Olivia Munn will star as Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse, and she reveals new details about the film and her character, who may get her own spinoff.

When Munn was asked in an interview with Collider about her costume, and whether she felt comfortable in it, she said, “I think my first thought [when I saw the costume] was it has to be purple, because we were going up against time and making it. It was black at first because that’s the way to— the latex is in black and all the armor is in black and it’s just easier, but I was like, ‘You’ve got to make it purple.’ That was kind of my first thought when I saw myself in the costume, which was in Photoshop.”

Most fans know that Olivia Munn is a massive fan of comics herself, and she showed that when the writers and director were fleshing out her character. The actress talked about her character’s storyline, saying, “I was like, you know, there is that storyline, and I was really big about staying so true to Psylocke. In fact, I was like, ‘Um, she’s actually Psylocke because of the alien that took her body. She took on the name Psylocke because that was the alien’s name. And she becomes Psylocke after the Apocalypse,’ but they’re like, ‘Stop talking’ (laughs). I mean, I literally wrote a paragraph and at the end of it was like, ‘Do you guys want to fire me now. Am I too nerdy?’”

As for whether she was concerned about the skimpy outfit that she’s wearing in X-Men: Apocalypse, she says she doesn’t mind since that doesn’t mean she isn’t a total badass. Munn says, “I’ve loved Psylocke… To me, I know that Psylocke is dressed very sexually. Out of all the costumes, it’s really revealing, but it’s important to know that she always had substantive plotlines… Just because she’s dressed like that, she’s not this promiscuous, slutty girl that’s— in fact, Apocalypse is the one who dressed her and gave her that outfit.”

It’s nice to see her back up the way her character looks with the storyline that Apocalypse actually gave the outfit to her in the story, and that’s why she’s wearing the outfit from the comics. It’s something that some people might have a problem with, but Munn seems more concerned with keeping true to the comic’s story.

Munn says that while she likes the character, Psylocke has often been used as a tool for her powers, saying, “The way that I see Psylocke is as a very powerful weapon that has been used and abused by different people so that they could use her powers, and she’s somebody who’s just looking for righteous purpose. Right now, that’s why she’s one of the bad guys… She’s definitely someone who’s very strong, who’s been through a lot. She has really powerful abilities and is just looking for a purpose.”

In terms of fighting, and what weapons her character will have available, she says that she will be a telepath, but it’ll only be known to the viewers, and other characters shouldn’t know that she’s reading their minds.

James McAvoy, who plays Professor X, was key in another aspect of Psylocke’s fighting, in that he suggested her character use her psychic dagger as well as her real sword, saying, “Well, you can really throw them off if you’re going from your real sword to your psychic sword and then just switching hands.”

Munn also revealed that there could be a spinoff for her character, and if it happened she says, “I think if Psylocke had a chance to tell her story, it would be great to start with the genesis and have an understanding… I think maybe like right as she’s getting out of university and before her whole family— we jump in right before all of her family is taken out and we have an understanding of what she had to lose. Then her figuring out her powers and how powerful she is.”

It’ll definitely be interesting to see if Fox takes some of these characters and starts making solo or spinoff films, since they’ll be losing Hugh Jackman’s solo Wolverine films soon. If Olivia Munn’s Psylocke is well-liked, it’ll be interesting to see where the studio takes the character.

X-Men: Apocalypse will be released in theaters on May 27, 2016.
