If you haven’t heard of You, you are seriously missing out.

Look no further, your favorite new series of this Fall TV season is here! The series just premiered, but Lifetime’s You is one of the most delicious shows I’ve seen in a while, and I think you’ll get just as hooked on it as I already am.

The show revolves around a “clever bookstore manager,” Joe, who uses technology and some pretty savvy character study to dissect the people in his life. He also uses his prowess to win over the girl who catches his attention, Beck. Be warned, he doesn’t stop at swiping and insta-stalking. You is a thrilling cautionary tale about what can happen when our lives are completely exposed and chronicled for the world to access.

You is being executive produced by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble. It stars Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley as Joe and Elizabeth Lail as Beck, and features Pretty Little Liars’ Shay Mitchell as Beck’s friend, Peach. Two episodes have already premiered on Lifetime, and the show will be available internationally on Netflix soon.

Here are a few reasons why You is the new show for…you!

Penn Badgley is the perfect creepy leading man

Penn Badgley has pretty much charmed our collective pants off in every role he’s been in. He’s always a treat to watch whether he’s making us swoon as “lonely boy” Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl, or stealing our hearts as the sweet-and-sexy leading man of Easy A and John Tucker Must Die.

Joe Goldberg is a different beast, although he’s no less intriguing. He manages to charm Beck and even acts as a sweet, paternal figure to his abused, young neighbor, Paco, but it’s a whole different experience for the audience, who can see the manipulation beyond the screen.

His creepy brand of manipulation is equally appalling and enthralling, and is only getting more twisted as the season continues. With the added bonus of flashbacks to Joe’s childhood, his character is bound to just keep getting more interesting with each episode of You.

It’s like a character study of everyone you met in college

Between Joe, Beck, her besties and her boys, You features a good cross section of the college population. Through Joe’s maniacal gaze, the audience gets to explore the psychology behind every move these people make, be it IRL or as part of their social media persona.

Not only is this a fun way to get inside the head of others, but it’s also a fascinating and terrifying window into our own social media interactions. What do we post, why do we post it, and what does that mean? Joe might just have some insight that we may or may not want to hear.

Beck is both broken and badass

Beck is a strong woman who happens to fall into many of the trappings of young adulthood. Abusive relationships, toxic friend groups, and social media addiction are ubiquitous in many people’s early 20s, and Beck is dealing with all of it in You.

While she’s definitely handed her share of struggles, Beck certainly isn’t a victim, no matter how badly Joe wants to “save” her. She’s also not a superhuman. She’s just a real, badass college girl who’s bringing #MeToo moments, female masturbation, and all the difficulties of 20-something life to the screen.

The literary references are like candy for book worms

Joe works at a book store, Beck is a writer, and Peach is a literal Salinger, so you know literature is going to be a big part of You. Whether they’re discussing Don Quixote or Frankenstein, it’s fun to look for clues in the references that the show chooses.

So far, it looks like You might be exploring at least one different classic in every episode, through the lens of Joe’s friendship with Paco. That means there are many more fun literary tidbits to come, as season 1 continues. The more we know, the sooner we could be able to solve some of the season’s bigger mysteries.
