Zooey Deschanel is taking her acting and singing to the Broadway stage to play Country Music Hall of Famer Loretta Lynn.

As Deschanel announced on Twitter Thursday, Lynn asked her to play the part in the musical adaptation of Coal Miner’s Daughter – the 1980 movie based on the country singer’s life.

In 1979, Lynn invited actress Sissy Spacek to the Grand Ole Opry stage to announce her part in the Coal Miner’s Daughter movie. She did the same with Deschanel, and the two shared the stage together to sing the hit song of the same name, Playbill reports.

“It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City. I never imagined I’d see Coal Miner’s Daughter on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see,” Lynn said. “I’m going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great – she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!”

Deschanel was just as thrilled to play one of her idols.

“Loretta Lynn and her music have been inspirations for me for as long as I can remember,” Deschanel said. “She is a true legend, and to be chosen to play such an iconic woman is a dream come true.”

There’s no word yet on when the production will debut as planning is still in the early stages, but the schedule won’t interfere with New Girl filming.
