British journalist Greg Palast has made some waves in the Potter world by detailing the ‘alternate ending’ that J.K. Rowling apparently described at length to him. Check out the alternate ending, as described by Palast from memory.

Palast, who says he is friendly with J.K. Rowling, told the author that he was not thrilled with the ending of Deathly Hallows. In response, Jo apparently described an alternate ending to the series that she had written. Here is what Palast posted on his website today:

To the Forbidden Forest

Harry marched toward the field where Voldemort waited with his pack of Dementors. Harry’s scar burned brutally, saving him the pain of thinking too deeply about his decision, likely to bring him nothing but death.

What special evil, what deadly and devious spell had the Dark Lord prepared for Harry’s destruction? Voldemort had hunted after Harry for more than a decade; doubtless Voldemort would arm himself with a special curse far more powerful and final than the Avada Kedavra which had failed to kill Harry as a child.

Harry was terribly right. The Dark Lord, in his clearing in the Forbidden Forest, was preparing a charm as devastating as Harry feared, and far more horrific. As Harry marched to this fated meeting, Voldemort passed his wand among the icy Dementors, commanding each to lay their Kiss upon it.

Voldemort, in those pained, lonely nights of his exile and recovery, had conceived of a way to hurl a Dementor’s kiss from his wand, the kiss that would take away the soul of its victim forever. And now he would blast Harry with hundreds of them. Voldemort’s reward would be greater than watching Harry’s burial. He would have Harry frozen in place, Harry’s living being encased for eternity at the moment of Harry’s ultimate humiliation and defeat, a terrifying monument to Voldemort’s victory for all to see for all time. Voldemort’s joy rose with every Dementor’s kiss to his wand.

Harry could feel their grave-like cold as he approached and the pull of their despair. It was hopeless, and he was helpless in the face of it. And he knew it.

But then, Harry felt the presence of a young man and woman, though he could not see them. These two ghosts lovingly held his body up and raised his spirit. It was, he was certain, the last remaining life-force of his parents, making one last sacrifice by joining him on his final journey. He allowed himself a moment of peaceful happiness, feeling them so close.

Then he stopped. Harry shivered with a deep chill of recognition. They were not his parents. They were Voldemort’s: the young Tom Riddle and his bride who, for this occasion, had taken back her beautiful maid’s countenance. They said, using no words, “Our dearest son, we will not allow you to be harmed.”

Were their words for him? Or for Voldemort? Somehow, it didn’t seem to matter – they seemed so kind when he needed nothing more at this moment than a parent’s love.

Harry, and the two warm spirits becoming more visible, approached the edge of the swirling crowd of Voldemort’s followers, who parted, preparing to give the victim an easy corridor to his doom.

Voldemort’s wand had returned to his white, skeletal hand. The Dark Lord pointed it confidently to where Harry would surely emerge from the crowd, not yet to destroy Potter but to hold him while he prepared to give Harry an oration on the eternal punishment about to strike him.

Voldemort laughed when Harry stumbled through. But when the Dark Lord saw the specters of his parents, he howled as if cut in half. With his furious heart in flames, Voldemort immediately unleashed the deadly Kisses, bellowing, “Oppugno Mortimbessios!” And all the vile terrors of the Dementors, in an unstoppable flash from his wand, rushed toward Harry and the spirits at his side.

It was only a hundredth of a second for Voldemort’s curse to reach Harry. But somehow the world seemed to slow down, the Earth ceased to rotate; all on the planet held still, though Harry was aware he was free to move. Harry had planned every shield charm for his defense, but all now were clearly useless. Harry found himself unable to do more than calmly bend to one knee and bow his head, preparing to accept the force of the blow and his death and end.

As he kneeled, in that quiet moment outside time, the two shadows flew from him toward Voldemort. And Voldemort changed. The Dementors’ chill wind, and Time, moved backward; and there was Voldemort, growing to his younger, more potent, frightening self.

The curse struck Harry’s scar, obliterating it, then, in a loud roar, he felt the crushing pain of his skull opening, and then the shrieking curse rushing from his head – back toward the wand that sent it.

As the curse turned back toward him, Voldemort continued to grow younger still, until he was a little child again with his mother and father at his side. When they realized the full force of Voldemort’s own spell was about to strike him, his parents put their reassuring arms around their son to protect him from this ultimate blow.

And then it struck. And now the three entwined souls, Tom Riddle, his wife and young child, would remain forever entombed in that one moment, never able to leave.

And never wanting to.

Hogwarts AD 2130

The headmaster, his stringy white beard uncombed and his wrinkled, bald head topped by a drooping wizard’s cap, looked with wistful gratitude at the empty picture frame he’d convinced the Ministry to put up, despite their reluctance. He knew he’d soon be residing in that little square etched with the name, “Harry Potter,” separated from Albus Dumbledore’s only by the portraits of Headmistresses McGonagall and Chang.

The old wizard could hear below the school abuzz with preparations for his 150th birthday. He shifted Ginny, a bird of paradise, to a perch nearer his desk. His wife, rather than grow old, had turned herself into this beautiful bird, but still insisted on giving un-birdlike advice. “Harry, dearest, you can’t miss your own birthday party. And it’s so lovely outside.”

Indeed, the summer day had brought out scores of picnickers who had come to set their baskets and blankets out near the warm light cast by the living statue of the happy family with the little child. No one but the old headmaster knew who was encased in that glowing sphere. When the Dementors were released from the spell of Voldemort, they, and indeed every wizard excepting Harry and the shade of Albus, were cleansed of all memory of the Dark Lord. Now, after more than a century, curiosity about the family in the statue had long ago ceased. Harry had simply ordered a plaque placed there. It said only, “Riddles.”

“I will go,” he told his feathered wife, “but I have to keep an eye on the boy for a bit.” Harry’s great, great grandson, not yet able to walk, silently played on the rug with his chocolate frog. Then suddenly, in inexplicable anger, little Tom crushed the candy animal. Harry watched this, and knew the whole world would soon darken again for generations to come.

Hmm, this seems pretty far-fetched, even for a book about wizards and witches. Keep in mind that this won’t read exactly as Rowling would have written it…it’s from the memory of Palast. It’s fascinating to think that the ending would be so dramatically different, either way!

What do you think? Is this just a bad piece of fan fiction, or do you think J.K. Rowling could have made this a reality?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marlies-Brooks/552550248 Marlies Brooks

Definitely a bad piece of fanfiction. This just sounds ridiculous. And if she really did come up with this, im sure she is incredibly happy she didn’t use it.

  • Eric

Absolute rubbish. Not a chance that this is in any way legitimate.

  • RussTurner

I don’t believe any of it.. maybe he cant take a joke?

  • http://twitter.com/SkyelinePigeon Heather Murray

Headmaster Chang? No way.  Bad, badddd fanfiction as this dude tries to get a little attention.

  • coolcatcheesecake

personally, i think it’s very strange. but that just might be because we’re (including me) are so used to the way that Deathly Hallows ended in print. i also didn’t get why Ginny was a bird and thought that the epilogue would be even cheesier than the one in the book. thank you JKR for going with the one that you chose!

  • Anonymous

I’m sorry. This is a pile of crap.

  • http://sarahemartin.com/ sarah m

HAHA. That is so bad and such an obvious ploy for attention that it’s laughable.

  • http://twitter.com/Lillie_Peterson Lillie Peterson

it sounds much more like a crappy fan-fiction than and actual alternate ending. if this were jo’s alternate ending, it would completely go against everything she’d been working up to.

  • http://twitter.com/ivangatewood Ivan Gatewood

This is horrible, I dont think JK Rowling is capable of writing such a bad ending! It doesn’t even make sense!

  • hungerpotterfan

Um I feel like the journalist just made that all up..it makes no sense

  • http://twitter.com/Celtise Celtise

    Definitely a load of bullsh!t.

  • Anonymous

So obviously a god awful piece of fan fiction or a despicable ploy for attention from Palast. Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the last chapter of the last book written soon after the first book was finished? I just can’t believe a journalist would post something that will undoubtedly ruin his name for a long, long time.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1422324074 Fayge Goldstein

As if! There’s no way this is real. Jo is too good of a writer to have produced such rubbish (and that’s putting it kindly!)

  • http://twitter.com/chessley_meyers Chelsea Miles

Is he sure that Rowling wrote this…or is he confusing her with Stephenie Meyer?

    • Alyss

*in very serious and official voice* Let’s go with the latter.

      • http://twitter.com/zachjonesmay Zach Jonesmay

I will tend to agree!  – Zach Jonesmay

    • Lilcutieg

stop with the whole Twilight Vs Harry Potter thing Jheeze!!

      • Remus Moody

        • Remus Moody

I mean Stephanie Meyer freakin’ sucks when it comes to writing…. Which unfortunately why she is even half famous.

          • I<3Books

That’s one person’s opinion vs. millions.

          • Gateskp

You should probably make that 1 and 1/2 opinions (or more because of other people).  I think her writing is pretty pathetic myself (pathetic, somewhat childish, weak, along those lines).  My interpretation of the first book of her “saga”:

Page 1: “I’m moving to Washington.”

Page 2-200: “Oh my god, I can’t stop obsessing over this guy!”

Page 201-350: *Spends time with guy*

Page 350-400: *Almost gets killed because of guy, remains with guy*

I regret ever reading that series.  I read the entire thing, then Harry Potter, then couldn’t pick it up again.

(NOTE: I have no idea how many pages there are, nor do I care.  I’m saying this because there may be die-hard fans who will accuse me of never reading the books, or some rubbish like that.  I, regretfully, read them all.)

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000008061767 Justine E Woodard

            Make that two

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000008061767 Justine E Woodard

            Make that 2 1/2

      • http://twitter.com/Andrew_ww Andrew W

Oh yeah, Twilight is such a good story. In Breaking Dawn she builds up to this big battle where everyone shows up, stares at eachother for a little while, and leaves. Pathetic. People who haven’t read that book are going to be so POd when it turns out nothing happens at the end.

…Just like this fake ending from someone looking for attention.

    • Witchy Woman

J.K. Rowling told the journalist her alternate ending, but he wrote it down.

      • http://erictheperson.tumblr.com Eric Coppes

Yeah… ummm… about that. This whole thing is a lie from a guy trying to get attention.

        That is all.

      • http://erictheperson.tumblr.com Eric Coppes

Yeah… ummm… about that. This whole thing is a lie from a guy trying to get attention.

        That is all.

      • Gateskp

Do you really think J.K. Rowling, author of 7 of the best books ever, would’ve even considered writting the ending like that?

      • http://twitter.com/taylie27 taylore thompson

Do you think that the woman who kept Snape’s memory, the Horcuxes and the hallows secret for 10 years would tell a journalist an alternate ending?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000008061767 Justine E Woodard

Thats what i though…. Seems like reading Twilight again..

  • Anonymous

Absolute rubbish!! There’s no way that’s genuine! At least I hope it isn’t because it would have been an enormous anti-climax for that to have been the real ending of DH. I don’t believe that Jo would finish the book by hinting at the whole cycle starting all over again. And “Oppugno Mortimbessios” – really?! Also, I can’t believe that Jo would have ended the whole saga with the curse rebounding off Harry just like it did when he was a baby, that’s ridiculous and would have been an incredibly disappointing conclusion, far too predictable.

And as if Ginny would turn herself into a bird!! That’s the most un-Ginny thing I’ve ever heard and I don’t think Jo would have written Harry ending up as headmaster of Hogwarts, it’s just too predictable and formulaic.

Ok rant over. I really hope that ending wasn’t from Jo otherwise I’ve basically just blasphemed!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mirna-Edith-Juarez/100000020301722 Mirna Edith Juarez

It has to be a complete fake.

  • http://twitter.com/LiamFloyd Liam Floyd

In the 1% chance that this was real… I am thankful she didn’t use it.

  • Tom

Wow. Wtf? That was weird. Jo would never write this. I hope.

  • http://www.facebook.com/patrick.fincutter Patrick Fincutter

I think that this is just fan fiction. If it wasn’t I think that Rowling would have kept everything after Harry’s “death” ie. kings cross and the rest of the battle before the epilogue. She has said countless times that there will not be an other Harry Potter book. Though I would personally love for there to be another book this ending would have left it very wide open for another book, granted it would be called something different because he would be dying soon, it wouldn’t be called “Harry Potter and the…” so it would’t technically be a Harry Potter book then…..

  • AFD

Reading these comments, I hope it’s fake. Jo’d feel f*cking awful if it was real and she read this. You’re all geniuses.

    • Anonymous

No she wouldn’t, she’d completely agree with everything on here. I’m sure she would think this is just as bad as we all do.

      • Mandi

        Yeah, there’s a reason it wasn’t the ending…

    • Ana

Actually, I think all this comments are a testament to the quality of Jo’s writing, storytelling and plot/character coherence. This “alternative ending” has nothing of the original material and we, the readers, can all see that!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000008061767 Justine E Woodard

I totally agree!!! I mean, we are all so use to such wonderful writing from her in HP, we can all tell when its not her. The quality just goes down so much!!! This just proves how good she is!! =]

  • Mushroom

For a moment there I was almost sure today was the first of april.

  • Anon

    That sounds really really fake….

  • Shana Debusschere

    Not something Jo would write!

  • Anonymous

terrible fan fiction.  the logic that JKR used throughout the series and interconnectedness is not in this “ending”  it wouldn’t wrap up anything

  • Sean

There is no way in hell that JK Rowling came up with an ending even close to this. And before DH was released she had said that she was going to end the series so that it wouldn’t be able to continue anymore. This ending does not coincide with that statement.

    • Lauren

She also said, years before the release of DH, that she already knew how the story ended. She’s always known.

    • Witchy Woman

It was just an alternate ending. She wasn’t continuing it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000008061767 Justine E Woodard

This was not JKR at all.

  • Lol

ugh. I just want potter more to come out

  • http://twitter.com/Thomassholan Thomas Sholan

There is no way in hell this rubbish is real. For one Jo has always said she had the epilogue written long before DH was even published so she knew exactly how it would end and 2 she also always said that Harry would never be a professor at Hogwarts; that an academic career would not be for him.

  • Venustas

    That’s riddikulus.

Definitely read your comment and thought of Quirell sounding like the Trololol guy. XD

  • Alice88

It has nothing to do with the writing, it obviously wasn’t told to him by Jo…She never would have written this for anyone, let alone TELL someone. Rubbish, a guy just trying to get attention in the hype of the last movie. Just skimming it I laugh out loud at how ridiculous it is!

  • http://twitter.com/zackfg Zachary Fortais Gomm

I doubt it is true but it could be but it seems like very badly written fan fiction because there was never any knowledge of some of these things being possible in previous books. I truly feel this is bad fan fiction. (especially the bird part and the aging in reverse part! and head master potter!)

  • Cori

Did anyone actually believe this crap? lmao

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000008061767 Justine E Woodard

Im reading all the comments now…. only one person out of like 240 think it was by Jo. lol

  • Lara

  • Gateskp

This can’t have been written by JK Rowling.  It just sounds too…I don’t know, not her style from what I’ve noticed in the HP books.  I was horrified reading this; it sounds like a bizarre fan fiction.  There’s no way everyone could forget about Voldemort, the most powerful Dark Wizard of all time.  (And Cho Chang as headmistress?  What is THAT about?)

  • Erysimum

Besides the fact that this is awful, I find it impossible to believe that any true friend of Rowling’s would reveal something so personal to her as an alternate ending to her series to any media outlet.

No way would J.K.R come up with this! This is so weird and totally not cannon. Has this guy read the books? Only Jo has the smarts and the writing talent to write Harry as it should be, as it IS. Not this weird junk!

  • Tess_e_pooh

Yeah, I agree with Heather Murray on this. This is a journalist with very little idea what decent fan fiction looks like trying to write it and failing. Ugh!

  • Willow

does anyone else think that this reads a lot like fanfiction?

  • http://twitter.com/PabloRV7 Pablo Ruiz V

This is the most ridiculous thing ever. Headmaster Chang.Voldemort’s parents?! If this was written by Jo, I’m a treacle tart

  • kylegene

Everyone is mentioning how terrible this is, yada yada yada. Much of it is unbelievable and very un-Jo-like. However now one is mentioning…Harry’s great great grandson’s name is Tom? I think that name would kind of be taboo in the Potter family for quite some time…

    • Victoria

Probably got the idea from Albus SEVERUS, but that was a completely different case.  And Voldemort would not be happy with his parents.  Even as a child, he hated them.  He hated his mom for dying and his father for abandoning him (and he even KILLED his father!!!), so there’s NO WAY that he would be happy to be with them again. (Plus, Tom and Merope would not want to be with each other…he LEFT HER.)

Stylistically not-JKR (at ALL), terrible plot (also not JKR), and makes no sense canon-wise.

If this HAD been JKR’s ending, I would have felt completely ripped off…it would almost have been better if some Muggle simply sat up in bed at the end and muttered “What a strange dream…” :P

      • Supermegafoxyawesome

For some reason, your comment made me die of laughter.

I completely agree with everything you said.

      • Alyss

My mom thinks Im weird cause I was laughing so hard! Not to say I don’t agree, I agree with every point that you made – especially the last one. :)

      • Maggie

” it would almost have been better if some Muggle simply sat up in bed at the end and muttered “What a strange dream…” :P ”

      • Lia

I agree completely. Although one of my pet silly theories was that the story would end with an eleven-year old boy with black hair waking up on the first of September saying, “Mum, I had such a funny dream last night…”

  • Helena

Forget Fanfiction, this is more like Haterfiction – it’s so bad it sounds like someone really hated the series and tried to write a terrible ending just to spite people!! Dementors kissing Voldemort’s wand to indirectly suck out his soul? Come on, a 6-year-old would write that!! I’d guess this is a bid for attention, or JK jokingly told him this ‘alternative ending’ and he actually believed it.

If JK really did write this, then I feel so bad!!

  • Alvispotter

She’d never have such a bad idea for an ending and even if she did this is NOT the way she writes, and you can tell that by a mile! Rubbish!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Celeste-Jeffcoat-Lueck/100000284892332 Celeste Jeffcoat Lueck

Sounds like fan fiction to me.  It doesn’t even sound like Rowling’s writing voice. I think the man is full of s..t.

  • SusieIsAMuggle

Ok, first of all, if this was an actual ending considered by jk rowling, the ENTIRE series would be different.

  • Emily McDonald

Bleh! God, how can anyone believe this is J.K. Rowlings alternate ending for Deathly Hallows?!

  • Fantasyfreak77

Why the heck would Ginny change herself into a bird?

    • Fantasyfreak77

      I mean, that’s just flat out… dumb.
I’m likin’ everyone’s comments, by the way. You’re definitely summing up my thoughts nicely.

There is no way this was JKR’s idea. She said in an interview that she had the epilogue written a long time before she ever wrote DH. She’s had the ending planned for such a long time. This is some journalist’s way of sparking controversy and getting 15 minutes of fame.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aaccss Alex Smith

Buahahahaha this must be the most TERRIBLE piece of fanfiction I’ve ever read. The Dementor’s Kiss spell actually seems a bit plausible and terrifying, but the rest is complete bull. Rowling has always said Harry would never become Headmaster. Nor would even a YOUNG voldemort embrace his parents like that. Did the dude even read the books?

  • Jeany3

    no, its too dumb

  • Bmalin92

no way Jo had anything to do with this story

  • Hagrid

Wait..this is not a joke? Umm..“Harry, dearest, you can’t miss your own birthday party. And it’s so lovely outside.” That is hilarious. First, Ginny not wanting to age. And then she says that. Not Ginny whatsoever.. Not even a LITTLE bit.

JKR said in as early as 1999 that she would make it so that the books will end with her, and no one else could obviously continue it. She also said in many interviews that she had an entire CHAPTER of an Epilouge–not a little blurb. She also said very, very early on Harry would never go into the academic field providing he lived to have a career. Also..Headmaster Chang? As in..Cho? BAHAHAHA! Hilarious stuff right there. Also, her detailed plotting which went throughout the series would be for nothing–there is nothing about the Hallows, Horcruxes or anything else or her persistant theme of love.

This man is a fraud, a fake, a liar. I hate him with all my heart. How DARE he say these are JKR’s words, how DARE he say it was her ideas, HOW DARE HE say that they are friends–if it is real (which it is not), then why would he reveal an atrocious alternate ending?!  Rubbish.

    Filthy Muggle.

    • Gateskp

I quite agree with you!  Cho Chang as headmistress?  Is that a joke?  Didn’t JKR say Cho married a muggle?  I mean, seriously, why would Cho Chang be a Hogwarts headmistress?

Also, I love what you said last. Sirius was one of my FAVOURITE characters in the series (and when I get mad at my friends I go around yelling what he said at them).

  • nodaybut2day

What a load of rubbish. I agree with everyone else it does sound like bad fanfiction! Even if you ignore all the crazy parts, i really doubt Harry would ever become headmaster! And if this is an alternate ending what happened to the horcruxes??? This is siriusly riddukulus.

This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FAKE!!!!! and i have only one very important way to prove it… Why would Voldemort use a spell of Dementor’s kisses on Harry we all know Voldemort believes Death is the worst thing to experience. WHY WUD HE TRY THE DEMENOT’S KISS…. Also Ginny turns into a bird!!!!??? Besides why wud Jo out of all other rite-minded ppl tell this FOOL!!!! about an alternate ending…. Please I KNOW Mrs. Rowling wouldn’t write something as horrible as this!!!!!

    WHAT!!?  :O
what kind of ending is that… preparing a charm, Ginny a bird, would soon darken again!? huh!? :-p
This is such a weird ending… Jo would have never written it. It doesn’t even mention anything about the deathly hallows, the two ghost simple appeared out of nowhere!? :O :-p what about the horcruxes!!? Its not even logical!
& BTW Jo always wanted to end the story with the word scar…
hahaha…. it made me laugh especially “Ginny the bird” :-p

just picking one of the completely absurd things in this alleged “alternate ending from my deeply personal friend JKR”- so Harry names his great, great grandson after the man who tried to kill him numerous times, killed his family and friends and terrorized the wizarding world. This great, great grandson then crushes a chocolate frog and Harry knows that “the whole world would soon darken again for generations to come.” so incredibly stupid. There’s no way JK freaking Rowling wrote this.

Despite the fact that this is terrible (like everyone else has said)…there’s no way in hell Jo would end the series with a “reincarnation” of Voldemort. It goes against the whole principle of the story. Not only that, but Ginny and Harry’s bloodline would never create a monster like Moldy Voldy. (And Jo would never, ever, ever name that character “Tom.”) Voldemort was borne of hatred and Slytherin filfth.

Also, I love how NO ONE has even tried to defend this as Jo’s writing. We can’t ALL be wrong.

    • Pietra Gunn

Born of hatred and filth, I get that part. But *Slytherin* filth? WHOA, whoa. No need to go there.

      • Karen

NOT implying that all Slytherins are filth…just saying the Slytherins he was related to were filth. :)

    • I<3Books

That is so true. DH leads up to Harry getting rid of that evil for good. And what the heck was with Ginny turning into a bird? She would still die but just as a bird. And wouldn’t she be able to accept death UNLIKE VOLDY? It’s a bit like she’s trying to create an illusion of a Horcrux, by which she would not die.

      • Karen

You’re so right! It is so uncharacteristically Ginny-like. And the way she speaks to him? She does NOT sound like that and never would, even in old age.

  • pasteldequeso25

“feathered wife”? its not april 1st yet, what are you playing at?

  • http://www.facebook.com/MarvelouslyMarbolous Mario Lujan

Jo has said for a long while that Harry would never have been Headmaster of Hogwarts bc his future doesnt lie in academia.

  • Anonymous

wow….this is utter rubbish! if jk rowling wrote this, then I’m babbity rabbity! lol

    • coolcatcheesecake

well it says that it’s the jouralist guys words of the events that you have happened. so it’s not in her words..

      • Anonymous

yeah, but the entire “plot/story line” is just ridiculous & does not even 1% reflect the writing style of jk rowling.

  • amf

look at this link- http://www.gregpalast.com/harry-potter-jo%E2%80%99s-other-ending/ its the Greg Palast guy’s blog post about how JK apparently gave him this ending. he sounds exactly like Rita Skeeter haha

    • Anonymous

That’s what I was thinking the whole time!  Where’s his quick quotes quill?  I bet Harry’s eyes were glittering with the ghosts of his past when he kneeled down too.

  • jess

i’m so glad this never made it into the book…even if it was written from memory and not word-for-word, it’s just strange…o.O riddle’s parents, dementor kisses from a wand, ginny as a bird, cho chang being headmistress after mcgonagall, the whole time was just confused…

  • 7Starrchasers

    i actually kinda like it!

    • Kirsten

      Oh, yes it is.

  • Jazz

I’m thinking this is purely a joke. Yeah, I’m 100% sure it is.

  • Turtlesruleforever2014

    i can’t even. that’s all.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002239733573 Natalia Mushegian

….not believing this, at all. obviously it’s not written in her style because he re-wrote it “from memory”, but it is BLATANTLY ignoring things that jo had put in the earlier books to set up the ending.

  • HPForever 3 :)

I highly doubt this was Jo’s writing or her idea! Wasn’t the entire point of the concept of the Deathly Hallows accepting that there will come a time when you have to die and that there are worse things in life than dying. Ginny would not Transfigure herself into a freaking bird just to live forever and didn’t Jo also saw fit that the perfect ending to the series was, “All was well.” I think she made it clear in the books that Tom Riddle Sr. did not care at all for his wife or unborn child as he was under a love potion, so why and how would he able to protect Voldemort, who is not the master of the Hallows. I don’t think they could be ghosts either cause T.R. Sr. was a muggle and his mother never even raised a wand to stay alive for her son, why would she come to his aid now after all the terrible things he’s done? The entire thing contradicts with the moral of the entire story! Agreed, bad fan fiction. End of story.

  • Siriusly_Tonks

i dont think this is really her….sorry

  • Gp_2013

    Ok no.

  • Gp_2013

    Ok no.

  • Theaterboy1

Wow, am I the only one who thinks that whether this is real or not it is certainly interesting?? I mean definitely the Forbidden Forrest part anyway. I like the idea of showing Tom Riddle Sr. and his wife’s love for their son even though they know what he’s become. Yes this story sounds a bit farfetched and yes I like the way it actually ended better but I do believe that this “alternate ending” has some interesting parts.

    • Victoria

But the point of Voldemort’s evil existence is that they did NOT love their son.  Tom Sr. did not love Merope or their son, and Merope didn’t care enough to even TRY to live for him.  That’s part of the point as to why Voldy became evil in the first place: he never experienced any love at all (the other probably has to do with his inbreeding mother’s side and his decent from Slytherin…)

      • Theaterboy1

thats true, and maybe in the above proposed “alternate ending” they were trying to make up for that. Whatever the case may be the actual ending in the book is perfectly fine and I like it a lot better anyway in my opinion. You make a great point about Voldemort though and about his decent from Slytherin.

  • Hpfanficfan

ok, you know when you have thus memory, and you’re not sure whether it was real or a dream….well….

  • Zach

Is this is real, then I’m a crumple horned snorcack.

  • Gahba24

:O  I SERIOUSLY doubt that’s JKR’s!!! She said she had the ending of the series planed long before she wrote it!! that spell sounds ridiculous to say the least…

  • nobody

okay, yeah i know it’s fake, yada yada yada, but i have one question…..

QUOTE:  Then suddenly, in inexplicable anger, little Tom crushed the candy animal. Harry watched this, and knew the whole world would soon darken again for generations to come. END OF QUOTE

What. the. hell? is this butt trumpet implying that harry’s grandson will become the next voldemort?? THAT’S ABSURD!!!!!!!!!!

    • Victoria

HAHAHAHA!!!!  Butt Trumpet!!!!  Are you saying this reporter is actually Severus Snape in disguise…?? ;)

Now imagine that ending: Snape not really dead, but under cover the ENTIRE TIME as an investigative reporter.  Series ends with “The is Severus Snape with the latest news, signing off.” ;)

    • Supermegafoxyawesome

      You’re absurd!
What?! Say that again to my face!
      You’re ABSURD!

    • I<3Books

Harry Potter the Chosen One… and his descendent becomes the next Voldy? That makes absolutely no sense. Isn’t the whole point of the beginning of DH to get rid of that evil for good?

  • accioharry15

that was the stupidest thing I ever read. 150 year old Harry who raises young voldemort with Ginny who turned herself into a bird?? …..theres no way J.K. Rowling wrote this.

  • Rome

  • Kat J.

REALLY terrible. Bad piece of fanfiction indeed. What the frack?

  • Blair

Wow.Ginny becomes a bird, and Harry names his great great grandson TOM??!! That just proves how dumb and fake this is.

Oh and Cho Chang becomes headmistress at some point? 0_o

  • Shelby

I don’t even have words for this.

  • Derp

Child plays with food, becomes Dark Lord.  Makes sense.

    • Sam

That part made me laugh out loud, for real! I was like, “Why is a kid playing with a chocolate frog?” haha

      • Witchy Woman

Yeah. Why didn’t he just eat it? That’s what I would’ve done.

  • Bob

‘alternate’ ending: Harry watched this, and knew the whole world would soon darken again for generations to come.
    REAL ending: All was well.

yeah, cause jk rowling would totally do a 180 on how she wanted the series to end…

  • Sam

OKAY… NO. lol I highly doubt that J.K. Rowling would have Ginny become a BIRD! Hahahahaha this is just too funny. Like… I don’t understand why the Dementors would give Voldemort’s wand the Kiss! His wand doesn’t have a soul! And that spell/curse that Voldemort says? What?! This is silly…

Sorry but I just feel like Jo would not just tell a reporter another version of the ending she might’ve done when this has never been news before in past years. Fanfiction-sounding for sure!

  • Whitney Davis

Of this is seriously legit, I just have to say that I’m really glad JKR changed her mind about this ending lol

  • Mandi

If this holds ANY truth at all, I think it went something like this:

Guy: I didn’t like the ending of your book.

JKR: Oh really? Well, would you rather the ending be completely idiotic? I mean, Voldemort’s parents could have saved Harry, Ginny could have turned herself into a bird, and Harry could have spawned the next Dark Lord. Does THAT sound like a better ending to you?

Guy: HECK YES!!! *off to tell everybody*

    JKR: Idiot…

    • Eric

      ^^ My hero.

    • http://twitter.com/MillieKaylee Amelia Kaylee-Bishop

I think this is exactly how it must have happened. Truly. This guy is off his rocker.

    • bookwizard

i agree, it seems like that is exactly what happened. :)

    • Alyss

      I think that’s what happened. :)

      • Jason

It sounds like something Jo would do, write multiple endings then show a friend who didn’t like her pick. But I think that he just betrayed her trust by telling it. Pff. Off the record.

    • Sean Krause

u r so right i bet that is exactly what happens except JKR prob said well go have a faied day with it… idiot!!

    • Moonshoes Potter

Mandi, you are amazing. this is probably what happened.

    • Kirsten

Yes. I guess some just don’t understand sarcasm…While I doubt JKR would write this, she might have just to let off some steam or as a joke that somebody took seriously.

    • Shaina

      Mandi, you are flippin AWESOME!!!

    • Jesicca

      My thoughts exactly.

  • Anonymous

Someone should search the HTML of this article on the guys website…

  • Victoria

Wow….this sounds like he took random concepts from the books and tried to “embellish” them, and made some crappy fanfiction-esque THING.  I wouldn’t believe for a SECOND that Jo wrote this.  Having read the series more than 7 times over and Book 7 itself 12 times, I’m very familiar with her style, and this is NOT IT.  There is nothing Jo Rowling about this.

“Oppugno Mortimbessios??”  Oppugno is the spell that Hermione used in HBP to send the birds she’d conjured flying at Ron.  He probably took the idea for the de-aging from what happened to the Death Eater who fell into the bell jar in the Dept. of Mysteries in OOP.  Tom Riddle never loved his wife or son, that’s why he left.  Merope was weak and didn’t care enough for her son.  Voldemort hated both of his parents probably above anyone else, and he certainly would not be happy to be with them.  NO WAY Cho Chang would be headmistress!!!  That’s so off the mark for her character!!!  Ginny would not turn herself into a bird, either, that’s absurd.

Also, it said something about Harry thinking of shield charms to protect himself from Voldemort, but wasn’t the point of going into the forest to die for everyone??  That makes no sense at all!!!

No horcruxes, not Hallows, no SENSE at all!!!!  I never for an instant believed this was Jo’s writing.  It’s utter rubbish!!!!

  • ThisIsTotallyFake

“Voldemort’s joy rose with every Dementor’s kiss to his wand.”

  • http://twitter.com/MillieKaylee Amelia Kaylee-Bishop

Nope. I’m very very happy with how it ended in the book thank you very much. I shall pretend this is some sort of crazy fanfic and move on. Sorry Jo, I love you to bits but no. This is just not the ending I as a fan would have wanted. Thank you for seeing that and choosing a different ending.

    • http://twitter.com/MillieKaylee Amelia Kaylee-Bishop

Let me clarify. IF and only IF I believed this is real. I personally think this… thing is a load of bologna.

  • http://twitter.com/vonchambers Devon Chambers

I don’t see her ever setting up a plot point so far in the future, readers grew up caring about a select group of characters and if she were to completely ignore those and bounce into the future to introduce new characters that have no relevance to what we loved … well, it just wouldn’t make sense.

and then there is the whole ability to throw dementor kisses out of a wand, and his parents protecting him? Voldemort never seemed to have great parents as far as we knew, and that seems like a pretty big point to omit from the books if it is indeed true, and to throw it there at the last minute? ha no.
conclusion? some sleazy journalist looking for page hits, so he wrote his wet dream.

  • Supermegafoxyawesome

There’s no doubt in my mind : this guy just wants attention and invented the whole thing up. I’m just disappointed that he didn’t at least TRY to invent something better.

I mean, Harry looks at his great, great grandson crush a piece of chocolate and somehow knows that the kid will become the next Dark Lord…?

totally fake. JKR has more sense and creativity. Way too many random concepts. Turning the Dementor’s kiss into a spell?

If we ignore for a moment, that this is absolute bullshit and a bad fanfiction, I really don’t think that Voldy wouldn’t have used the avada kedavra. He would, because he want’s to prove that he can kill Harry with it, although he failed before.

  • http://twitter.com/zachjonesmay Zach Jonesmay

Interesting alternate ending!  – Zach Jonesmay

  • Allanmarkham

In the interview with Opra Rowling said that the altenative ending was with scar in the last line, not this BS!

  • William Ninja

This seems incredibly stupid. That is all.

  • Turbo

I started reading this and I’m all “OK, so now there’s Dementors there…  Maybe this guy is just a bad writer… Let’s see where this goes”  I get a little further and think “Hmmm.. Dementor’s Kiss as a spell.  Not a HORRIBLE idea, not a great one either.”  Then it turns out Harry just head butts the spell back at him and I’m just dieing with laughter.  The rest was like watching Birdemic.  Everything is just SO wrong that it actually becomes enjoyable to read because it’s unlike anything I’ve ever read before.  And there’s a reason for that.

  • bob2010

This can’t even be real…even if we assume that Jk wrote such nonsense according to JK humans can’t talk while in animagus form…Lame -__-

  • gena

Horrible… no… this does not sound like Jo, the choice of words are so not her…

  • Allan Markham

Rowling sais in her interview with Oprah that the last line from the alternative egiloge had the word scar in it, and not this BS!

  • Steven R

it’s embraasing, hypable even posted this. I thought you lot where meant to be harry potter fans and understood the love and morals that the books promote, this awful piece of work shows none of that, and is clearly just a lazy attempt by an attention seeking guy to get some publicity, which annoyingly your giving him.

  • moglet

What a load of rubbish, I seriously doubt that this has anything to do with Jo, but an awful lot to do with a journalist trying to get his name in the news. I can’t imagine Jo creating an ending with such an awful story line, and I certainly cannot imagine her telling any possible alternative ending to a journalist, surely she is far too canny for that.

  • Reyna

    definitely not Jo Rowling style

  • http://www.facebook.com/katelyn.mckee Katelyn McKee

I like the idea of how Voldemort dies. But other than that the way she wrote it was SOOO much better. The idea that Harry’s Grand child would be evil… That is stupid.

  • Musikenza

…I’m glad J.K. Rowling didn’t go down this road.

  • Remus Moody

This…. Sucks. Until Jo endorses this as a real alternate ending, I refuse to believe that this could have been the end of an otherwise awesome series.

  • Guest

Awful, AWFUL piece of fan fiction.

  • Sdupes7 11

This definitely can’t be her writing, she would never have released an alternate ending to Deathly Hallows to a journalist. This was such a joke and so bizarre.

  • Andy

    shockingly bad

Definitely sounds like fan fiction. Too much randomness. Turn yourself into a bird rather than grow old indeed….

worse. No one remembers Voldy?!?! haha

  • Lynnae

Seems like this guy read the Cliff Notes version of HP, then randomly picked elements to incorporate into this nonsense.

Even ignoring how totally WRONG this is in the canon context: This man gets paid to write??? Seriously horrid writing. Worse than bad fanfic.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7JGX66HXGE7Z6IHL7KHT45W7ZM Nicole

This is crap and only a fool would believe this man.  Jo knew from the beginning how it would end and it HAD to end exactly as it did because of the literary tools she used to write the series i.e. Ring Composition, Christian symbolism, etc. (See the works of John Granger for an explanation of all these things in Harry Potter).

Is this man stupid enough to think that WE’RE stupid enough to believe him? Also, Jo wouldn’t reveal such a big secret to just a random person, off hand, because she knows how vital that information would be to fans.

Unknown people who say they’re “friendly” with a celebrity and are privy to information others aren’t are almost ALWAYS lying.  Exactly where did this guy supposedly come to know Jo I wonder……

  • http://twitter.com/upper_westsider NYC Girl

I don’t even care if this story is true or false. Is Palast using Rowling’s work to gain his own celebrity? It wouldn’t be the first time someone has done that.

  • Ana

The fact that this “article” has made so many people comment on it’s stupidity and absolutely no relation to J.K. Rowling’s original material attests to the quality of her storytelling… My dear Mr. Palast, putting together some crappy elements that remotely resemble the characters of the book does not make it even the least plausible… We, the readers, are used to an incredible plot, amazingly put together and well communicated, and that actually makes sense… LONG LIVE ROWLING!

utter rubbish … and hilarious too poor guy must have been hit with a confundus charm

  • HPfanatic

I liked the real ending better, but I don’t mind this one that much. People don’t get, she didn’t write this and give it to palast it sounds like she – probable mostly on the spot- verbally told this story to him and he – a while later- wrote it from memory. So of corse this wouldnt be her “choice of words”, she didn’t write it! This was probable an early POSABLE ending. I like how Harry is going down dumbly path and knowing about a new dark lord but not saying anything. Give it a chance. It’s a little far fetched, but it’s not awful.

    • Anonymous

So you were Confunded before you read the post, right?

Wait – Voldemort turned into a child, in which Harry had to care for? And Harry was Headmaster of Hogwarts? WEIRD!

  • Emma

The part that bugs me the most is about Harry having planned to use shield charms to defend himself. Unless the part about realizing he had to die after looking in the pensieve changed, too, then this can’t be right, because the whole reason he was going to the Forbidden Forest in the first place was to die.

  • http://nuhlikklebickle.blogspot.com/ Kami

From the guy’s website: “Jo was too distracted by a concern for how the ending would play on film.”
Because, you know, Jo said in multiple interviews she was never influenced in the flow of her story by fan opinions, family begging, and certainly not film adaptations.

  • Alyssa_Kar

I liked the dementor bit but i felt the epilogue was too un-rowling. The forbidden forest scene was brilliant i thought but i never saw Harry as headmaster or Ginny as a beard or him every allowing his great grandson to be named Tom. I think the ending Rowling picked was a much better suit.

    • Theaterboy1

That is exactly how I feel about it.

See, I like fanfiction. I write it and am pretty sure that I can write more realistic stuff than this guy’s joke of an alternate ending.
But hey wait! If I write my own alternate ending to DH and then claim JKR wrote it and told me (in strictest confidentiality of course), I could be famous!

  • Catherine Warren

For real. Such a trollllllllllololololol. That would throw away all of the Deathly Hallows which have been there since book one, this is more than an alternate ending. It’s an alternate story.

  • Maggie

this is absolutely bollocks… sounds like nothing jo would write. i was shaking my head through each new revelation. i hope jo comes out and clears this up and cant wait to hear about what andrew, micah and eric think about this in the next episode of mugglecast!

Faker than Barty Crouch Jr. as Mad-Eye Moody.

  • deb

This would be a wonderful AU-esque fanfiction. Honestly. There would be a whole heck of a lot of stuff explained (ie. Why would anyone related to Harry name their kid Tom?!).

The fact that he’s CLAIMING that J.K. Rowling told him this is bloody annoying.

  • Moonshoes Potter

I’m sooooo incredibly glad she didn’t do this. I like the way it ended and am REALLY glad it wasnt this, it just doesnt  fit.

  • Moonshoes Potter

Ignore my last comment. I just reread this and realized it’s impossible that JKR wrote this. It’s just soooo bad. And by the way, I read every comment and I must say, I love all of you guys that know that Jo is waaaaaaay better then this. :) you all give me faith in the future.

  • http://twitter.com/bookwizard Courtney

like this idiot needs views on his website… but if you havnt you should check out what he wrote in his entry before he posted the alternate ending. it makes me even more mad at him than i was after i read his ‘alternate ending’

    • http://twitter.com/bookwizard Courtney

im thinking that if Jo won’t even tell her own daughter what will happen,  that she would not tell a reporter, whether a friend or not, a supposed alternate ending to the entire series.

  • Harrypotterfan7

I think i would have accepted it if i had read it in the book, J.k Rowling could have made it work… But it doesnt quite fit with the rest of the book… I mean, Harry’s great great grandson was named Tom, which alluded to the fact that Voldemort’s reign of terror would repeat itself. Also..Ginny turning herself into a bird of paradise? That’s a little bit far-fetched, don’t you think? And I believe that, ever since Goblet of Fire, when the fake Mad-Eye Moody said he would make a good auror, that has been Harry’s dream job. I also don’t like that Harry didn’t go to Kings Cross in this alternate ending…I absolutely loved that scene in both the book and the movie. And why would Voldemort go to all that trouble just to create a new curse to rid of Harry?
All i can say is: I am VERY glad that this ending wasn’t used in the book (:

  • SusieIsAMuggle

According the the criticism section of Greg Palast’s wikipedia page,
“Left-wing former MP George Galloway also criticised Palast by claiming
    he ‘conflates meetings, truths and
half-truths, statements taken out of context to produce a toxic smear
which would be actionable in the country he claims to work in.”  I realize that it makes sense for a politician to be criticizing an investigative reporter, but I think the MP might have it right in this case.

This just sounds like a fun bit of fan fiction, I like the Ending the way it is

  • georgieee

honestly, JKR once said in an interview that Harry would never become a headmaster at hogwarts as a teaching career just wasnt there for him, so this is most likely false

  • Anonymous

Yay this ending is so much better!!! I’m so glad she finally came out with it all!!!!!!

  • Sanmarpotter

If J.K. actually thought about this, it must have been some time ago, and this journalist must have put a lot of invented things in his “memoirs”. I for one think he totally exaggerated this and it seems more than fan fiction but, in any case, thank god we got the end we got and not this … cheesy borefest! DH rocks!

  • TheTrio100

Um… okay this is not written by J.K. Rowling and i’m 112% sure of this

First, No magic can raise the dead so why is Voldemort Parents came back

Second, The Prophecy said “Neither can live while the other survive” so Voldemort or Harry should die but Voldemort got in a Statue

and Third, Harry is a Horcruxes so he’s need to be hit by the Killing Cures

Fourth, is so Ginny’s a Bird because Harry can live long so Ginny turned her self it to a Bird. Um.. Bird haven’t got long life’s so why did she turned into a Bird?

Make that 212% sure that J.K. Rowling did not write this

What the heck did i just read?!? Im sorry but this seems fake. No spell can bring back the dead. And whats with the Ginny-bird???

Hahahaha a good piece of trollory.

  • Kirsten

Has anybody else noticed that NOBODY knew who Voldemort was because of the backfiring spell? That’s exactly the opposite of what JKR was working towards in the books! And why would Harry ever keep a Voldemort statue at Hogwarts after being terrorized? The whole fanfi- I mean “ending” is a mess.

  • Eoin

It is well-writtern and has J.K. Rowling’s style but it completely destroys what was being worked toward through all the other books. And is the little baby Tom supposed to be the next Voldemort? And if Harry know he is? Why is he not stopping him? This is just ridicoulous. Harry and Cho Chang were the same age? So Harry couldn’t live while Cho Chang was dead unlesss she died of unnatural causes. This is what we get when people complain too much about Harry Potter.

So… Voldemort turns into a baby, and then Harry marries a bird?

    This seems legit.

Yes, Harry is definitely going to name his son after Voldemort, who tried to freaking kill him a bazillion times. This makes me want to punch the screen in rage. (But I shall refrain)

    • ProudtobeaBumblebee

      Replying to myself:
Edit: great, great grandson.Which brings me to another point. Why on earth is Harry so old? I think this man confused Harry and Dumbledore…

  • Matthewhpg

    “King’s Cross…Elder Wand…nah, I think I’d be better this way.”
Entire Potter Fandom does giant facepalm

    Listverse got me here. LoL

What a great fact indeed. They should make an alternate ending (in movie) of this. I wanna watch it. ^,^

That’s not JK’s tone and it contradicts most of the stories written already. LOL

The only thing disappointing about he ending to me was that no one of the main three (excluding Harry) died.

  • dafairygirl

I don’t know, even understanding it is from Palast’s memory of the recount, it really does not sound like something that J.K. Rowling would have done. The Dementor’s Kiss Curse seems far-fetched… and the bit with the Riddle family make no sense. Through the whole story, you know that Voldemort’s parents were never a ‘happy couple’ really. So them coming to Harry’s side and then ‘protecting Voldemort’ like they did in this clip… It makes absolutely no sense.

  • Just a bad fanfic

Half way through this, I felt like buying a new table. Not because I needed it, but because I would need it by the time I finished reading it since my forehead would smash through the table.

Harry as a headmaster makes perfect sense.

Harry’s grandson as the next dark wizard makes kinda sense if you like clichés.

Voldemort as a living statue makes little to no sense.

Ginny as a bird makes no fucking sense.

The date makes negative sense, in fact if the ending should take place in 2130, it ruins the chronology further of the book: I believe that in my copy of Chamber of Secrets it is indirectly stated to take place in 1995, while in my copy of the Deadly Hallows it is indirectly states to take place in 1987, which I can both live with because it was written over the course of ten years and revisions could occur, but 2130 implies wizards live inhumanely long.

I’m calling this a bad fan fiction, J. K. Rowling can’t be this stupid.
