Sky Arts has released a trailer for its upcoming miniseries starring Dan Radcliffe and Jon Hamm titled A Young Doctor’s Notebook, and this new look at the story makes us more excited than ever for its December debut.

The minute-long Young Doctor’s Notebook trailer offers up several funny scenes led by Radcliffe and Hamm. The two play the same character at different points of Dr. Vladimir Bomgard’s life. The older Bomgard is a constant voice over the younger’s shoulder.

A Young Doctor’s Notebook debuts December 6 and is inspired by a collection of short stories by Russian writer and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov titled “A Country Doctor’s Notebook” set during the Russian Revolution.

“I loved the tone of it all, the mystery and sense of ‘other’ it engendered. The world was very foreign, yet very relatable, in a fish out of water sense. Bulgakov’s writing is very emotional and evocative,” Hamm said of the story last month. The actor had inspired the idea for this miniseries after visiting England to promote Mad Men. He was working with Sky Arts, who owns the rights to Bulgakov’s book, and kept turning the conversation back to the author.

Radcliffe came on board because he’s a big Bulgakov fan too. In the miniseries, Hamm plays the older version and taunts his younger self. He “voices all the neuroses of the young doctor, he becomes the voice in his head,” explained Radcliffe.

The actor promises plenty of gore, as is seen in the book. “That had to stay. It is pretty graphic in the book, and you can’t do justice to it without that. By episode four we were running out of blood.”

Part 1 of A Young Doctor’s Notebook premieres December 6. There’s no word yet on airings outside of Sky Arts in the United Kingdom.
