the fact that 
I still think they cast a completely wrong Guinevere. 

or maybe Mordred could be Morgana’s son but they just haven’t revealed it yet but I think it would be quite interesting to see Morgana have a romantic side of life.

Asa Butterfield is 15 now. I think he could pull off a 16-17 year old. He’s acted as a 12 year old at age 14 in Hugo, and now at 15, he will be playing a 10 year old in Ender’s Game. I’m pretty sure he is capable of playing a 16-17 year old. But either way, at least Mordred comes back. Although, this new actor will never, ever, be the Mordred we all have known.

are we just going to pretend to notice that Mordred is now like 23 in the show, or…
