Disney’s newest film out of their animation studio hits DVD/Blu-ray March 5, and Hypable spoke to director Rich Moore about the home entertainment release while reviewing its special features.

As we wrote in our initial film review last year, Wreck-It Ralph is “a cute story that will be sure to please kids and videogame fans alike, but the ingenuity of the concept should please any fan of storytelling as well.” Now, a second and third at home watch makes us stand by our initial thoughts, and the beautiful detail in the Blu-ray version makes this anything but the 8-bit graphics quality the Fix-It Felix, Jr. storyline is set in.

The cleverness of the film extends to even the DVD/Blu-rays menus, which are placed in an arcade-style theme complete with those addicting old-school sound effects. Special features on both the DVD and Blu-ray include the featurette “Bit by Bit: Creating the Worlds of Wreck-It Ralph.” As the title suggests, you get a look into the various video games that were created from scratch for Ralph and his newfound friends such as Sugar Rush, Hero’s Duty, and Fix-It Felix Jr.

Deleted and alternate scenes are also available, with Moore offering optional commentary. The deleted scenes are in story board form because Disney and Pixar never fully animate scenes unless they’re going to make the final cut. “We try lots of different things in the form of animatics, in story reels,” Moore told us. “This is how we find the final story. We try lots of different things,” including one aspect that did make the deleted scenes section: a video game world called Extreme Easy Living 2. “It was like The Sims meets Grand Theft Auto, this kind of social gaming world” explained Moore.

Other special features include “original” commercials for the aforementioned games like Sugar Rush. You’ll also find the Oscar-winning animated short Paperman by first time director John Kahrs.

There is one Blu-ray exclusive: “Disney Intermission: The Gamer’s Guide to Wreck-It Ralph.” There, when the film is paused during a scene, the Nerdist himself Chris Hardwick talks to you in ten video segments which explain some of the video game references made in the film. One of the best aspects of Wreck-It Ralph are those references, so it was great to see Disney give them extra emphasis in this home release.

All-in-all, fans of the video game or Disney genres will want to add Wreck-It Ralph to their home collection. The film boasts a classic storyline that can be enjoyed on repeat watches, and the special features open up Ralph’s world further. The inclusion of the now Oscar-winning Paperman is an extra treat.

Available March 5, the 4-disc Blu-ray combo pack includes the Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Copy discs. The 2-disc Blu-ray combo pack includes just the Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film and special features. The film is available now for digital purchase in standard and HD formats in iTunes, Amazon, etc.
