When it comes to being cast in huge film franchises, apparently the rules amongst agents or studios is that it’s “one and done.”

Actor Kellan Lutz, who plays Emmett Cullen in The Twilight Saga, says that he was told he couldn’t audition for The Hunger Games.

From The Insider:

Friday night, Insider.com’s Mikey Glazer caught up with Twilight star Kellan Lutz at Audi’s Super Bowl party, where Emmett Cullen told us he loved The Hunger Games script and really wanted a role in the film — however, he was quickly informed by the Powers That Be there could not be any “crossover” between the two franchises.

Do you think a Twilight star in The Hunger Games would have caused any issues? While we agree the two franchises need to be kept separate, having a supporting Twilight actor taking on another supporting role wouldn’t have created much of a comparison. We’re interested in your opinions!

Lutz could’ve made a good Finnick or maybe even Cato – though he’s probably too big/old for the latter role.

Thanks to The Insider via The Examiner for the tip.

He *would* have made a good Finnick. What a missed opportunity.

He would have been a sexy Finnick! That is too bad, I really like Kellan and I think he is incredibly talented. It shouldn’t matter what films they have been in, it seems really unfair to be biased like that.

well if that is the case then why was Robert Pattinson allowed to audition as Edward Cullen. Pattinson was in Harry Potter well before Twilight, maybe it was because he was only in one HP film but either way he was in another big franchise before Twilight.

  • Laura

That’s too bad considering Emmett does next to nothing in the movies. He’s only there to say a “witty” one-liner and then stand next to Rosalie for the rest of the  film. What a missed opportunity for Kellan.

Kellan would have made a scary as hell Cato but he should have been allowed to audition since Emmett isn’t really a big part of the twilight movies.

    • Josh

He looks too old to play Cato.

  • Ally

I’m not really a fan of Twilight, but it wouldn’t have made a difference to me if he’d been cast in the Hunger Games. Not as Finnick though… I mean, I like Kellan, but he’s all wrong for Finnick.

i mean i would’ve like to see him i think he deserved a audition or something

  • http://twitter.com/WhatTheGrace Grace Nzita

I think he definitely should have been allowed to audition, although he plays a Cullen in Twilight, his role in the films isn’t that large, it wouldn’t have made too much of a difference.
The guy who plays Mike in Twilight has more lines than Kellan does throughout the entire franchise and i think they would have allowed him to audition for The Hunger Games. It would have been a slightly bigger issue if one of the main 3 actors from Twilight tried to audition.

OK so Robert Pattinson can go from a minor Potter role to a major Twilight role but Kellan can’t go from a minor Twilight role to a minor Hunger Games role? What a missed opportunity.

On the plus side, its nice to see the studios are making a real effort to distinguish Hunger Games from Twilight. I just don’t think this was the way to go about it.

yes yes yes^^^ everything you said.

robert pattison played harry potter 2007 before even first twilight came out so if it was rite now he wouldn’t allowed to play in harry potter

      • Anonymous

Obviously. No one would go from a major role in Twilight to a minor one in HP. my point is that filming for BD was finished by the time HG’s filming began. He wasn’t even allowed to audition, which was stupid.

  • Walpurgisquill

LMAO Like anyone wants a Twifag in The Hunger Games anyway.

    • jordan.d

Don’t use the term “fag,” it is an inappropriate homosexist term.

      • Prettyfairy1996

        ^THANK. YOU. AMEN.

      • Walpurgisquill

@e40929315d4fe1b0894bddd3b7dd4224:disqus  Haha, I wasn’t using it as that, people add ‘fag’ to the end of anything to describe enthusiasm for it. Sometimes I forget where I’m posting.

        Sorry!

  • Pamvargas88

For the people that are using Robert Pattinson as an argument point, its sort of useless seeing as how the Harry Potter Franchise and the Twilight Franchise aren’t owned by the same company, whereas Twilight and Hunger Games are. They have more control over crossing over actors and apparently they didn’t want to do that.

    • http://twitter.com/ambersorensen ambersorensen

Ah. I didn’t know that, but it makes perfect sense.  I was going to say, Robert Downey Jr. has two franchises, but they’re owned by WB and Disney so I guess it isn’t an issue.

    • Catherine

Well no, because even though they’re different companies, Summit was still aware that Robert Pattinson played Cedric Diggory, and they had control over creating that crossover.  A better reasoning is that they didn’t know at the time that Twilight was going to be so popular.  But that doesn’t explain Jamie Campbell-Bower.  But perhaps it was WB who allowed that crossover (I don’t remember whether HP or Twilight cast him first).

  • Kay

Finnick is my favorite character in the series… Kellan would have been a bad choice for him, in my own opinion…

    • jordan.d

I agree… I have always pictured Ryan Gosling as Finnick when reading the books

      • No

        Absolutely not!

  • Laura Jones

So was Rob Pattinson and Jamie Campbell Bower excluded from this rule?

  • akacj18

R Pats in HP and Twilight, then Kellan Lutz in Twilight and THG… it would feel kind of like fandom incest… hahaha

  • just me

I thought he would be perfect for the role of Gale.

  • thatonegirl8

I say good riddance. Let the Twilight stars have their Twilight fame and let the Hunger Games stars have their Hunger Games fame. I don’t see the problem in keeping them separate….

  • http://twitter.com/hp_otaku Veronica

It is a good point that once Lionsgate and Summit merge that Twilight and The Hunger Games will be from the same company, but I still think that he should have been allowed to audition.  I would have been interested in seeing what role he’d get.

As others have pointed out, Twilight has 2 actors in Harry Potter films (Robert Pattinson and Jamie Campbell Bower).  And then you have the leading lady of The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence as the current Mystique for the new X-Men, and that’s one major role to another in my opinion.

I think that because Emmett’s role in the films is a minor one (something he shares in common with his Twilight/HP crossover co-stars) I really don’t think it would  been a problem to let him audition.

  • Lucia

Geez, they should have at least let him audition! I don’t really know how they can justify doing that, particularly when they already have some form of a working relationship with him from Twilight. The fact that it’s in the same company shouldn’t make a difference (though it obviously does). If they didn’t want him in the film then they should have just let him audition and not pick him behind the scenes; there’d be much less backlash then! Not saying that it’s right to go behind an actors back but it happens so much in Hollywood that I’m surprised they didn’t just do it and not bother to tell him he couldn’t.

  • leviosaaax3

He wouldn’t be a good Finnick. In my opinion, I think that Garrett Hedlund is the PERFECT Finnick. <3

  • Catherine

As people already said, that makes no sense.  Robert Pattinson? Jamie Campbell-Bower?  Kellan does fit the role of Finnick.

I think it even makes sense to have some crossover actors, because they’re the same type of movies, so the same type of actors could fit the roles.

  • Britney Fans Love

LOL what? Jamie Campbell Bower can be in Harry Potter (the biggest franchise in HISTORY), Twilight and yet he still got the part as Jace in The Mortal Instruments which has a lot of potential to be mainstream.

Kellan should have at least been given a chance instead of just been wiped of the list. It’s not fair to any actor or actress.

  • Rae

Although I can’t picture him as Finnick, I think he should’ve got a chance esp if Robert Pattinson and Jamie Campbell Bower did crossover franchises.

  • Lauren

There’s a “too big” for Cato?

    • Jules

They are supposed to be starving, even in the richer districts.

  • Lauren

I think that using pretty much unknown actors is the way to go for all the major characters in big fandoms like this. People knew who Rob and Kristen were before, but they hadn’t had any huge, break-out roles yet. Neither have Josh or Jennifer. If you try to use big actors, too many people have too many opinions already. I haven’t seen anything with Josh or Jennifer, so I don’t have feelings either way.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1683360003 Paige Barton

he would have been an awesome Cato

  • Anonymous

That’s just stupid, especially since both roles would be so minor. Executive meddling never makes sense…

  • Kristyn

It shouldn’t matter whether a film is a huge franchise or a small indie. Actors should be able to make career moves at their discretion. It wouldn’t be right to go from a major role in a franchise to another major roll, but to go on to a minor role should be no big deal.

It’s like telling someone “you worked at The Children’s Place, so now you can’t work at any other children’s clothing store.” It’s silly and unnecessary. So to bar someone from auditing for a role just because they were in another franchise isn’t fair.

He’d have making a GREAT Cato!

  • Laurz1983

I would love to have seen Kellan in THG.  He would have been a great Cato I think, yes maybe a little old but he could have made it work.  Stupid rule.

  • sanracs

i get it. the rhetoric of it alone. clearly, they DO.NOT.WANT to be represented as anything like twilight. however right or wrong that may be based on potential audience gained or lost, that seems to be a strategy they try to hold on to as much as they possibly can.

  • Sylviashrader

i dont think that’s fair and they’re done making twilight anyway.

  • Elle

He would have made a great Cato!
