The trailer for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is here and gives us our first look at Zac Efron as Ted Bundy.

Zac Efron is taking on a role unlike any he’s ever played before. Portraying the notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, Efron is taking audiences down an incredibly dark path, into the mind of a truly evil and sadistic man. The first trailer for the movie was released, and we got to see our first look at Efron as the infamous rapist and murderer.

For any familiar with Ted Bundy’s horrific crimes, this trailer seems…odd. The vibe from this trailer almost gives off romantic comedy vibes, seeming to portray Efron’s Bundy as a lovable scamp and anti-hero rather than showing him as a master manipulator and evil man.

To be fair, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is told from the perspective of Bundy’s longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins). Kloepfer was with Bundy for years and struggled against her own instincts and Bundy’s manipulation as she tried to work out if Bundy was truly the good man he claimed to be or the monster who viciously stalked, tortured, and murdered women.

While the trailer’s portrayal of Bundy likely meant is a reflection of Kloepfer’s initial feelings towards Bundy before she accepted who he truly was, it still is hard to accept as a viewer who knows the truth about Bundy. Intentional or not, the lighthearted editing gives off the vibe of trying to soften and even normalize Bundy’s crimes, which isn’t just uncomfortable to watch, it’s downright dangerous.

However, the director of Extremely Wicked, Joe Berlinger, is the director of the Netflix documentary Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, so we know the film was helmed by an individual who is very familiar with Bundy’s dangerous brand of evil. So we can hope that though the trailer suffered from some truly problematic editing, the film itself will portray Bundy a bit more accurately.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, and will open in theaters everywhere soon.
