X-Men: Days of Future Past won’t hit theaters until May but director Bryan Singer is already discussing X-Men: Apocalypse and what the story may focus on.

There were reports that director Bryan Singer had already signed on to direct X-Men: Apocalypse, but now it seems he’s still negotiating his deal with Fox. In a recent quote Singer said, “I’m co-writing the story and I’m producing it.”

Concerning directing duties Singer tells EW, “I’m negotiating to direct. We’re in the process. We’re trying to figure it out, schedules. My desire would be to direct.”

What’s interesting is now we’re hearing reports that the negotiations are about whether Singer will receive a percentage of the ticket sales or not.

This is something that is normally reserved for Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Michael Bay, and more recently Joss Whedon. But if Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past does well this May, it’s possible he may be able to negotiate a deal which could net him a percentage of the ticket sales.

This would be a tough sell though, as it’s been years since Singer has directed a blockbuster. We may be waiting until the release of his latest X-Men film to find out whether he’ll be directing X-Men: Apocalypse, which could affect filming schedules as he mentioned.

Singer did comment on X-Men: Apocalypse’s possible storyline stating, “Something that happens in this movie [Days of Future Past] causes what’s going to happen in that movie.” He went on to explain that mutant origins will be explained as well.

The director says, “[Apocalypse] will also address historical mutant-cy, meaning the deep past, mutant origins and things like that. It’s something that’s always intrigued me when we think about our Gods and our history and miracles and powers.”

This is definitely interesting, as seeing how mutants came to be would be vitally important to all the X-Men films’ storylines. We’ll just have to wait to find out if Singer will direct X-Men: Apocalypse and keep an eye out for the origins of mutants in the X-Men universe in 2016.

X-Men: Days of Future Past’s release date is set for May 23, 2014. The film stars returning actors Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender. Also rejoining the X-Men franchise are Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore, James Marsden, Ellen Page, and Hugh Jackman. Fan-favorite Peter Dinklage will be playing the film’s villain.
