X-Men: Days of Future Past’s opening sequence has been released and features mutants jumping through portals as they battle the Sentinels.

The film’s opening sequence premiered last night during MTV’s movie awards where Ellen Page was in attendance. Her character, Kitty, features heavily in the new footage as we see the mutants jumping through portals as they make their way around a facility being attacked by the mutant-killing Sentinels.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is shaping up nicely and the details that can be seen on some of the sets featured in the behind-the-scenes videos released recently are pretty incredible. We know now why X-Men: Days of Future Past is the second-most expensive film ever produced by 20th Century Fox, behind only Avatar.

The inbetweenquel (as Singer put it) cost a reported $225 million to shoot, not accounting for the film’s advertising budget. While this could be seen as a massive gamble, the film has possibly one of the most talented casts seen in quite some time.

The film’s final trailer will be released tomorrow and we look forward to seeing how the film turns out. We’ll be curious to find out if it’s able to obtain the box office numbers close to other ensemble films such as The Avengers.

X-Men: Days of Future Past’s release date is set for May 23, 2014. The film stars returning actors Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender. Also rejoining the X-Men franchise are Halle Berry, Shawn Ashmore, Ellen Page, and Hugh Jackman. Fan-favorite Peter Dinklage will be playing the film’s villain.
