Did you miss our liveblog? Here is everything you need to know about Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox One reveal. You can also watch the full event again on Xbox.com.

Xbox One: The hardware

From the very beginning of the presentation, Microsoft were emphasising the “all-in-one” nature of their latest console. The name also points to this idea of a complete home entertainment system.

The console contains a Blu-ray player and USB 3.0. Like the PlayStation 4, it contains 8GB RAM.

The popular Xbox 360 controller has seen 40 small design changes, but overall looks very familiar.

The Kinect has also been upgraded with a wider field of view, plus an increase in precision and responsiveness. It too has seen a redesign.

Using the Xbox One

A significant amount of the hour long presentation was devoted to showing off the voice command capabilities of the Xbox One. By saying “Xbox, go home,” for example, the console switches back to the main menu. Further, the Kinect sensor allows users to use pan and grab hand movements to choose options in menus.

Snapmode is a feature that means multiple programs can be opened at the same time. An example used in the presentation was having Skype open in one corner of the screen (yes, Skype is included in Xbox One), and video calling a friend whilst a movie is being played on the rest of the screen.

There’s a trending section to identify which TV shows, movies and games are currently popular with your friends and the rest of the world, in addition to a personalised “favourites” section.

All the different forms of entertainment can be switched between quickly due to the Xbox One’s three operating systems.

Games on the Xbox One

Today was never going to be about the games, but there was some footage of FIFA 14, Forza Motorsport 5 and Call of Duty: Ghosts. The footage of the latter ended the presentation, and came with the predicted announcement that its DLC will be available earlier on Xbox.

Forza 5 was announced as a launch title for the Xbox One.

A new IP, Quantum Break, was also revealed. From the creators of Max Payne, the trailer is a blend of live-action and CGI.

Overall, the Xbox One will have 15 exclusive titles during its first year, eight of which are new franchises.

Perhaps the biggest, most surprising announcement was related to Halo. There was no new Halo game, but instead, a live-action TV series with Steven Spielberg on board.

Release details

Microsoft announced that its new console will release later this year. No pricing details were given during the event.
