X-Men: Days of Future Past may have come up a bit short of its $125 million estimate, but the film has been very well received and smashed the box office this Memorial Day weekend.

X-Men: Days of Future Past hit theaters Friday and opened to a three day total of $91.4 million domestic, but since it’s Memorial Day weekend Monday, is also counted, which brings the film to a $111 million domestic opening weekend.

It’s not the $125 million that the studio had the film tracking for, but with the international box office included, the film comes in at $302 million worldwide – impressive for any franchise on its 7th film’s release.

X-Men: Days of Future Past had a production budget just over $200 million, the second most expensive budget behind only Avatar for Fox, and with another $100 million or so for advertising, we imagine they’ll be hoping to see $675-750 million worldwide until it’s considered a box office success.

Possibly more important is the fact that X-Men: Days of Future Past has received incredible reviews from fans and critics alike. This was vital, as it was director Bryan Singer’s move back into the X-Men franchise, which he left after 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand.

Singer has admitted that he’s already begun working on the film’s next sequel, which is titled X-Men: Apocalypse. The film will focus on mutant origins, and if you stayed for X-Men: Days of Future Past’s after-credits scene, you got a taste of what one might expect from the next film.
