Zac Efron has signed on to King of the Jungle, a movie about a real-life man who traded fortune for a life in a remote jungle in Belize.

Zac Efron took a turn for the darker roles when he played Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, but it looks like he’s not done with the more challenging roles. Reports say that he’s signed on to play a leading role in the new movie King of the Jungle.

As Deadline reports, the film is actually based on a real man, John McAfee, the tech giant behind McAfee anti-virus software. The movie bases its story off of an article in Wired that chronicles McAffee’s decision to cash out his Silicon Valley fortune, move to a remote part of a jungle in Belize, and live in a heavily armed compound where he lived a wild life filled with sex in hedonistic excess.

For his part, Zac Efron will be playing Ari Furman, the journalist heading to McAfee’s compound to write about the tech magnate for Wired. However, what begins as a simple profile will soon have Ari pulled into McAfee’s world of paranoia, a looser and looser grip on reality, and ultimately murder.

It’s not clear who will be playing McAfee. Deadline reports that the initial plans were to cast Seth Rogen and Michael Keaton for Furman and McAfee, but that fell through. A casting search is currently underway for the role of John McAfee.

While the cast outside of Zac Efron is still being nailed down, the team behind the camera is quite impressive. The script for King of the Jungle comes from American Crime Story writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, and Glenn Ficarra and John Requa of Crazy, Stupid, Love are set to direct.

There’s no official release date for this film, but principal photography is slated to start in early 2020. We can’t wait to see what madness Zac Efron and his future, unnamed co-star will get into when we finally get to see King of the Jungle for ourselves!
