For fans who stayed for X-Men: Days of Future Past’s after-credits scene you were greeted to a very interesting post-credits sequence which may have you asking a few questions.
X-Men: Days of Future Past was an excellent film, but its after-credits scene could be quite confusing if you’re unfamiliar with X-Men lore.
In the after-credits scene we see a person with gray skin and blue lips maneuvering blocks of a pyramid in what is presumably Egypt.
The camera pans around this quite thin being who is hooded and then his face is revealed as people are in amazement around him chanting En Sabah Nur! The mutant Apocalypse’s true name which means “The First One.”
This is where X-Men: Apocalypse comes in to play. This scene reveals Apocalypse as a young man, just years after being the first mutant born more than 5,000 years ago. We know that he was born in Egypt in Akkaba and he wanted to be worshipped as a god, so playing around with the blocks to build the pyramid falls right into line with his storyline.

He was abandoned as a baby due to his unnatural appearance (we see his grey skin and blue lips in the after-credits scene). He was then rescued by Baal of the Sandstormers who saw his potential power and raised him as his own child.
This is where he received the name En Sabah Nur. Throughout his life, Baal taught Nur that the world lived and died by survival of the fittest, a philosophy that would shape Apocalypse’s entire being.
X-Men: Days of Future Past’s writer recently revealed “The post-credit sequence is a tease into what will be the Apocalypse movie. Now the Apocalypse you see – that young boy – may not be the actor who plays the character in our movie. It’s a deep back story glimpse into the character, but our movie doesn’t take place in ancient Egypt and will likely not star a young boy Apocalypse.”
So in all likeliness we won’t be seeing this young boy again, we’ll be seeing a fully fleshed out Apocalypse, which can be seen in the above image. As for his mutant powers, let’s get down to seeing just how powerful the oldest mutant in the world is.
Mutant Powers
Celestial technology also helped Apocalypse a great deal. He obtained alien technology that he was able to use to improve his abilities and create new ones as well. Many believe that without this technology he wouldn’t be nearly as powerful as he has become.
Fans may also have noticed that his Four Horsemen are sitting above his shoulder as the camera turns. Apocalypse would later recruit mutants to serve as his Four Horsemen. The group consists of four mutants that have been genetically altered and brainwashed to serve the ancient mutant either willingly or forcibly.
These mutants are enhanced or endowed with new and additional abilities, and are always given the same titles based upon the biblical Four Horsemen (Death, Famine, Pestilence and War (which replaces Conquest).
Singer recently considered what would happen if mutants did exist thousands of years ago, “What became of them? Did one survive?” X-Men: Apocalypse was announced by Singer himself a few weeks back. The director seemed very excited about potentially directing the film and he’s “negotiating to direct. We’re in the process. We’re trying to figure it out.”
Screenwriter Simon Kinberg says that he and Singer like the stakes of mutant origins, saying, “It feels like a story that could impact a lot of our favorite characters in big, dramatic ways. We feel it’s a very different story from Days of Future Past. For starters, [Apocalypse] is a very different villain, and the characters will be in very different places emotionally.”
Apocalypse will be a major part of the X-Men universe in the coming years and we’re very excited to see what Singer (if he directs) does with the first mutant ever born. We’re curious who will be involved in the film and what time period it will be taking place in.
