X-Men director Bryan Singer said that he believes Mystique could carry a solo movie — with or without Jennifer Lawrence!

X-Men: Apocalypse is only a week old, but that hasn’t stopped fans and director Bryan Singer from speculating and theorizing where the franchise could go next.

Speaking to the The Empire Film Podcast, Singer said that he believes Mystique could carry a solo film. “I think [Mystique’s] right for [a standalone movie], whether it’s Jennifer [Lawrence] or not.”

Singer went on to say that Mystique’s unique view on the world is what could really be a driving force behind the narrative. “Xavier can get into Cerebro and look at the world but he’d rather just teach classes and see the beauty of mutants and humans co-existing in his mansion in Westchester. Along comes Raven with a reality check on the state of the world. It opens up a lot of avenues.”

Jennifer Lawrence’s contract for X-Men expired after Apocalypse. EW notes that while she would love to stay and do more X-Men films, it’s a very complicated situation. “I would love to come back. I love the fans and I love the character. But then you realize how important your year is, like how important three months out of your year is. I don’t know. I shouldn’t be that honest.”

Though X-Men fans would surely love to see a female lead X-Men movie, it probably wouldn’t be the same without Jennifer Lawrence returning to the character. However, after three movies it’s hard to imagine Jennifer Lawrence, arguably the most sought-after actor in Hollywood, doing another trilogy of X-Men movies.

As far as other solo films, X-Men fans should be excited. The third Wolverine movie is set to premiere next year, followed closely by the solo Gambit film starring Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau.
