After continuing to slide in the ratings despite major judges panel shake ups, The X Factor star and executive producer Simon Cowell says the show may go to one night a week.

The long-time television judge spoke to members of the media including our friends at Zap2it this week and was asked about where the show could make adjustments for season 4. “We have an idea in our heads. We learned a lot about what we did wrong and what we did right. Things I think would make the show more exciting. But most importantly is we have to trust our A&R abilities, that this show can find better artists that anyone else. That’s the future of the show.”

Cowell then confirmed they may make the switch to only airing one episode a week, meaning the performances and eliminations would happen in a single episode. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars switched to this format for the 2013 season and saw good results. “That’s how we started in the U.K.,” says Cowell, “we started off making one-hour shows and 90-minute shows, and now you have two-hour shows and two-and-a-half hour shows and they’re like marathons. You know, I like two-hour shows. Everything’s contained.”

The X Factor airs tonight on Fox where the final four contestants – Carlito Olivero, Jeff Gutt, Alex & Sierra and Restless Road – compete for a spot in the semi-finals. Thursday’s results show will include live performances from Jennifer Nettles and Enrique Iglesias.
