Did your dashboard load okay this morning? Were the GIFs moving at their normal speed? Tumblr is now officially owned by Yahoo!

In May, Yahoo!’s board approved the purchase of the social networking site Tumblr for a whopping $1.1 billion.

From the very first official statement, Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer was clear that Tumblr would not change. “David Karp will remain CEO. The product roadmap, their team, their wit and irreverence will all remain the same as will their mission to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve,” she said.

“David and his team are redefining creative expression online, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next,” Meyers said in a statement today when announcing the official acquisition.

Mayer included this tacky GIF in her announcement post, which makes us thankful she’s keeping Karp in control:

So far the social networking service is safe and sound in the hands of Yahoo! The only change viewers made see are ways for the site to become better monetized.

In recent weeks, Tumblr began inserting sponsored posts into dashboards. The sponsored posts look just like every other post you see in your dashboard. While a little frustrating because you didn’t follow these brands that are appearing, Yahoo! needs to show investors that their $1.1 billion purchase was worth it.

In the coming months and years, you can expect Mayer to put pressure on Tumblr CEO David Karp to make the site more profitable. More sponsored posts or other ways to increase monetization are likely on the way.
