CBS announced today that Young Sheldon has been renewed for a second season, ahead of their presentation at the TCAs.

The news of Young Sheldon’s early season 2 pickup should come as little surprise. The series, which is executive produced and narrated by Jim Parsons, is currently one of CBS’ most popular shows — and is number one in new comedy, with 16.17 million viewers. Only The Big Bang Theory, its parent show, is performing better for the network.

Young Sheldon has made a huge impact on our schedule in the short time it’s been on the air,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said of the show, in a statement. “While the show’s DNA is clearly rooted in The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon has staked out its own place in the TV universe with a unique creative tone, brilliant writing and a gifted multi-generational cast. We can’t wait to see Chuck, Steve, Jim and Todd [Spiewak]’s vision for how the Cooper family deals with Sheldon growing a year older… and smarter.”

The show follows the younger years of Sheldon Cooper, as played by Jim Parsons in The Big Bang Theory. Iain Armitage plays the younger version of the character, and the series follows his day-to-day life as he navigates high school as a nine-year-old.

CBS committed to a whole season of The Young Sheldon after just one episode had aired. Clearly CBS are encouraged, and confident, in the show’s continued appeal and retention of Big Bang’s audience.

Young Sheldon recently returned following a hiatus over the holiday. During that time its audience numbers enjoyed a significant surge, likely serving as a catalyst to accelerate its renewal.

With its continued success, we should expect to see Young Sheldon on our screens for as long as — or longer — than parent series The Big Bang Theory.

Young Sheldon airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on CBS.
