Here’s a surprising statistic, and a testament to the power of Glee and StarKid fans: Darren Criss’ one-week (8 show) total in How to Succeed in Business beat any 8-show week Dan Radcliffe had performed in his entire run.

Reports Entertainment Weekly:

In its first week with the 24-year-old Glee star, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying raked in nearly $1.4 million at the box office. That’s a dip from Radcliffe’s final week in the hit musical revival (when the show grossed $1.9 million in an unusual nine-performance week), but it outpaces any previous eight-show week when the Harry Potter star appeared. All week, Criss managed to filled 99.8 percent of the seats at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and kept NYC police busy controlling crowds outside the stage door.

Congrats to Darren Criss, Beau Bridges, and the entire cast! Could the record breaking total be because of Criss’ limited 3-week run? Since there are far less dates for Criss than there were Radcliffe, StarKid/Glee fans are highly concentrated in this small time frame.

I guess because if some reallly wanted to see darren that had to go in these couple of weeks, but if they wanted to see dan they could’ve gone anytime for the whole year.

Very happy for Darren though, I hope he continues to be very successful.

  • Sarah

First! Criss is such a champ and a notoriously better singer than Radcliffe so this doesn’t surprise me at all.

    • moonshoespotter1712

I think Darren’s a good singer, but I don’t think he’s amaazing. I wouldn’t say he’s a notoriously better singer either… he’s more known for his singing than dan is for obvious reasons.

    • Trixie99

Darren’s a good singer, but he doesn’t sound that great in the clips I heard of the show online.  It was rather disappointing.

      • http://twitter.com/KimmyLorraine Kimberly Lorraine

that’s because he has just only 2 weeks to rehears its, he should be starting rehearsing on the first week of December but that freaking GLEE schedule leaves him a little bit time, proving the rumors that GLEE kids are over worked

  • Trixie99

I don’t find it that surprising considering Darren’s run is only for 3 weeks and if his fans want to see him, they have to go now.  Dan’s run lasted for 10 months so people had more time to go see him.

  • Tom

Yeah it’s definitely to do with the limited run. Plus Darren has a lot of crazy fans. I expect Dan would have attracted a more refined crowd.

  • http://www.facebook.no/people/Victoria-Lie/533231128 Victoria Lie

I’m super proud of Darren, but this really isn’t that weird. Darren is only in the stage for three weeks. Dan was there for a year… which makes the math pretty obvious. Those who want to see Darren is crammed into three weeks. Those who wanted to see Dan was spread out over the course of a year. But as mentioned: I am SO proud of both my Harry’s – gotta admit, Darren especially.

  • dancernerd77

Fandom shocker? Really? has it ever occured to you that probably at 75% of Darren’s Fans are Potter Fans?

    • http://www.hypable.com Andrew Sims

Yes… so what’s the connection between Darren fans and Potter fans have to do with it?

      • moonshoespotter1712

        i don’t really understand it either…

    • moonshoespotter1712

But it could come as a surprise for people, because you would expect dan to be more popular.

      • Trixie99

These sales don’t exactly indicate who’s more popular though.  It’s difficult to compare sales for being on Broadway 3 weeks and being on Broadway for 10 months.

    • Fravit

      Where did you get 75%?

  • http://twitter.com/ArielRaff Ariel Raff

you know why Darren Criss is out saleing Dan? because he’s harry freaking potter!

    • Beautifullytragic8

There’s only one Harry Potter and Darren Criss ain’t it…

      • ALEXXX

lol, I’m pretttty sure that Ariel Raff was referencing Harry Potter Musical. But its all good. haha

        • Natalie

But those references stopped being cute or funny a while ago. So yeah, doesn’t matter.

          • Annette

            Natalie, you are a buzzkill.

      • moonshoespotter1712

i agree completely. i love darren but Dan rad’s the harry. I know it was a avps reference but even so…

  • Kavitha

I wish I was in part of the 0.2 percent of seats! :P

  • Malia

Darren has sold a spectacular number of tickets, but you don’t have to work in the theatre business (like I do) to know that that’s because of his limited 3-week engagment. Not to mention the fact that he has had primetime promotion (thanks to FOX). I consider myself an expert, and I highly doubt he could sustain those numbers for more than a few months.

  • http://twitter.com/shadedgrey63 Kate Munshower

It’s just because he’s there for such a short time, and has a ton of fangirls.  I guarantee by the time he leaves and Nick Jonas steps in, it will go back to normal – or likely be less profitable, if you ask my opinion.  Dan and John made an amazing comedy team.

I went to ‘American Idiot’ in March, when Davey Havok was in the show for only two weeks – and while he has notably less fangirls, it seemed like shaking things up does affect ticket sails.  Dan was in ‘How to Succeed…’ for quite a while.

    Sad day

  • Fravit

I think Darren Criss in more talented in this regard, and I would much rather pay to see Darren in this show than Dan, based solely on singing and dancing ability. Also, stage acting and screen acting are two different abilities – Darren is simply beter suited for this role than Dan.

    • Trixie99

I’m not sure about that.  From reviews I’ve read, there are a lot of people who prefer Dan’s performance.  Of course not everyone will agree, so I guess it all just boils down to personal preference.  I can’t say either way for myself since I haven’t seen the show and can’t judge either performance in it’s entirety.

    • Ajmwicked

I saw Daniel perform and he was flawless, especially towards the end of his run…I saw him twice. He had great charisma, sharp dancing skills and lovely pipes ;) He was an amazing Finch, gave it his all and had great chemistry with John…from the videos I’ve seen of Darren performing, his Finch falls short…there is no comparison in the level of talent…but that’s just my opinion lol.

    • WillowBlood

Ajmwick and Trixie99 have said it all… Dan Radcliffe was amazing, particularly when he was dancing, and he didn’t have a bad voice either. He can do both stage and screen acting very well.

I definitely agree with the fact that Darren was on for a shorter amount of time was a factor in him overtaking Dan in ticket sales. I also think a large factor is because much of Darren’s fan base is made up of “Potter Heads” because of the Very Potter musicals he stared in as Harry Potter with Starkid. That gives Darren a bit of an upper hand on tickets being bought by people who are going to see H2S just because of the “Star” because he has many of Dan’s Harry Potter fans plus the rest of the “Starkids” as well as all the “Gleeks” out there.

They are both very very talented guys. I wish i could have seen them both preform.

  • http://twitter.com/when_she_smiles lindsay

It’s definitely the shorter run. Everyone knew they had time to see Dan, but Darren is already one third of the way through his run.

  • Anon8

    Go Darren!!!
I also love Dan though and think this is because
    A) A testament of Glee/Starkid fans
B)The limited time and rushed feeling
    C) As on cast member pointed out, Darren’s fan’s might be a little older and therefore have more access to Broadway

  • http://twitter.com/JujBres Julie Bresnahan

This doesn’t surprise me, even if Darren had a longer run.

  • Hollyhurley

    Nooooooooo!

  • Alissa

I dont think this is shocking at all! He’s only going to be doing it for three weeks and he’s so talented, no offense to Dan who I love just as much!

  • http://twitter.com/xhpfanatic Grace Chen

    That’s kinda strange…

  • http://twitter.com/malfoyette Angela

Not really that surprising considering he would only be there for a short amount of time so fans are tripping over each other to see him, whereas Dan had an entire year to rake audiences in. Not to mention the fact that besides the theatre-geeks that came to see the show for the sole purpose of seeing the show, realistically Dan had the support of only the Harry Potter fandom behind him, as opposed to Darren, who has the Harry Potter, Glee, and Starkid fandom behind him.

    • megmo07

But I would say that the Harry Potter fandom is much, much bigger than either Glee or Starkid.

  • http://twitter.com/Tarah94 Tarah

I’d prefer Dan any day. I don’t believe it was that way because Darren’s more popular because as much as I love Darren, he’s not. First of all, Dan was on Broadway for a year.. Darren: 3 weeks. So, of course there would be a bigger rush to get the tickets for Darren because for Dan, it was really a matter of “Oh, we can see him pretty much any time.” In addition, I don’t think that many people knew Dan could sing, and if you were unsure you probably wouldn’t go. Darren’s only known for his singing, so, while Dan’s fans might be hesitant to see him in a show in which he sings, Darren’s fans are obviously very familiar with him singing. Lastly, A huge portion of Dan’s fans live across the world, which probably made it nearly impossible of them to get to New York. While Darren does have fans around the world, I think it’s safe to say that the majority of his fanbase is American which makes it easier for them to see him.

  • Witchfav

Or maybe, Dan has HP fans in UK that are unable to make it to US, while Darren has his HP fanbase in US and more in Glee.

  • Neonhide

hahaha, fandom shocker… i had to laugh :) and now i’m going back into my corner crying because i live in austria and will never see the show

  • guest

This is not really true, Dan has the theater record, made the last week he was there, if we count only 8 shows it made 1.7m which is more than the 1.4m Darren made, even with more expensive tickets than when Daniel was starring. Plus, he is on a limited run so of couse the fans are hurrying to see him, and it’s the first week of the year, when there are more turist in NY and people on vacation…

  • Seamus MacGillicuddy

Darren Criss is part of a massive fan-driven show on a huge network. Daniel Radcliffe is the face of the biggest film franchise in history. Both men have had droves of fans attend showings of this production. Both groups of fans have done their best, or worst, to distract from the experience of seeing a Broadway show. They scream bloody murder, they charge from their seats at the end of the show, etc… One could say they are only in attendance because of their leading man. That being the case, I would argue that because Radcliffe has put in more hours on this production, has had the benefit of more rehearsal time, worked his ass off to promote it (remember the Thanksgiving day parade performance?) that he will get the edge in terms of positive criticism. The success of Criss’ performance will be determined by financial gain, and he had that before he even stepped foot on stage. It’s a shame broadway is being reduced to starring vehicles for Hollywood stars and commercial franchises.

  • outslider

I don’t believe it! Darren hasn’t voice. He is awkward!!! 0_0
And Dan… Dan has the theater record!!! He’s the best Finch! He was better than Broderick!

  • Anonymous

I think that it’s definitely because he had a smaller run time.
